Dune: Part Two (2024)
Trash
This movie is garbage. Dune is an epic science fiction novel. This movie completely fails to do the novel justice. Hard to believe it's worse than part one. The 1984 movie is so much better. Again I really have to point out the special effects in 1984 were as good and in some cases better than either of these movies. Not only that but the shameless greed mongers had to change the ending to set up a third movie. So many great stories begging to be made into movies and when one is remade it's twice as long and worse than a movie made forty years ago? How does that happen? Anyone that actually read the book would despise what was done to this story.
The Boogeyman (2023)
A waste
What a pathetic excuse for a movie. Boring with nothing new. Darkness does not equal suspense. Using darkness to mask bad effects is a common method used to mask crappy effects. This movie employs that method throughout. Jump scares do not make a good plot. There's no origin or explanation of the monster. Is it really that hard to come up with something original. Acting is sub par. Not sure if the actors are sub par or if the direction is lacking. The result is poor. The movie is disjointed. It does not flow. Nothing really happens for the first half of the film. It's just so generic. A TV movie on the big screen. Don't bother with this one. It's a waste of time and money.
Violent Night (2022)
A pleasant surprise
I can't really say why I liked this movie. I believe it's destined to be cult classic. Over the top violence and gore but not to the 'Kill Bill' stupid level. More clichés than I ever remember seeing in any movie. No surprises everything is telegraphed. I guess it was just fun. Kind of a 'Bad Santa', 'Die Hard', 'Conan/Thor', mash up with an obvious 'Home Alone' scene thrown in. Acting was OK, directing and camera work same. Nothing to really set it apart but as a whole it works. Honestly this lands in the same category as 'Team America World police' and to a lesser extent 'Mars Attacks'. You could ask yourself who the heck thinks of this but I really can't think of one original scene in the entire movie. Maybe it's the fact that so many ideas from so many different movies can be thrown together into a film that actually works. Whatever the reason this movie works for me. This could become a Christmas tradition.
Fire Country (2022)
So bad
Could have been written by a sixth grader. The actual firefighting is stupid. Fires fought this way would burn out of control and the firefighters would die. Decisions are moronic. Firefighters running off and leaving their crews? The acting can approach good but is generally sub par and not convincing. The show would be better if they didn't fight any fires. Without the fires it might be a 2.5. The editing is not bad but there are choppy areas thar really don't flow well. There's also just a lot of sub plots. More than there should be. The sister, the gay couple, the family, the triangle, the sick mother, the father daughter. Really just too much. This is just not worth watching. Simplify the story line, hire a good consultant for the fire scenes and it might just be worth watching.
Bones and All (2022)
Wow, it could have been so much better
The first 30 to 45 minutes were strong. Looked to be the beginning of a decent horror movie. Then it fell of a cliff. Used to be a movie was 90 to 100 minutes long. Now they tend more toward two hours or more. This would have been a much better moie at less than 100 minutes. It would have also been better if there was more horror and less love story. A decision should have been made right at the onset as to whether the movie would be a horror movie with some romance or a love story with some horror. This was not done and the movie was neither. The dialog seemed stilted. It did not flow. Not sure what the director was going for but I found it irritating. The eater concept was minimally and poorly explained. The bones and all idea just fell flat. Mentioned but no follow through. The scent super power was left twisting in the wind. Why bother introducing this if it's not significant to the story. Maybe I was generous rating this a five.
My Dream Car (2022)
Not a car show
This is absolute garbage. How in the world did it rate a second season. Another car show not about cars. This belongs in the 'who in the world cares' genre. A little personal interest is fine (a little). This is all about the people and the car is just barely there. Very poorly done stilted script manufactured drama. Areas that should be interesting are treated as an afterthought. If it's not about the car don't put car in the title. The fact that this is the first review says a lot. Nobody liked the show enough to review it and this review was only written because the show was so incredibly bad. Essentially a warning to car people to stay far far away.
Ride of Your Life with Courtney Hansen (2022)
Another miss
Yet another car show that is not about cars. Why don't these people realize there is a minimum proportion that a car show has to meet. A car show has to be about the car. Any car show needs to be at least 70 percent about the car. This show can be watched in 10 minutes or less if you skip all the crap. No one cares about manufactured drama or personal interest. When people look to create a car show they should watch a few episodes of Wheeler dealers, Fantom works, or Iron resurrection. These shows and others like them make the show about the car. I gave this series a three star rating only because there are other series that are so much worse. Courtney Hansen does not work in the lead role. She's ok in a supporting or ancillary role but just isn't able to carry a show on her own. Basically don't bother. It's a waste of time.
Nope (2022)
Not bad
After Us I wasn't sure I wanted to watch another on of his movies. This was not bad. The chimp scenes were really tenuous and not necessary. These scenes did not add to the plot. The alien was well done but all the shape-shifting was also not necessary. Not to taken with the ending. Just okay.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Watchable but manage your expectations
The bottom of the barrel in the Thor franchise. A few quips are good. This movie has way to many attempts at humor. The movie is watchable but just barely. As many movies before it the movie can't decide if it is a comedy or a drama and ends up being neither. Marvel needs to do better.
Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)
A step down
Good for children. Put me to sleep. Just not very interesting. Did not live up to the hype or the rating. It was just more of the same. Nothing new. A total rehash. The villains were bland and boring. A good one to skip.
X (2022)
Mediocrity defined
Nothing special, nothing great, but better than nothing. Enjoyed the jump scares. The alligator was pretty well done but why was it there? Things are getting weird and no one has a problem with the shotgun? It didn't put me to sleep but it wasn't far off. I did check the time more than a couple of times. Overall mediocre is the best I can give it.
