Katyar Kaljat Ghusali (2015)
A treat for your ears you don't want to miss !!
Let me begin by saying that I don't have ear for the classical music. My father had seen the original musical play and we decided to watch the movie. And what a treat it was !! Starting from the first song "Sur Niragas" you are in awe of the past era and the might of music. I was in tears at Shankar Mahadevan's "Ghei Chhand Makarand". And it's not just Shankar, the other two leads Rahul Deshpande and Mahesh Kale (Yes, they are the leads even if they are not the faces you see on screen) are a treat to hear as well. The filmmakers have done well with the old classics and adding new compositions as well which don't look out of place. I could rave on and on about the music, but I would just suggest to experience this quality of music. The beauty of movie is that while the music is great, it does not fail in other aspects. The storyline is tight and moving well in both halves. Background score added to the impact. And the actors have well with their parts. No hamming. Especially Subodh and Sachin are so excellent that you won't feel that they are not the actual singers. Overall, I wont say "watch" the movie, I'd recommend, "experience" it !!
Shuddh Desi Romance (2013)
Shuddh Desi Romance is fresh and a lot of fun !!
I usually do not write reviews, I just rate the movies on my part. But I see a lot of people did not like the movie for a lot of wrong reasons.
I can understand why this movie wont work for many...The hero of the movie is not an alpha male who asserts his dominance, but a confused soul when it comes to love...The girls in the movie defy social convention and are not dancing around skimpily dressed. The romance in the movie is not about a star spreading his arms in the Swiss mountains...The gags in the movie makes us laugh at our Indian ways...And most of all, it questions the sanctity of marriage.
Remove the layers of the movie and its actually a charming story of three youngsters and their fear of commitment. The movie is fun throughout. The running gag about bathroom is hilarious. Director/writer are witty in repeating some of the dialogs in the movie. Even the smaller details like the mithaiwalla scratching his back with the channi or the fake baraati's asking for gold chain are funny.
The romance in the movie is very real and fresh. Thanks to the natural acting of the three leads. Sushant gets into the skin of confused but honest Raghu pretty easily. Parineeti does a fairer job between the two ladies but Vaani is not bad either.
Rishi Kapoor gets special applause for doing a brilliant job as Goyal. A special mention to Jaideep Sahni for coming up with this script.
Lastly, I saw a lot of disappointment in the crowd when the couple does not get married in the final act. I personally agree with the end because that's the point movie is trying to make.
Go with an open mind and 'desi' romance will blow away the traditional 'filmy' romance out of your mind !!
Deool (2011)
Scores in all three departments -Script, Acting and Direction !!!
In one of the scenes, Nana patekar (bhau) trips over sonali kulkarni(vahini) as he's walking in his home talking on the phone and they turn it in to a fun game (kids play) as Nana is still talking over the phone. The relationship between various characters is so well defined in the movie even though many of them have like a a scene or two.
Girish as Keshya, Nana as bhau, Dilip Prabhavalkar as Anna, Sonali kulkarni as vahini have done splendid job. Girish stands out as lovable and open hearted Keshya who loves talking to Karadi (the cow). I am not going to add the movie summary in the review as it might take the fun away.
What makes this movie really work is its characters. You fell immediately in love with them. Even the smallest roles like 'Audience' (a local guy working in city as audience in reality shows) fit perfectly in the movie. The only thing that should have been avoided was an item song. I would say Lavni would have been more appropriate instead.
Mohan agashe and Naseeruddin Shah have done justice to their cameo.
Full credit to Girish and Umesh for for the script and their eye for the details. Wonderfully written script, brilliantly acted by Marathi's some of the best actors done by a visionary director for a film that will leave an impact.
