The Gamma People (1956)
Finally Found This Movie After 50 Years of Searching!
Wow- I saw this movie on TV when I was about 6 or 7 and it has remained with me for 55 years- I didn't know the title but I remember the carriage of the train that the two guys were in at the beginning of the film being detached from the rest of the train and then being redirected to a remote village where a mad scientist was experimenting on people and turning them into goons- I thought I would never find it and it drove me mad so many times- watched so many old horror movies over the years hoping this could be that elusive one- finally found it on the UK Talking Pictures channel - was it as great as I remember as a kid? Of course not, but very entertaining and I can now have a peaceful retirement!
Nothing But the Night (1973)
Nothing But A Bore
The title sounds great- the cast- Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Diana Dors sold it for me- but what a complete waste of an hour and a half- the slow moving story could have been done in ten minutes. The story concerns the mysterious killings of the trustees of an orphanage on a Scottish Island. It starts off in London where the children are on a coach trip which crashes and spends the first half an hour in the hospital where they are being treated before we are transported to the Scottish Island where five more trustees are killed in a boat explosion- who is killing them? Who cares is more the question- Lee is the police chief- Cushing is the London hospital chief- Dors is the mother of one of the children from the orphanage who had her daughter taken from her because she was a prostitute who murdered three people (and got just ten years) and goes to the island to try to get her back after she sees her daughters picture in the paper following the coach crash. I want my hour and a half back!
Texas City (1952)
Johnny Mack Brown in Ghost Town Terror!
Late Johnny Mack Brown western in which Johnny is called in to investigate attacks on army gold shipments- it seems an army insider is tipping off the gang on the shipment routes. Johnny works out that the attacks are being carried out around an old ghost town Dawson City and heads there to investigate. Meanwhile Lois and her aunt have travelled from the East after she has inherited the ghost town hotel. Johnny books into the hotel and meets Jim Kirby (played by Jimmy Ellison) who has been kicked out of the army after his gold shipment was robbed. Little do they all know that the gang's hideout is actually in secret caves below the hotel which is accessed by a secret passage behind a clock in the hotel reception area! Marshall Reed is a familiar face as lead henchmen of the gang. This is one of the better late B Monogram Westerns and a great way to spend an hour wallowing in the old west of Johnny and his friends- enjoy!
Phantom Lady (1944)
Phantom Story
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie after reading all the positive reviews- have seen most film noirs and they are a favourite genre of mine- however fairly disappointed after watching this one- we are expected to believe that Franchot Tone's character, Jack Marlowe, murdered his best friends wife at 8 o'clock in the evening- hopped on the ship that was taking him down to South America within half an hour, got off without anyone seeing him- managed to locate Alan Curtis' character, Scott in a New York bar- follow him all evening with the lady he just happens to meet- then bribe all the people who saw this woman with $500 each to say they had never seen her! There are too many coincidences and belief is suspended just too many times for me to give this more than 5 out of 10. pluses for the movie are the lovely Ella Raines as Scott's faithful assistant and the dark New York jazz bar nightlife which creates a great film noir feel- shame the story is a little bit of a letdown.
Road Agent (1952)
Tim and Chito become Robin Hoods
Tim and Chito disguise themselves as Robin Hoods when they arrive at a small town to discover that local landowner Milo Brand who owns the road to the cattle market is charging criminal rates to cross the toll area.
They give the money they take from him back to the ranchers who can then afford the permits, but when Brand's clerk is murdered during a hold-up, the guilty party makes it look like the work of the Robin Hoods.
One of the last pairings of Tim & Chito sees Tim rather than Chito end up with the girl. Robert J Wilke is his usual villainous role & silent star Tom Tyler has one of his final roles as Larkin.
An enjoyable 60 minute B western perfect for a Saturday morning viewing!
Storm Over Wyoming (1950)
Tim Holt Wyoming Western
Another in the series of RKO 'B' westerns starring Tim Holt & Richard Martin as Chito Rafferty. Holt is Dave in this 60 minute story- he and Chito arrive in Sundown Valley as cow hands looking for work, but arrive in the middle of a range war between cattlemen & sheep men. Trouble seems to be centred around Rawlins, the foreman of Chris Marvin's ranch- Marvin is played by stunning Noreen Nash. There's sheep rustling, murder and plenty of usual western adventure- comedy is supplied by bar singer Ruby who is one of Chito's long list of exes who wants to tie him down at last. An enjoyable adventure which continues for an hour and doesn't let up.
