Tales from the Hood 3 (2020)
Starting to love it
I rented this earlier in the week not expecting much with nothing to lose. Pleasantly surprised. This film is more funny than it is scary, my favorite story being the 3rd, but the main actor in the 4th story was my favorite player in the entire film (yes I liked him better than even Tony Todd).
BTW, I am hardcore fan of the original film since '96. I can recite that entire movie, and I watch it atleast 3 times a year. I didnt dig the 2nd film much at all, but this 3rd I liked so much that I found myself thinking about it st work the next morning, then I went back to redbox a couple nights later and bought it, then watched it again. Just sayin' so you know this isnt a BS account created to boost ratings. You can check all my reviews, ratings, and history on this website since the early 2000's.
Praises to Cundieff and Scott and the entire cast / crew involved. It has definitely brightened my mood in these COVID times.
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009)
Family Friendly Lieutenant
Nick Cage saves this from being garbage, but still this film does not compare to the old when concerning the character of the "Bad Lieutenant".
The movie also drags on too long and could of been cut shorter. Val Kilmer is also in this and is fun to watch as well, along with Brad Dourif.
This serves as a good appetizer before watching the original by the master A. Ferrara.
The Exorcist III: Legion (1990)
Total BS
This is inferior, let me repeat, completely INFERIOR make to the thatrical. You almost feel bad for George C. Scott (RIP), his "restored" scenes with lousy lighting making him look more like a sad bloodhound who is the lost cousin of the true George C. Scott in the superior original version (The Exorcist III), but you somehow got duped into paying 30$ into watching the lost bloodhound inferior version of this film rather than just re-watching the original..... so you are an idiot for feeling bad for the sad, inferior bloodhound.
Brad Dourif's "restored" scenes are purely laughable. "Father Karras" is not in this version, and whenever the cut scenes come into play, it really throws off the flow this movie is known for, also making it less creepy. They do not mix well into the movie at all.
In conclusion, this "director's cut" is a pathetic, waste of money. You can see why this was not the original release if you bother watching it, so if you are bored enough to waste sometime or for completist' sake, download it or borrow it, do not make the same mistake I did by buying it, and the original is one of my all time favorite films and book.
Examples of of movies that had GOOD directors cuts: Natural Born Killers, Lord of Illusions, Eyes Wide Shut.
Leatherface (2017)
Surprisingly Good! Not your standard prequel film.
There's probably over a dozen TTCM or movies-related-thereof to date, I didn't bother keeping up after seeing the reboot TTCM, though one time or another I was unfortunate enough to see one or two of the sequels to the reboot of the TTCM.
A friend let me borrow this, and because it had to do with Leatherface, I decided I would perhaps maybe waste my time giving it a chance. Whoever wrote this movie did a great job not going the typical, one-dimensional route prequel-sequel films can tend to do. I honestly thought this was going to be a lame cash grab with pointless, over-saturated violence, but it is not.
The film is extremely violent, but instead of pointless distractions, it adds to the development of the story and serves to show the qualities the characters you are dealing with in a short amount of time. I recommend everyone who gives this movie a try to watch it all the way through, and it might need a repeated watch because a lot happens and it is very chaotic.
Greatest thing about this film, there really are no good guys. There are innocent characters, sure, but just about everyone is out for each other, and psychopathic hostility is present in almost every scene of the film.
This is a good installment in series of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, in my opinion it is not gratuitous (especially compared to the films of today), but it is definitely a gruesome film, but if you are making a film about the origins of one of Hollywood's most popular serial killers, how could it not be? Be sure to watch the Alternate Ending, this movie takes no prisoners and kills everyone, without boring you to tears.
Dracula (1979)
Disco Dracula
Dracula is probably one of my favorite horror stories of all time, so I am somewhat of a completist. I own many versions of the film, so of course when I saw this on a DVD rack, I got it.
