Matchstick Men (2003)
A tiny gem of a film!
A decently made drama from beginning to end. The film starts slow but then takes on a brilliant flow, from the beginning itself, you are easily glued to the screen, totally engaged in the characters, specially 'Roy' played brilliantly by Nicholas Cage, 'Roy' is a person who will communicate to you with just his eyes and facial expressions and Cage effortlessly breathes enough life into the character, making this one of his best performances without a doubt and it is actually 'Roy' you are witnessing and not the actor Nicholas Cage. Surprisingly brilliant performance from Alison Lohman who plays 'Angela'. The chemistry between Cage and Lohman are just enough to get you involved in the whole scenario of the film. A similarly good performance from Sam Rockwell as well. 'Matchstick men' will surely draw you to its situations, the moods and mostly its characters. A tiny little gem of a film, not to be missed.
The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)
A gem in the history of cinema!
Stunning, absolutely stunning. Whenever one witnesses a film like 'Legend of Bhagat Singh', one can only just stare and mentally get back to the earlier days. It's hard to find a single flaw throughout the film as the whole cast and crew join hands to give a stunning presentation of the events that took place in 1928 British-India. Ajay Devgan is absolutely brilliant, he gives a performance of a lifetime! Devgan effortlessly gets in the shoes of the legendary patriotic hero and takes us on a ride through history. An excellent performance from almost the whole cast and above all Sushant Singh who gives his very best as 'Sukhdev'. Top notch performances along with a beautiful score is not all you will get, there is much more here that makes the film much more than just a biographical epic.
In the list of top Biography epics like 'Joan of Arc - The Messenger', 'Queen Margot' and many more, 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh' definitely hits the list as well. It's a true masterpiece.
Raat (1992)
A very tiny horror masterpiece!
I remember seeing this the first time, when I was just seven years old and for some weeks, I couldn't sleep with the lights off. 'Raat' is undoubtedly one of the very rare genuine horror films of its time that can never be forgotten, because of quite a few reasons and a primary reason being it's impeccable cast performance, specially Revathi who gives a brilliant and effortless performance as the protagonist of the story. A fabulous performance from Om Puri as well, who breathes even more life into the story without a doubt. this is a film that always reminds us of of Ram Gopal Varma as one of the very few good directors of all time.
Overall, this film will make you shiver for sure, It is not a great film, but the performances are very memorable.
Gangaajal (2003)
A very real drama revolving around politics, police and public.
Firstly I must say I was very, very impressed with the realism of the whole atmosphere throughout the film, the initial setting is enough to engage your whole mind to the screen. Well, what makes the film shine so much? there are about several reasons.Ajay Devgan gives his very best performance here, as he did in 'Legend of Bhagat Singh'. Devgan manages to capture every emotion possible, by a man who is a policeman but also a human being, Gracy Singh does a decent work as well, despite having very brief appearance. Apart from Devgan's powerhouse performance, it's practically the whole cast that deserves to be applauded for doing justice to their various roles as well, above all Manoj Joshi and Yashpal Sharma deliver brilliant performances that just breathes even more life into the film. There is not a single cast actor who hasn't done any justice to his character, therefore 'Gangajal' is a small masterpiece and one of the rare gems of Bollywood drama. because of its honest team work by the whole cast and crew. A film you simply cannot ignore. Without a doubt, it's a 9.7 out of 10!
Threesome (1994)
A very, very rare gem that never gets old and keeps on shining!
'Threesome' is one such film that you simply cannot overlook or avoid. Films like this are very rare to witness these days where the plot is very simplified and revolves around just three college friends and their self discoveries. Very, in fact very rare films focus on college life in such a close manner and this film is much more than just three college friends in a room. In brief, 'Threesome' is the perfect example of a simplified cinema with a neat and perfect execution in every sense, from the precise direction by Andrew Fleming to the brilliant performances by Josh Charles, Lara Boyle and Stephen Baldwin.
