Jim Jefferies: I Swear to God (2009 TV Special)

Dull unfunny man.
3 September 2010
I am watching this right now on HBO, and I haven't laughed once. It's not that it's offensive; it's that this man is blindingly unfunny. I don't care who a comic insults if there is an actual joke behind it ...somewhere.

I love Louis CK, Chris Rock (misogynist, yet damn funny), The late greats George Carlin, Bill Hicks and Richard Pryor.... Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, David Cross, Margaret Cho, Dana Gould, Jimmy Carr, Dylan Moran, ..all can be as insulting, arrogant and offensive as they please. Because they have the jokes to back it all up.

No one cares if a joke is PC or not. We just need a comedian to be funny. He needs to stop hiding behind outrageousness and write an actual joke.

Be funnier

Reaper (2007–2009)

A good non-cable show !? Who knew?
20 October 2007
Reaper was much much better than I thought it was going to be; consistently funny and not predictable in the way that most sitcoms are. It is a regular on my TiVo list now, I can only hope that the network doesn't kill it off for some lame reality show replacement. If you get a chance, watch it, it is the rare network show that is funny without resorting to being dumb. It's so strange to actually have something decent to watch on regular TV! Excellent casting, especially for the Devil.

Oh, and the person who was reminded of Shaun of the Dead - the unlikely loser hero with the fat maladjusted buddy is a comedy standby. Shaun of the Dead borrows from some of the best as well - Ghostbusters, Army of Darkness, etc....But the comparison to Shaun of the dead is really a compliment - watch Reaper folks, you won't regret it, and you will actually laugh for a change.

Still can't believe that this is on Network TV.....it's too good, someone must have made a mistake.

Seamless (2005)
Great small film
28 February 2007
Sort of the actual Project Runway. I had no expectations, but was totally drawn in by this film, a simple and candid look at the somewhat ugly innards of the fashion business. I doubt anyone without some peripheral experience or knowledge of the industry realizes how grueling it actually is; the fact that you can be touted as a success and yet still be up to your eyeballs in debt. The filmmaker did an excellent job of capturing the subjects and the tension was tangible. My personal favorite was the Russian designer of the Cloak line, I hope he succeeds in the business.

Plus, you get to see Claire Danes get hit in the head with a camera.(just joking)

Bowery Dish (2005)

Well done look at gentrification of the lower east side
28 February 2007
I moved away from NYC quite awhile ago, but it's still shocking to see how much my old hangouts have changed. It makes me laugh that the forerunner (of the new breed) of restaurant hot-spots is built on the (remodled) bones of that old gas station that was on Bowery for ages. Gentrfication is inevitable, but here the changes are being noted and examined, the little stories are being told. I also liked the in depth look at the general gentrification theory noted by the talking head from NYU; the fact that NYC is becoming more like Paris, with a centralized rich city, with most of the population that does the actual work and heavy lifting pushed to the outer suburbs/boroughs. It does make me wonder if any of the fresh blood that makes NY what it is will be able to afford Manhattan ever again. Well done look at the process.

RIP CBGBs

Pretty Things (2005 TV Movie)

I wish it had been better
10 January 2007
This is playing on HBO again, I missed it the first time it aired. Now I wish I hadn't bothered, as it just annoyed me.

I love the topic.. a great film is yet to be made on this subject....but I have to agree with the negative reviews offered by the other posters. The Director/writer blew it entirely, she shows no respect to the performers she is interviewing etc...I don't really care to see an hour or so of a spoiled little girl play dress up. She continually crowds out her subjects, talks over them and generally acts like an 8 year old who wants the attention of the camera all to herself. It doesn't even seem like she did her research at all. What a waste. I hope someone else does these ladies justice in a documentary soon. Maybe some of the new revival performers can put together the documentary that we were all expecting.

Kind of sweet, kind of funny.
12 October 2006
Have you ever noticed how very seriously some "reviewers" on IMDb take themselves? Who puts this much thought into reviewing a silly movie with fart jokes?

This isn't a masterwork for sure, - but c'mon, it's just a silly comedy. Lighten up. It does what it set out to do - it's funny. If you went into a Dane Cook Jessica Simpson comedy expecting anything else - please. Who are you kidding? I gave it extra stars because some people seemed determined to rake it over the coals. It's cute and not a bad comedy with some actual laughs in it. The side men such as Dax Shepard, Effran Rameriez, Harlon Williams and Andy Dick provide the biggest laughs. See it, don't see it - but please stop ranting as if it's a crime against...whatever.

Perfect *spoilers
15 June 2006
One of my favorites. I really can't add much to the glowing reviews previously posted - this is a perfect movie.

I feel very sorry for the people who see the film as slow or boring – the script is perfection, the imagery sublime and the casting/acting as dead-on as I have ever seen. Perhaps these dissenters just don't get the whole stoic Irish thing….there is a world spinning in Gabriel Byrne's eyes in every scene – if you can't see that …well…I can't help you.

Tom Regan is a perfect tragic hero – a man who triumphs via his analytical machinations and at the same time loses everything emotionally. I have always read it that he did love Verna; you can see it in Gabriel Byrnes subtle acting and in the willingness of his character to keep seeing her. He is fighting his reason and lying to himself about his level of detachment in having even started the affair with her. Tom sees love as a weakness and sacrifices it. At the end he has won - but really, all he has left is his hat and his cunning.

That this came out of writers block on Barton Fink..gotta love the Coens.

The BEST Pixar movie yet GO SEE IT! NOW!
25 October 2004
It was worth going through the extra security for the advance screening. This is an excellent movie. Go see it. Go see it ten times. I think it might just be the best movie Pixar has put out - or at least a tie with the first Toy Story. It combines all the best of both the James Bond and Super hero genres...go see it! Sure, it looks cool - but the character work and the script (pay attention Dreamworks and Disney) is what makes it spin. You can bounce a quarter off of any part of this film - it's solid storytelling. It's one of those films that you want to see again - right after you just saw it. Brad Bird is a genius. And a big thank you to Brad for giving us a lil' Frank and Ollie, animation legends, one last time.