You can definitely tell where F.F. Coppola got a lot of his inspiration for his version of Dracula from this film. It seems in his version, he is giving a "Shout out" or "reference' to this film in certain scenes with the setting, scenery, mood, etc. In this version there are of course character composites rather than all of the cast of the classic tale, but that is hardly this film's downfall.
I could not get over Frank Langella's laughable Dracula, who looks more like he belongs on the dance floor with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, rather than in the position of a 500 year old Vampire. Some of the classic dialogue is slightly changed, which gives it a poor effect, but it had me laughing. Langella has some redeeming moments here, but the part where he is shown a cross or garlic had me nearly in tears to laughter. I kept the film for these qualities, rather than dropping it off at the DVD pound aka pawn shop or second hand movie store.
The children of the night... what groovy music they make!
The Stepfather (2009)
Far better than I thought it would be
I am a big fan of the original film "The Stepfather", but since I was just done with a first time viewing Nip-Tuck binge, I decided to give this a try. I love the original for it's off the wall, ridiculous approach, but this one is a bit darker and less funny.
This film does not try to be the original, but there are similarities. It's modern day (made in 2009), but still manages to capture the spirit of the original in all the important ways. So while this movie is a retaining a fresh "Today" spin, it does have the downfalls (annoying modern day music as opposed to creepy 80's synth music).
Dylan Walsh makes a good psycho, and I never would of bothered for this had I not seen Nip-Tuck as I said earlier, a show in which he clearly shows in certain episodes that he has the acting skills to pull off an unstable, crazy personality. In this film, he is truly a Stepfather from hell, so give it a try before brushing it off in favor of Terry O'Quinn, who did a great job as well. Where as O'Quinn was off the wall and spastic, Walsh's character I feel is more realistic for this type of serial killer, one who preys on families and appears to be normal until it's too late. ( Again I love the original Stepfather dearly, but who could fall for O'Quinn? Walsh has a more convincing 'mask of sanity')
See the unrated blu-ray version to get the true vision of the film, which was cut in theatre$ for better rating$ and box office spoil$.
The Counselor (2013)
Great film, was much surprised
I have the unrated blu-ray, and it was laying around for a few months before I finally got bored enough to watch it. As I put it on, I was working at home and using it as background noise, and kept being distracted from my work by the dialogue of the movie, and eventually stopped working just to watch it. I ended up watching it twice in a row!
This is a dialogue driven film, as someone else said here, dialogue driven much like a Tarantino film. If you're just looking for action, blood & guts only, do not watch this. If you want to watch a screwed up movie, get the unrated blu-ray. I consider this film an mini-epic, it's not super long but it has the traits and qualities of epic crime films.
Best of all, this film covers the Mexico-USA/World drug trafficking trade, which I feel is swept under the rug in the USA in favor of the crisis in the middle east, so for anyone unaware of the bloodbath happening in America and it's neighbor Mexico, you should see this and consider it an educational film. 10 stars
Suspended Animation (2001)
Mediocre take at true crime-esque drama
Interesting movie, but I don't feel it was casted well. The movie seems influenced by Misery, but the cannibal sisters are nowhere near as convincing as Kathy Bates. There is another actor in this movie who plays the grandson of one of the cannibal sisters, and is a budding serial killer. The actor is almost laughable at his attempt to portray a young psycho, I believe he was from the Disney channel originally.
Overall, besides these faults, the movie is disturbing at times & is worth a watch. Maybe I'm just desensitized, this probably could horrify some folks out there. I'm interested to read the novel that the movie is based off of, it at least piqued my interest that much.
Into the Arms of Strangers (2007)
Wannabe Eyes Wide Shut
I'm sure whoever made this film paid a bunch of their friends to give this film good reviews, which fooled me into buying it. Thankfully it was only 99 cents.
The whole film drags on and is incredibly boring, with the big climax being aninferior rip off of the mansion masked party scene in Eyes Wide Shut (Kubrick). I think whoever had the $$ to make this film, saw Eyes Wide Shut shortly beforehand, and then chose to make his/her own god-awful boring version.
