Still Smokin (1983)
Worse than you can imagine
I am a Cheech and Chong Fan. Saw "Up in Smoke" a few months ago and I still think it is great. .....Still Smokin is not great. Not good. Not fair.....it is crap. A few funny moments, but basically no story. Most of the humour is not funny, even if you are stoned. Try "Up in Smoke" or the Next Movie, but not this one.
The basic plot/story is Cheech and Chong are mistaken for Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton at a film festival in Amterdam by people carrying signs with Burt and Dollys photos on them. ...and then it get worst.
You can look at my voting history and I have rated over 1500 movies...there are very few ones...98% of my votes are 6 and up...I like movies of all kinds..except crap. THis is crap...Don't waste your time.
Broken Flowers (2005)
It Just Doesn't Work
I love Bill Murray...Loved Lost in Translation....This just doesn't work. The writer/director tries to get us to believe that this lifeless, drab, boring man, with an inability to speak, is a "Don Juan" that gets women at will???? Yeah right.......... Add to that the endless drawn out shots of nothing doing nothing..... I don't mind the ending, like the idea but the execution is crap. The dialog is lacking....... What a waste of Bill Murray and my time. Showing Bill sitting a couple of time doing nothing.....might set a mood, but doing it again and again....ahhhhhhhhhhh AND I traveled across the country, I am looking for my son and when I see a woman that I haven't seen in 20 years, I say hi and just stand there....and say nothing....................on and on.......
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
The Problem with Spoofs ------- Do you love or hate the movie?
Another movie some people hate or love with good reason. If you aren't a sci-fi fan, you will likely hate Sci-Fi spoofs as you will not get much of the humour and aren't interested in the setting of the story!!....Galaxy Quest is similar...If you hate Star Trek and never watched it, why would you laugh at a Star Trek spoof? I like this movie, because John Lithgow is one of the funniest people alive(my opinion and taste), I get the jokes because I read the comics, watched the Sci Fi movies, like satire, lived the 80s, and like silly humour. 8 out of 10 if you like silly, sci-fi and in-jokes. 2 out of 10 if you dislike silliness, satire, slapstick and sci-fi..

Timeline (2003)
It could have been OK...It was not!
I am a Sci-Fi Time travel lover and I thought it was mostly a really bad movie. The story was not laid out well. THe book did a much better job(although the book also had serious holes). After reading the book you realize they had to cut some content to fit two hours. The wrong things were cut, important issues not explained, story bits changed for the worse.....I guess you have to blame the screenwriter and director. The characters were not developed enough... You didn't care enough because they were cardboard cutouts. Paul Walkers acting made me think of old Disney Movies from the 70s. Frances O'conner was better, but still not believable(I like her voice). The others were better yet, but it still was a sterile, empty world and never drew me in.....
They didn't even seen to spend much money on the sets. 14th century village that were clean???? Mostly clean clothes? Give me a break. And why have the cop in New Mexico at the beginning like in the book and then leave it????
Don't waste your time.
Time After Time (1979)
One of my favorite time travel movies
Good acting. Believable.....not the science but the characters. More a fantasy movie than a SciFi. Malcolm McDowell(not one of my favorites) does a great job as HG Wells. You believe his reactions and his character. It is this wonderful little movie that pulls you in.
The director played with the pace and timing, humor and suspense to keep you involved. David Warner does a nice Ripper. Like all Ripper characters, unexplained, but crazy....but smart, controled crazy.
Time Travel Movies The Good - Groundhog Day, Time after time, Back to the Futures, Terminator 1, Millennium(no-one else liked it)
The OK - The Butterfly Effect, The Time machine(1960 although it is dated and has flaws) Bill&Ted's Excellent Adventure(amuzed me), T2, Planet of the Apes, Black Knight, Kate and Leapold, Peggy Sue Got Married (1986),Three Stooges Meet Hercules, The (1962)
The Bad - Timeline, Philadelphia Experiment, Time Bandits, Somewhere in Time, Superman(whichever one it was...it was bad), The final countdown(1980)
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Great film but really depressing.
Requiem for a Dream (2000) 3/10 as entertainment and 9/10 as a film Amazing acting that completely drags you into a depressing hopeless world of 4 addicts....The director and actors do an amazing job recreating this story. The question is? Do you want to spend 2 hours watching people destroy their lives and make you feel you are in it. ..... A very powerful movie....Still not sure if I am glad I saw it??? If you want entertaining drug freaks, try Trainspoting, which I loved. Same ugly topic, but entertaining. Very graphic. Depends on what you want. This film made us fell depressed and sick....Not what we want from a movie.
Eating Raoul (1982)
Great comedy but dark and to some "sick" humour
Paul Bartel is wonderful as both the male lead and director. The story is unusual and takes "justifiable" murder for personal gain as the topic. This is mixed with the good old American "anything to get a head" mentality to put you in a story where what is usually unacceptable is sort of funny. Maybe the best really dark comedy ever. OK I like it! This was a low budget movie that never seemed low budget to me. It is a 70s movie and the attidudes show it.
PS I never did like Bartels other movies, Rock N Roll High School and Death Race 2000. As a teenager, I thought they were mindless trash. Still entertaining, but trash. Although, the last time I saw them was in the theaters? LLLLong ago.
If you like twisted comedy that pushes the limits....This is a good one. 8.5/10
The First Nudie Musical (1976)
Funny Bad
I saw this when I was 15, in the theater... I think we paid for something else and then snuck into this theatre. There were 5 people in the theatre and 3 left half way through.....Do you get what I'm saying. It was the first time I ever saw a fully naked women, I was male and 15.....and it was still only marganially entertaining.
Some of the songs were good... This is a product of the 70s when movies like this and Fairy Tales, Flesh Gorden and such were taking almost adult movies(no plot lots of skin) to the mainstream theaters.
While I am a major movie freak, I am not much on musicals, so if you like musicals and skin......Maybe.
4/10