The Lost City (2022)
Good entertainment
This is just an enjoyable movie. Nothing special. No great performances. Everything has been done before. Given all that I still found this fun and entertaining. I wouldn't pay to see it again but I might watch it again if it was free. Liked the Brad Pitt character. No real chemistry between Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock. Ending was disappointing but it's a gender thing. I'm sure most women found it touching. A 'Romancing the Stone' type movie.
Uncharted (2022)
Entertaining
This movie was a surprise. I was not expecting much and really it's not much of a movie but it is entertaining. I don't know why the people that make movies think they always have to go bigger. Bigger is not always better. Sometimes bigger is just stupid. You really have to forgive the stupid to enjoy the movie. On the plus side the pace is good for the most part. The acting is not bad. I only checked the time once and did not fall asleep. Both good things. Not a movie I would plan to watch again but I didn't go out wishing I had the time back. A safe enjoyable movie.
The Batman (2022)
Beg to differ
This movie is OK. No better than OK. The first 40 minutes you are waiting for something interesting to happen. The villians have no real personalities. Batman needs a better actor and someone that looks less like a goth wanna be high school student out of uniform. Why so dark so much of the time. It was like they were trying to save on the electric bill? I'm sure it was meant to set the mood but it just made everything dark like a low budget horror movie that can't afford really good effects and hides it with low lighting. I think the overwhelming positive ratings are just the initial infatuation. I really don't think this will be rated as one of the better batnan movies once the hoopla dies down. I believe another factor is the movie going audience are starving for good movies. This movie is not really very good but it stacks up well against the current mediocrity.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
A good spiderman movie
The good, it's not a crappy movie, you get to see all three of the spiderman iterations on the same screen, and you get to see the return of some of the best villains.
The bad, it really is kind of a mishmash, lacks cohesion, the a romantic scenes are boring (much to long), and the fight scenes are way to busy.
Overall I enjoyed the movie but honestly it was just another spiderman movie. Spiderman and marvel fans are going to like/love it. Non fans are going to focus more on the negatives and there a lot of negatives that fans either overlook or ignore. It's not a masterpiece but it is entertaining.
Astrid and Lilly Save the World (2022)
The worst
Made it through 3 or four minutes. This is absolute garbage. I could care less about the physicality of the main characters but they can't act. The story sucks. I usually have to watch one or two episodes before I critique a program. No need here. There is not a show on cable that is worse. SYFY yourself and the rest of us a favor and cancel this now. That will make it easier for everyone to forget it ever existed.
Intergalactic (2021)
Garbage
This is just terrible. The dialog is bad. The dialog is rushed to the point of indecipherabilty. Sometimes less is more. Pong, really? Not funny just stupid. They should forget dual story lines and just work on getting one at least reasonably watchable. I actually watched the first three episodes believing it might find it's feet. What a mistake. That's three hours of completely wasted time. I hate commercials and they were better than the show. A total loser. Sci fi needs to dump this stinker now.
The Last Duel (2021)
Very good though dark
Cinematography, top marks, acting top marks, storytelling good but not eeally top marks. This is a very good movie. I do wonder if the majority of reviewers watched the same movie I did. I thought the movie was about peoples perspectives. The Damon character perceiving the Driver character as a sycophant, the Driver character truly thinking he was innocent, and the wife believing she was violated. Each person from their own perspective was righteous. Each tells their own story as they see it. The Driver character does come out the worst of the three but they all have obvious faults and they all have a similar yet different story of the same events. I will likely watch it again just to focus a bit more on this aspect.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
A fun movie
Not a big fan of the rock but this was a fun movie. Just don't take it to seriously. It has the over the top to stupid to ever be believable effects but that's ok in this movie as it fits the overall scheme. Just an enjoyable movie.
Black Widow (2021)
Another winner
Good pace. Good acting. Good effects. This is a solidly good movie. The Marvel movies are constantly above average. Never checked the time. My daughter never left the theater which is a real rarity. She all but ran to the restroom when the movie ended.
Candyman (2021)
Why bother
Another in a series of movies that should have never been made. The first Candy man was a crappy movie. I thought it can't be much worse. I was right but it certainly wasn't any better. I couldn't wait for this to end. Seemed it never would at times. This is a movie that could be improved but honestly it's not really worth the effort.
Old (2021)
Interesting
An interesting idea but not really believable. This was a completely middle of the road movie. Moves along fairly well but does drag in spots. Checked the time repeatedly. Character interaction seemed forced. Acting was Ok. Modify the basic idea a bit, improve actor chemistry, improve the directing and it could be better.
Free Guy (2021)
Entertaining
A solidly entertaining movie. I enjoyed the story and only checked the time once or twice. Fairly fresh idea well done. Good effects with a decent plot. The characters interacted well and the acting was quite good. I was pleasantly surprised. I would probably watch it again as long as it was free.
The Rookie (2018)
Going downhill fast
This is a classic progression in a television series. Start with something people enjoy. Now start messing with what works. Get back to the basic story line. Get rid of the totally irritating music it doesn't fit and it's to loud. On the plus side if it doesn't improve I'll have more free time.
Cry Macho (2021)
Really missed the mark
Not even close to his usual standard. Very choppy. Does not flow. Not terrible but not really good either. Dodn't really see the point in stealing cars. Give the guy more money and have him buy clunkers. Have one break down and strand them in the little town. Ending was not satisfactory. Too many loose ends. Just mediocre. Really wouldn't recommend.