Don't waste your time or money with this piece of garbage .
4:44 Last Day on Earth (2011)
Way Better Than Expected
The only reason I bothered watching this is because Abel Ferrara directed it. It was really late and i figured this would be a decent movie to fall asleep to, but ended up watching the entire thing. I read reviews on here prior to my personal viewing, and think some of the negative reviewers completely missed the point of the movie. If you are looking for action it's not here, this is human behavior and psychology at it'z zenith, and last day. I couldn't help relating to some of the characters in the film, and I think some people out there will be able to as well. Ever wondered what the last day on earth would be like? This movie takes place in NYC, so imagine post-911 city dwellers last moments, you might find yourself not far off in your mental gleaming once you view the film. Maybe because it was late at night and I was somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness, but the film was disturbing and some moments rather creepy. Highly recommended, especially with the state of the world and America today.
Poltergeist (2015)
Slap in the Face
What was the point of this movie? Simple : a slap in the face from the morons at Hollywood and beyond. The only reason I bothered with this remake is because I was under the false impression that it was another story in the saga, or rather, an updated version of the story with different plot, etc etc... Instead, a bland, rushed, completely POINTLESS piece of work, and an absolute waste of money. I won't bother with spoilers, if you can read between the lines and have been seeing the garbage released for the last 10 years (atleast), then you understand. A sign of the times indeed, and also a sign that Hollywood is bankrupt on ideas, as people have been wising up to the pirates in the industry stealing original story lines and selling them as their own. It that true Sam Raimi had something to do with? If so, shame shame.
Crimson Peak (2015)
More MTV drama instead of substance
This was a huge disappointment for me. I like Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, never watched the Hellboy movies, but am familiar enough with the work of Dell Toro to appreciate. This film however, really infuriated me for the waste of time it was.
The only good things about this film, is the cinematography and set work (colors, etc). The plot is terrible, MTV-Kardashian-Degrassi type drama, and the film tries hard to be like Coppola's Dracula, Burton's Sleepy Hollow, etc etc...
This film is supposed to take place over 200 years ago, yet everyone looks like they have had fresh plastic surgery or are magazine models, not very convincing considering people did not look that way in the USA (or anywhere) over 200 years ago.
I wonder if Del Toro didn't understand that the plot was not old and overused, but incredibly shallow and yet another movie aimed at Americans who like useless drama. This is not a film for the thinking brain, it's eye candy with lousy acting and good use of color scheming, that's all.
If I were to write more on this movie on why it's so bad, I'd have to write spoilers. The CGI isn't terrible, but isn't good either. That being said, this movie was a waste of time, and the money spent on making it, which could of funded 1000 better films.
The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
36 million dollar piece of trash
First off, I wasn't aware that there were TWO X-files films, I found this DVD in a clearance section at half price books, i didn't look at it very closely obviously to see it was the 2008 film, but had I known anyways, I still would of bought it, so here goes the review;
AWFUL. There's no spoilers of scenes or plot in this review, but i felt I would say that it contains spoilers anyways since there are some features of the film that need to be explained.
To start, I read the budget and couldn't believe my eyes. This is a joke, not X-files. It's directed at the shallow, stupid American audience that Hollywood has relied on for so long, so if you have a brain, you won't like it. The film was obviously directed at the families of America, and it's themes, plot and dialogue are predictable and often seen on teenage TV shows at best, this movie was made for a theatre release and $$, not to please any X-Files fans.
Let me give you the idea of the film; it's more about the relationship of Scully and Mulder, than X-Files. It mostly consists of Mulder begging his mom Scully to let him go out and play (investigate a series of murders), whereas in all of this bloodshed and horror, Scully is more concerned about the rotting state of their marriage. No back story on the killers, no big tasty treat at the end of this sh*t film to make the long, agonizing watch worth it, I feel it was a big scam the whole time. Duchovony is rushing through his lines, visibly bored, and aware of how bad the film is-- but still there because there is a paycheck. Anderson actually does a well job of acting, but her lines and role in the film is written quite badly, so it does her and the film no good.
