Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Kind of a twist
Knock at the Cabin delivers commendable performances by its talented cast, including Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abby Quinn, and Kristen Cui. Each actor skillfully brings their characters to life, enhancing the film's tense atmosphere. Unlike M. Night Shyamalan's signature style of surprising twists, this movie takes a different approach. Instead of a twist, he not so subtly conveys a message about the pressing issue of our planet's destruction and the urgency of climate change. This unexpected shift is a kind of twist in itself and forces viewers to reflect on the world we inhabit. We'll have to make sacrifices. Endlessly plundering the planet is not going to work out.
It Follows (2014)
It Follows you from your nightmares
It Follows is a hauntingly effective horror movie that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The movie centers around a supernatural entity that relentlessly follows its victims at a walking pace until it catches up to them and kills them. This simple yet terrifying concept is executed brilliantly.
What I loved most about It Follows is how it takes a familiar horror trope - the unstoppable killer - and turns it on its head. Instead of a masked slasher or a supernatural monster that can teleport or fly, we have an entity that walks slowly but inexorably towards its prey. This makes for some incredibly tense and suspenseful scenes, as the characters are constantly looking over their shoulders and trying to stay one step ahead of the creature.
The movie doesn't rely on jump scares or gore to frighten its audience, but rather on a pervasive sense of dread and an unsettling atmosphere that permeates every scene.
The idea of an entity that relentlessly follows it's victims at walking pace is one that I myself had as a child, and seeing it brought to life so effectively on the screen had me giggling. It's rare to see a horror movie that feels original and fresh, but It Follows manages to do just that.
Would rate It Follows at least 9 out of 10. Simple but effective horror. Highly recommend checking it out.
The Last of Us (2023)
First episode far better than expected
It starts with a talk show host and his guests discussing what could be an actual threat to humanity, one that we could not beat. Virus? No. Bacteria far worse than black plague? No. A pathogen from fungus. Which could invade a host body, maneuver all its defenses and completely take over it. All it would require is a small mutation to more easily survive a hosts body temperature and specifically target large body mammals. The host and the crowd at first seem cavalier. Soon smiles fade and turn into a worrying prospect. There would be no treatment or cure. If the body's immune system failed, that would be the end.
As someone who has played the first The Last of Us game, the first episode accurately follows the plot and key gameplay events and even expands upon them in ways that couldn't simply be put in a game, without taking away precious time from gameplay itself. Although the game does have lengthy rich cutscenes its famous for.
The world portrayed 20 years after the intro is absolutely crushing. First shown by throwing freshly infected and doped people and even children into a bonfire. People survive and cope by any means they can. Drugs, alcohol, both at the same time.
Everything is run by a totalitarian military and rogue factions. Dystopia portrayed it all its grime. It cant be any other way. The world outside the barbed walls, which have dangers of its own, is far more unsafe. Cordyceps spore clouds accompanied by roaming of various infected mutants and even more dangerous criminals. Thieves, murderers, cannibals and rapists. If neither the infected or gang criminals get you, the infection might. The only way to beat that is to be more cunning and ruthless than either of them. Having a natural immunity to the fungus infection would go a long way. One of our main characters does have since birth.
Without going into far deeper spoilers, you'll just have to watch the show for it to unfold. If the first episode is any indication of the quality of future episodes, then the show will be easily 8 or 9/10 at minimum, even if you're unfamiliar with the game story. Think of the walking dead first few seasons but far more gritty.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
It was madness alright
Visuals, directing, Olsen and both benedicts carried this movie. Was pleased to see more graphic violence in this. People actually getting crushed by rocks in plain view. But it was all tasteful.
Classic Raimi jump scares got me one time, wont lie. The post credit scene got me hooked even more into dr strange story lines. The movie was a bit slow in some parts but id say it was maybe 5% of it. The action scenes were a blast to see. The highlight was the jumping between universes part. Wish it were longer or they stayed a bit longer in every one, even if for comedic purposes. But i guess it would cost too much to animate all that.
Zombie strange looked unsettling to look at. If dr strange broken fingers looks like pain, seeing him puppet a dead himself is even more cringe inducing. Id like to see Raimi direct the sequel with more of his style on screen in the dark dimension. He could really flex there.
Visuals 10/10 story 7/10 acting 9/10 directing 10/10.
The X Files: War of the Coprophages (1996)
My favorite episode 3 seasons in.
Everything from humor to mystery and suspense is spot on. The back and forth phone calls are hilarious. Mulder is unusually compliant. Or denying probably an important phone call, comically so. The talk about insects being true to life's design. Eat sleep poo and procreate. Its unlikely they need any more reason than those 4. For us unfortunately to stay sane and relaxed we need many more steps in between. Scully chilling at home. Mulder observing the stars.
Truly an episode without a dull moment.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
People thought the original sequels were bad...
The plot while it makes sense is very rushed. Action scenes dont really stand out by themselves except for a few moments. Cinematography is top notch. Stunts are top tier.
I cant in good conscience rate it higher than 4. The only reason i dont just give it a 1 is because of Keanu. He and Anne is the only glimmer of hope in this mess.
Matrix 1 easily 11/10, 2 and 3 in my own opinion we're 9 and 8 but still 10/10 just because. This is below 5. I wanted to give it 5 but all it has going for it is nostalgia. Seeing beloved characters was just a bait. The script needed more a lot more work or extended into 2 parts. Compared to even fan made ones or old drafts (that may have been fan made as well) its worse than amateur writing.