Charles, Boyle and Baldwin deliver one of their very best performances here, easily giving you the impression that you are just witnessing three friends and not the actors. The chemistry between these three is very touching and strong enough to keep your eyes glued to the screen, making you a part of their journey throughout the film. Its a film that gets better and better on repeated viewings, trust me you will never get enough of it, its really a ride. A 9.9 out of 10!
House of Games (1987)
The lady and the gambler!
Very 'Precise', if said in one word. In this film you will witness day to day life characters, the plot is simplified but its not just about a psychiatrist getting acquainted with a gambler, its much more deeper than that. Joe Mantegna is simply brilliant, succeeds in playing the role of a gambler to perfection, he is very precise and shines with flamboyancy throughout the film. It's quite simply one of his best performances. Lindsay Crouse is excellent. She has a stunning sexual appearance throughout the film, and her chemistry with Mantegna is so strong and deep, you can't help but glue your eyes to the pair, every single dialogue, every single action or even a movement grabs your attention. The film gets dark slowly, situations slowly get unpredictable and then you start wondering whom to trust and whom not to. The film is wroth watching many times, its totally a joy ride. Without a doubt, its a 9.7 out of 10
American Beauty (1999)
Much more than just a drama, a film that could change your life!
'American Beauty' is not just a film to view or a story to adore, it is something more like a vast experience, a journey to witness and when do you realize these things? it is when you meet the protagonist, this very ordinary and common man called Lester Burnham, played beautifully by Kevin Spacey, but it is not Spacey, whom we witness on screen, it is Lester the man. Let's just forget everything else and simply stare at Lester's life as he narrates to us. The fact is it is not just Spacey who breathes life into the film, almost every character shines in their respective roles, giving a perfect team work. What the film demands for is, how you, the viewer studies the various characters. What supports Spacey's brilliant performance are an excellent support from Annette Benning, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley and Mena Suvari. Apart from them the rest other cast give a worthy support. You can't help but gaze at the entire cast performance and get involved with them each mentally because you are forced to see situations from their individual perspectives. Nothing more to say, watch out this film yourself and you will realize that a life can be much more than you ever thought. Trust me, you will think it over and over again, its not just a film but a mild experience. Without a doubt, its a 9.9 out of 10.
L'été meurtrier (1983)
A warm mysterious summer!
French cinema yet once again proved its brilliance through this tiny masterpiece. The film was to be described in one word, it would be 'Unpredictable', you never know what will be the next thing or what will be the next intention of a character will be. 'One deadly summer' is a film about characters you may or may not be familiar with in real life but you certainly will believe them. Isabelle Adjani is very precise and shines with excellence in her role, she gives one of her very best performances here. Alain Sounchon delivers a remarkable performance, and the chemistry between these two are beyond words. The film oozes with mystery every moment, though having situations very believable and genuine and the characters development is so strong, so deep, that you will be forced to see every situation from their individual perspectives. A film to look out for. Simply one of those few fine European films you cannot afford to avoid, undoubtedly a 9.8 out of 10!
The Omen (1976)
A disturbing and terrifying tale, a masterpiece of horror!
The Omen' is one of those few, in fact very few realistic horror films.
Excellent chemistry between Greggory Peck and Lee Remick, the romantic score by Jerry Goldsmith is simply delightful. Billie Whitelaw was fabulous as the evil Governess, she was very expressive and done her part really well. David Warner as usual gives his best performance and Patrick Troughton is simply remarkable. Last but not the least, the child actor Harvey Stephens delivers a spellbinding performance, the evil expressions portrayed from the little child is very believable, enough to haunt your mind, right there on your seat. A haunting score from Jerry Goldsmith, lavish scenarios and a neat direction from Richard Donner, makes the film a true classic. If you love horror classics, trust me you will definitely love this one too. Its undoubtedly a 9.8 out of 10!