To top it off, some of the story revolves around a character who was a priest and convicted pedophile, though there is nothing in the film that explains the situations pertaining to that, either. It almost seems like the movie is trying to brainwash people into accepting pedophiles and forgiving them. Well, I do not forgive X-Files or Chris Carter, and I hope you do not make the same mistake I have by watching this 36 million dollar piece of trash.
King of New York (1990)
The King of Gangster Flicks
I give the title "King of Gangster Flicks" for many reasons.... no spoilers.
First off, find the DVD release of this film, on VHS the quality of picture was rather poor (very dark).
this stands right next to Scarface as it's ugly yankee twin brother .. Cocaine is visible in actor's noses, most of the characters in the movie are overly vulgar and hostile , with a rather unattractive cast.
it's a straight cold blooded gangster film that makes many others pale in comparison.
Fishburne's character is best described as a nightmarish cartoon, Caruso is a vigilant maniac with a witty sense of humor... Walken delivers as usual
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Best of the Series
the A Nightmare on Elm Street series is by far my least favorite of the original 70's and 80's horror franchise (compared to Friday the 13th, Halloween, Amityville Horror, etc). The original film took me a couple of times to appreciate (Yes, I am surprisingly a fan of the remake over the original, though Robert Englund will always look better as Freddy...yes I was even surprised myself when it hit me).
So that being said, in my opinion ANoEM 3: Dream Warriors is the best the series has to offer besides the original (and New Nightmare, though that isn't apart of the same name franchise).
It has Patricia Arquette (darling she is) and Laurence Fishburne in this film, two strong actors who never fail to deliver their parts in a realistic or at least well played fashion (something not present in a lot of the sequels IMO).
Also the kill scenes are quite innovative for the time, a few times the movie tricked me as well with the dream sequences. If you are interested in the series, this one should not disappoint you.
Illtown (1996)
heroin scarface
As the title says, I find this to be sort of the 'heroin' version of Scarface though the stories are not identical. The movie features strong actors who can be seen in movies/shows like True Romance, Copland, American Pie, The Sopranos, The Substitute, Ransom, etc.
The movie is trippy/surreal so in some ways it's comparable to David Lynch's directing style. The story revolves around drug dealers and an ex-dealer getting out of prison and trying to reclaim his place in the drug world in Florida. i don't want to give the story away, but you can assume from the aforementioned summary of the plot, that there will be friction, and deaths.
strong movie, obviously from the rating, it's poorly underrated.
Club Vampire (1998)
very acquired taste
All of the acting is good and I can not emphasize enough on the artistically genius way this film was directed. The film is graphic but there is enough black humor to put it off, otherwise it would be a cold and brittle film. If you have seen nearly every vampire movie ever created or are trying to, you could like this, if you're open minded and not one to compare.
I am not saying that this movie is substandard or inferior to any other vampire movie, just definitely one of a kind, and obviously misunderstood. not for squeamish or prudes.
If you like David Lynch and violent vampire films, you might like this. I wasn't too fancy on the soundtrack but it wasn't horrible either, soft goth rock or something like that but the OST is fine.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Actually pretty good!
The only reason I bothered seeing this on opening day is because it was around the time of my birthday, and a friend took to the movies as a gift. I for sure thought up until the first kill scene that this movie was going to be typical re-make for the $$$ garbage. After said scene (no spoilers), the whole theatre gasped, before bursting out into laughter. Talk about reaction! I ended up enjoy this movie very much, and the storyline of Freddy's background adds for interest plot line. Of course, no Freddy K. will ever look as ghoulish as mr. Robert Englund, but the Freddy portrayed in this movie is far more sadistic than the original.
