Free Solo (2018)
Stunning
I'm still shaking.
Put yourself in the driver's seat of one of the greatest individual human achievements.
Nothing about this movie, or Alex, or his relationships is perfect. It's life, and this is as good as life gets.
Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
Superfragicaliwoopus!
Touching and heartwarming, any cynicism I had about Fairy Tales have been washed away.
Pundits might complain that "It didn't happen that way" - and in doing so, completely missed the point.
I admit, I was biased going in. I grew up dreaming every day about my first trip to Disneyland. I grew up watching the Wonderful World of Disney. I saw Mary Poppins, more times than I should admit, and wished I had hopped into the drawing with Bert and Mary. So for me Saving Mr. Banks was wonderfully nostalgic. And that would have been enough.
Emma Thompson was fantastic, and that would have been enough (I am a bit surprised she did not get a Best Actress bid).
But this movies gives us much more.
A masterful retelling of true events that throws the main character, and us, into our own personal Fairy Tale. The demons are our own, and that makes the hope that much more tangible.
It's why we tell stories in the first place, and this movie reminds us of that.
Flight of the Butterflies (2012)
Watch in 3D!!!!
I saw this movie in 3D. Seeing children 2 - 12 all reaching out to catch the virtual butterflies was one of the best movie experiences I ever had.
Don't get me wrong, the story itself is fascinating, and one can not help but marvel in the wonder of creation and the power of the human spirit. Monarch butterflies accomplish the seemingly impossible. Their very survival is threatened and the movie makes a compelling case for better stewardship of our planet without any finger pointing or name calling.
Recently, I saw the movie again in 2D, to wow my friend. I am sad to say it was a disappointment.
See this movie in 3D (only) and take the kids - you will thank me later.
