Beast (2022)
Great Movie
I have no idea why this movie got a bad rating. Possibly from the trailer, people were expecting a Hollywood thriller. We were pleasantly surprised it wasn't. It felt real. Beautiful cinema photography of Africa. And conversations that felt like conversations, not Hollywood scripts.
In the trailer, Idris Elba is shown punching a lion, and I remember looking over at my wife and saying, "ridiculous." But when you see the whole scene, you understand he's doing everything he can to survive. Not to mention, that punch did absolutely nothing. Compared to a cheesy, overly embellished movie where the guy hits a grown lion and does any damage. There are a few things that may not be realistic, but then again, it is a movie, not a documentary. Speaking of documentaries, don't confuse the tame kills you see a lion do in most documentaries. Lions don't just kill in one swoop. They're known to maim their prey and often play with it.
I also read reviews of how the actors made poor decisions in certain scenes. This only added to the reality of the movie. In life and death situations, people react differently. What would you do if a friend was in danger? If in your gut you knew that person would die if you didn't try to help them? As someone who has been in life-threatening situations with wildlife, I'd have to say you don't know how you will respond unless you're a trained professional. You'd like to think you'd make an informed decision, but in reality, when fight or flight kicks in, that's when you'll know.
Side note: for those comparing it to "The Ghost & The Darkness," yes, it's about a lion hunting humans, but it's not the same storyline. Nor is it based on the actual events that "The Ghost & The Darkness" were based on. Don't try to connect the two.
This movie was great! And I applaud its cast.

Enjoyed it
Somewhat of an emotional roller coaster where things go from bad to worst then get better....or do they?
