Hex (2004)
By calling Hex the 'British Buffy' it is doomed to be laughed at. Give it a chance to be Hex not Buffy!
Before I ever watched this show I had heard people only slaying it. Saying it was shockingly stupid and flawed.
After watching the first episodes of the 2nd season I was confused, because I could not share my colleagues and tutors disgust for the show. Yes, it sometimes is visibly terribly over-styled, but on the other hand therefore sometimes stunningly beautiful. It does have technical weaknesses and sometimes bumpy transitions that you wouldn't even get away with in filmschool. TV should probably have a higher technical standard, but if they had we would not get to see this lovely, enjoyable, trashy story! Story-wise it is nowhere near the standard of Buffy. You will never hear that brilliant dialogue, never see such fantastic performances and brilliant story-turns. But Buffy was a phenomenon and by calling Hex the British Buffy it is doomed to be laughed at. It could never stand up to Buffy's standards. The thing is that it is not Buffy. It is a show with similar themes. But I think especially the humour is different and something people are not getting. If you don't take Hex to serious it is a very enjoyable show. If you take it for what it is, a funny, flawed, very brave, individual show you will get a lot of enjoyment, romance and drama out of it. For me Hex is a bright light in the sky of British television, and I am extremely thankful for it!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
A TV Series that brilliantly used it's format
It is really that easy for me to say that everyone who does not like "Buffy" did not "get it". Not only did Joss Whedon use the format of the structure of seven seasons and 23 episodes per season brilliantly to show amazing and belivable character developement, like I have never seen it anywhere else, also no other tv show creator has ever structured his storylines so well inside the seasons.
Then, sorry, but "Vampires are not my thing" is one of the most lame arguments. I saw a lot of people who thought they were so smart and to interlectal for a series called "Buffy, the Vampireslayer". But they just judged it by it's title which deliberatly sounds the way it does. "Buffy" is not about monsters and vampires. All the adventures and enemys, -everything that happens is a metaphor for real problems that we all know. -That makes "Buffy" so brilliant and deep. If you watch "Buffy" over some time and really let it get to you, you will be amazed about the characters and how real they are and how they can surprise you, and how much you can relate to them.
Then I don't know anyone who was as brave a Joss Whedon was with developing and changing the show from year to year. The series never stays the same. Enemys become friends, loved once die. Buffy and the gang go from Highschool over College into the world of grown ups. The viewer is almost forced to grow with the series, just as real life forces you to grow up.
It is a wonderful piece of television and unfortunatly judged as a freaky, dump teen show by a lot of prejudiced adults who think themselves so smart that they don't need to look at something thoughtfully before they judge it.
Chicago Joe and the Showgirl (1990)
this film is totally misjudged!!!
I don't understand why most people don't like the film or even find it boring! It is one of my favorite films! I admit I don't know much about the true case, but I can tell you about the film as a fictional story: It is one of the most atmosperic films I know. The pictures are great. London's empty streets at night in wartime... the art directing really gives you the feeling of the time and place. The music, often pieces by Benny Goodman are brilliantly used to support situations and also of course is historically very well fitting. The dance scene is the most intense swing dance scene I have ever seen on film and I have seen all the Fred Astaire movies! The directing is very interesting and a bit experimental. It gives you a brilliant view into the inside of the characters. Georgina dreaming about fame and adventure likes to see "Ricky" as a really cool gangster, and herself with him as his stylish girl in his elegant car, -so we suddenly see them like that. It's an interessting and thrilling effect, not at last because especially Kiefer plays beautyfull with his charakter and the different ways he can be seen by Georgy, his actual girlfriend or the viewer. Also you get a really strong connection to Kiefer's character. I really started to feel sick and associated with him, feeling the nightmare, that he was in. Georgy is well played too, you get her childish curiosity and passion for danger, adventure and power, which is kind of charming at first, but then you also see her through "Ricky's" eyes as a demonic, dangerous killer, that is disgusting and terrifying in the same way as seductive. Even I, as being a woman can totally understand his conflict and the nightmare he is going through. I can not understand how this film can bore someone, I think it is a real treasure!
