Suburbicon (2017)
If this movie was made here in England.. It would never have been released. Ever.
There are certain things that happen, here in England, that could ñever be replicated, enacted or even imagined, over on the other side of the Vast Atlantic Ocean, (confusingly referred to as The Pond, by some), in the United States of America.
Take Football, for instance.
A game that is as foreign as it to many in the USA as our spelling of words, in the English language.
There are many things that separate us culturally, politically and aspirationally...
Many things that can confuse, dumfound and inflame the passion of Americans, when they consider the superiority of the English nation, in their increasing influence in fields such as Arts, Sciences, Literature, Industry, Education and Democracy, for such a small, insignificant and barely populated Island on the Northwestern edge of continental Europe. Many, many things.
But there are also a number of things... not all That many things... This film being just one of the few things, that confuse us over here, in this Sceptered Land, that we inhabit, that we just don't understand about the weave of the weft, over there in the USA.
We can understand somebody making a movie where the same actors can be directed to play characters, that appear to be acting out scenes that represent someone channel hopping TV shows, wearing the same outfits, in the same locations, in such a chaotic fashion as this film... but .
But..
We can never understand it being released, assuming critical or commercial success.
It just doesn't work.
Sorry.
The Ascent of Man (1973)
Ascent and Descent of Western anthropology
While I was as captivated as all who enjoyed the release of this series on UK television, back when there were only three terrestrial TV channels available to us, a lot has developed in the last 50 years.
We were truly in awe of JB's knowledge. A super communicator, who had an such a warm delivery. Like your favourite teacher at school. I felt enriched. To be enlightened with the knowledge he shared. At the time you would have to visit many libraries, many times to come close to the knowledge that he had on the subject. The locations, the people, flora, fauna... we're way beyond the average citizens remit.
He was rightly held in high regard by his audiences and academic peers.
However, it appears slightly condescending at points, how he describes the pointless lives of the nomads whose toils in the bleakest of locations, well... amounted to nothing; how women and old people, were disregarded by the menfolk and left to die alone on mountainsides etc...
It actually spoiled my memory of what was, in its day, a wonderfully produced educational masterpiece.
Les Misérables (2018)
Not what I was expecting
Not sure what I Was expecting but I wasn't disappointed .
I'll watch next week
Stoker (2013)
Beautifully filmed and well cast.
We were really impressed with the well crafted film Stoker. The title itself means little to the content and style of the Film itself. The film is rather well behaved and does not go over the top in any way, It really doesn't need to. An easy pace that allows you to enjoy the sets, locations, even the wardrobe works well and is, in some parts significant. Here we have a family that is unsure of the responsibility of the individual roles that would be expected of them and seem somewhat lost in there wonderful, carefree surroundings until the handsome Knave turns up, and applies the mustard to the delicate picnic blanket. The characters are well defined by the cast and the young lady is a joy to watch.I highly recommend the film, And I know that you wouldn't be disappointed .