Go see something else but then there isnt much else playing in cinemas at the moment. Except maybe for marvel stuff.
Dexter: New Blood: Cold Snap (2021)
Dexter carries it
Acting is great from the leads and side characters. The plot is okay, cant really judge it until its a few more episodes in.
Nice to see Debra. Dexters main interest resembles her too. Think theyre gonna make dexter sloppy and get caught by the end just because of woke culture trend. But all of that is yet to be seen. A show like dexter is again made and released at a time like this so it cant be all bad.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Very enjoyable
It was just oozing a sense of adventure up until the very end. The very last scene could be cut out and it would be 10/10.
CGI was one of the best i've seen and it was always on screen. So it got to the point they can afford to do this for the entire run time without obvious cut backs which is amazing.
Castlevania: You Don't Deserve My Blood (2021)
Perfect things dont exist...
Heres the proof it does. The characters. Animation. Well placed music beats. If there are anything to pick on i just dont care. Cant seem to pick a favorite character. All of them i guess. Again animation was just a pleasure to watch so good that i'll be rewatching this a few more times at least. Best animation or rather direction of it. Goddamn beautiful. Shame 4th season is the last one but on the bright side netflix is working on another series set in castlevania universe.
Voyagers (2021)
In reality would probably end in...
...mIssion fail. They live most of their lives doped then get off it and rush of emotions completely tilt everyone. You have a character try to be alpha who promises protection and food when really its all for his own gain and the rest cave in to peer pressure like fools showing every negative trait we're capable of. That's my only gripe. Could have made it more interesting by having a psycho on board caused by the drug perhaps.
Most of the reviews are about expecting something supernatural/aliens or a twist that its all a simulation and vote it low but in a real situation this is the most likely outcome as far as what could go bad bar some catastrophic ship failure/collision. On an important trip like this there would be numerous safeguards against going off protocol. They wouldnt be able to go off the blue first of all. But that makes for an incredibly uneventful and dull movie. Its aimed at younger audiences by the looks so its not meant to inspire existential crisis that most people seek from entertainment mediums.
Dota: Dragon's Blood (2021)
Expectations surpassed
Dota's lore is just a mishmash of various folk tales and pure fan fiction. They could have taken it a thousand different ways but this was way better than expected. Writers must be having a field day, they can do anything with it. Really hope theyre already working on a second season. So many characters and worlds to show.
Terrorblade and Invoker just about as overpowered as they are in game lol. Although in the battle of the "ancients" every hero and god is brought down to more or less the same power level because of the ancients decree. Winning is entirely down to skill, not capacity for abilities. If the show goes on and nears conclusion, im guessing theyll spin the story into how everyone we've seen in the show is called to fight in the eternal struggle between Radiant and Dire known as DOTA.
Tenet (2020)
Not necessary to watch twice, unless the second time is in reverse.
The exposition dump is fast and if you're not focused completely, things will get confusing fast.
The film is dense but easy to follow if you but focus. Most complaints apparently did not. It's confusing in the first half or 2/3rds but completely clears up towards the end. Confusing not because it's hard to understand but because it was meant to be this way. People getting upset over it is funny.
I'm actually interested in viewing the film completely in reverse just for the spectacle of it.
The movie portrays time travel like i've never seen before and it makes it actually seem plausible. In my opinion Nolan completely outdone himself this time.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
Shows over.
Understandably people are upset and even a perfect ending wouldnt make it feel any better. Its better to have it ripped off fast like a band aid than tug our strings further. This amazing show and even greater cast kept me a good company for over half my life. Ill never forget the good times watching it. All good things have to come to an end.
Im slightly jealous of anyone who just discovered it and have 15 seasons all to themselves. Maybe in the future theyll have a sequel.
Thanks to the entire cast the crew and writers. 2020 is an awful year and Supernatural ending this year is hopefully one of the last sad things to happen.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
3D motion capture and CGI has come a very long way.
Jaw dropping. At times you'd think she was real if not for those big beautiful eyes.
Spectacular action and set pieces. Breathtaking soundtrack. Best 3D i've seen to date, specifically the metal tentacles scene.
Story was enough for me, clearly they are going to try to make a few more movies and i say yes please. Hopefully it does well at the box office because the world is interesting and there's really nothing like it, at this level of quality out there anyway. Can always trust Cameron's work to be excellent.
Cant wait for bluray to watch this a dozen more times for the gorgeous visuals.
10 out of 10 for the entertainment, the minor flaws didnt even get enough time to be noticed at least for me.
Origin (2018)
Mix of my favorite movies.
Sunshine, event horizon, the thing to an extent. Dont see any alien similarities though. Except for set pieces perhaps. Regardless it's a fun watch and despite what people say.Has great acting. Scrolling through a few reviews who hate on the first episode u can tell theyre not even paying attention so why are they bothering to watch something. Hella fun 10/10 from me and if there was anything that annoyed me i dont really care. The end scene cliffhangers worked wonderfully... its so good ill just watch one more episode. and another one.... Oh look it's 2 in the night. It's interesting that the alien became human.
Venom (2018)
Great snack
Everything youd want from a Venom movie. Good cgi, great leads and now if there is a sequel they'll do anything they want. Hope there is no spiderman and if there has to be Venom should be a main character in his movie. Unless they plan to pull Avengers or something.
