We Want Our Mummy (1939)
genius
This may be the funniest of the stooges shorts, besides the one where they build a house for their new wives. shouldn't be missed by any fans of comedy. The world would be better if the stooges and marx brothers were still living.
I myself never laughed at any predicaments that the friends or will and grace get into, but seeing moe hit curly with a shovel, pure comic gold.
thank you william
Brother (2000)
a wonderfully wonderful movie
I don't know what to really say about brother, except that it is a brilliant gangster movie.
Beat is an incredible actor/director/writer. I love his slow methodical pacing, i compare its pacing to jim jarmusch (down by law), terrance mallick (days of heaven, bad lands, thin red line), and the great abel ferrara (particullary king of new york, bad lt. and the funeral).
He uses violence a lot like sergio leone, a lot of down time then a burst and its over, leaving a bloody mess that the great sergio only was allowed to show in his masterpiece once upon a time in amerca.
Beat, i like as a character, he is easily recognized much like charles chaplin, woody allen, clint eastwood, in his native japan. I hope that he will make a splash here in the states, and the studios whenever they let him, just give him enough of a budget, so they don't make the same mistake that they made with john woo and let him do windtalkers (a movie that i dig, but audiences and critics lambasted)
The story is familiar to fans of character based crime movies, its all about loyalty, much like the godfather series, goodfellas, the killer, resevoir dogs, king of new york, gangster number 1, once upon a time in america, mean streets, a better tommorow and a slew more of movies.
give this a chance, its well worth the investment
sincerly william
King of New York (1990)
a fantastic movie
hey now
I watch this movie over and over again, and i think i put my finger on it, finally, its a throwback to movies such diverse as public enemy, the films of john woo, and even a little bit of walter hills movie's from the warriors to johnny handsome era. A was in my opinion a predecessor to the films of beat takeshi kitano, luc besson, gangster number 1 and boondock saints.
First of what a cast, Chris Walken is so chilling of a lead, giving a performance that if he would have died after the making of this movie, he would be remembered like James Dean is remembered. Larry Fishburne makes his mark as a action star to equal to one jean reno or chow yun fat, even doing a double fisting gun salute to the latter. Victor Argo, Wesley Snipes and David Caruso put in very good perfomances in this flick. Troma fans should also note that a certain toxic avenger's girlfriend, phoebe legere (from part 2 and 3) makes a small bare assed appearence in this movie.
I think that this movie is so watchable mostly because of the nicky st. john script and abel ferrara's brilliant pacing, and the action scenes are a combination of sergio leone and sam peckinpah, with the build up to the gun fights leone like, and the shoot outs peckinpah like.
It is a wonderful movie, that shows an action movie can be art movie at the same time.
thank you for taking the time to read this
