What/If (2019)
Every episode is worse than the last!
Review contains HUGE spoilers, the problem is that the things that I will mention here will spoil the viewing experience anyway.
Problem with this show is that it's hugely unrealistic. The premise starts off nicely with a discussion of What/if and how a tiny change could have huge consequences. Never touched again in the rest of the show. There are also a few side stories (two and a half more or less) which are also unrealistic, badly written, annoying to watch, unclear why they're there because they turned out to have ZERO impact on the main storyline.
Character development is seriously subpar. I have the idea that all or most of the actors are pretty good but they seriously have very little to work with. It's all so unbelievable, mainly the main two female characters. Actions often don't make sense, everybody keeps acting out of character continuously. It just doesn't stop. It's painful to watch.
Many people here note Zellweger's performance, but honestly the other actors aren't bad either and it's mostly refreshing to see Zellweger in a completely different role. Only to have that role completely destroyed by bad writing. If her character weren't so different I doubt there'd be as much positive response. And to be clear: I think most actors were pretty great considering what they had to deal with.
The story has some seriously big problems:
- signing contract without having lawyer take a look at it
- completely wrong way of looking at / dealing with patents
- reasoning why big pharma would want to stop this is flawed, I don't believe they would (though hard to say in this random world)
- Sean clearly violates contract which causes company to sign over to Anne, wouldn't have happened if he had confessed without the "Anne showed me this and that that night" stuff, wtf, seriously
- Anne is Lisa's mother (whyyyyyyyyyyy?)
- Anne does this just to punish Lisa
- Anne is Lisa's mother
- The way Lisa stared at the camera in her last scene
- Anne is Lisa's mother
I might regret watching this more than wasting my time on Lost. I'm really sorry if I hurt one of the creators' feeling with this review, I just really think a lot of things should have been seriously much better.

Great movie, if you dig the style...
This movie uses a unique style of showing the viewer its story. Yes, it's true, the story is a bit thin, but this is very well compensated by the enormous amount of emotion, atmosphere and beautiful visual anecdotes portrayed and successfully transferred to the viewer.
Although David Lammers' first movie, "De laatste dag van Alfred Maassen" ("The last day in the life of Alfred Maassen"), was better in terms of uniquely transferring emotion and atmosphere to the viewer, this movie also succeeds in doing just that: at some points you get the feeling that you can actually watch directly into the characters' souls, which is absolutely unique.
This unique way of movie-making is, in my opinion, not comparable to most other movies... This is a slow movie that you've got to emotionally "feel" instead of watch. Some people will probably hate it, but I love it.
****** Minor vague/abstract SEMI-SPOILERS below ****** At some points it feels like David Lammers tried to make this movie more accessible by adding certain cues for the audience to make them understand certain issues better. This really is too bad. Please don't underestimate your audience, David, nor it's capability of tying up loose ends!
