The Gentlemen (2024)
Very enjoyable
Having really enjoyed the movie by the same name I gave this series a try, not really expecting it to be that good, I thought it would be 6/10 type fodder but WOW what a surprise!
The casting is superb, I enjoyed every single one of them, it's unusual to watch a show and not find someone nauseating but they nailed it here.
Each episode brought something to the party and as I got to episode 6 I thought to myself "what this needs now is a crescendo" and ep7 really delivered. The final episode was also a treat and they wrapped that part of the story up nicely.
Like the movie, the comedy elements really help to elevate the experience, I'm so pleased they did the movie justice here. As an 8 parter, with this subject matter I'm not sure you can do much more, well done!
Wonka (2023)
Enjoyed it but confused...
Watched the movie today and overall I enjoyed it. I've never seen the Gene Wilder version but have seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a number of times and also enjoyed that.
So on to Wonka, I thought all the cast did a good job, especially the lead, visually I think they also nailed it and I enjoyed the story as it set the scene of how the latter story unfolded.
That's the positive bits... what left me confused was whether I should be laughing more than I did. I only recall laughing on two occasions, the cinema was full and there was no laughter coming from the audience either. Was it supposed to be funnier than this? I don't know!
Enjoyed the movie but wasn't quite sure what I was watching.
Ozark: A Hard Way to Go (2022)
The hardest part is usually to finish on the previous highs
The 1* reviews are simply unfair, you can never please everyone.
My take... I have thoroughly enjoyed Ozark, so much so that I rewatched S1-S3 prior to watching S4, I felt it deserved that, I wanted to remember everything that made it such a good show.
The final few episodes were imo pretty solid, the acting as ever has been superb from all cast members, the only downside for myself is the speed at which the story line took near the end. The show has all been a slow burner but to wrap it up, things that would obviously have taken time to finalise / legalise happened a little too quickly. This happens a lot on most series though so whilst its a shame, I can accept it.
A lot of reviewers are too quick to condemn a series because it didnt end as they wanted and let that detract from the X amount of episodes before it. For me, the whole cast was excellent, its rare you have a show where someone doesn't get on your nerves.
Final ep, probably a 7.5, the series as whole 8.5.
Narcos: México: Life in Wartime (2021)
I hoped for better
Huge fan of all the previous series (watched each series at least 4-5 times) but this series was very poor. The female narration was bad but for me they had too many side stories going off and not enough of a central character. Each season before it had real depth in terms of the main protagonists but whilst Amado was great, the other component parts were weak.
I could watch any of the previous series again, but this isn't a series I see me revisiting.
Schumacher (2021)
A nice story of a true genius
As I watched this, I was thinking there might come a point where Michael was introduced near the end, sat up and able to engage, sadly this was not possible and the realisation that his story isn't going to have a happy ending really hit me hard.
As you will see, Michael is a fantastic human being, of course he made some questionable on track decisions but when you have Damon Hill saying he might have done the same you can forgive these minor infractions.
The man was a genius, a family man and someone who motivated and galvanised those around him. When asked if equalling Senna's record meant anything you see even more insight into his personality.
A great watch.
Clarkson's Farm (2021)
What a great show!
Thoroughly enjoyed every episode, it was a perfect blend of entertainment and with a message in there too, farming is damn hard.
Yes some (a lot) of its staged, but who cares, just enjoy it, go with it and get the reward. Gerald having no subtitles was a genius move, my sides were splitting every time he was on. Kaleb, what a guy, knows his stuff and doesn't care about the rest, we should all be a bit more like Kaleb.m
Clarkson nails this show, comedy, compassion in equal amounts. I feel like there might be another series but part of me thinks they should leave it there. I can't help think they'll feel the need to go BIGGER with everything, but for me they got this perfect.
Interstellar (2014)
I'm blown away
I believe I have just watched one of the best movies ever made. I'm honestly in shock (and tears) at this masterpiece. I'm lost for words, I can't even begin to describe how good this is. Just watch it, then rate it 9 0r 10.
Fringe: An Enemy of Fate (2013)
A great end to a great show.
I first began watching FRINGE around 10 years ago, a work colleague put me onto it, we talked about it a lot. For various reasons (usually the scheduling and it disappearing off screen after s2) I couldn't manage to finish it. It's always been on my mind to finish it, I'm so glad I did.
I think if it was made now, the number of episodes for the first 4 series would be reduced, I'm so glad it was made when it was. S1-4 were just so good, the stories the characters, the incredible acting in particular of John Noble have been a treat.
S5 started and I thought oh no, what is happening? I did read that FRINGE might have been cancelled after s4 but got a reprieve, I did wonder if they would have liked season 5 to build more to the invasion but my initial concerns were not needed as S5 really delivered. Peter was now taking the lead but Olivia's powers again came to the fore and the last 2 episodes were engaging and emotional in equal measure. Well done everyone!
So that's it, FRINGE is over for me, what a ride. I just wish my work colleague was around to see it today.
RIP Becky P.
The Last Dance (2020)
It does not get any better than this
This series is a masterpiece, the story it tells is just superb. Marvel at MJ showing you why he is the greatest sportsperson who has ever lived. Marvel at the dedication and desire that was required. Marvel at the way he elevated those around him.
First class television.
Stranger Things: Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt (2019)
why weren't the previous 8 this good!?
I thought the whole of series 3 was pretty poor. It was confused, we effectively had 3 story lines, I was so annoyed, then came the finale.
I realise you have to build tension and fill in the details but if 7, 6 or even 5 episodes of S3 had been this good we'd have been celebrating a classic, but for me everything that built to this was 4/5 out of 10 at best.
But kudos to everyone involved they sure had me wanting S4 now with that finale, I just hope people didn't turn off before the credits finished!
Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Bite (2019)
So bad
Never have I watched a show that I want to like so much but has failed. How I have got to EP7 I'll never know, S3 has been awful.
Jim and Joyce, uuuurgh, just terrible. As for the rest it's all so disjointed, the spookiness and goose bump moments all gone too.
This show had the potential to be epic, it's failed so badly.
The Highwaymen (2019)
My kind of kogie
Forget your CGI, just give me a story that is well told and well acted and that's a recipe for success.
This film reminded me of True Detective which also starred and then subsequently was produced by Harrelson. A slow paced, gritty experience that gives the viewer a solid insight into the Bonnie and Clyde story.
Well worth your time
Billions: Elmsley Count (2018)
Superb viewing
I always feel that whenever you watch something that springs a surprise it just adds so much to your viewing experience, the season finale did just this.
What we now have is a total change in the show dynamic, Axe despite the bravado is slightly on the back foot, the new kid Taylor feels like he's indestructible and Chuck who is just desperate to win.
Season 4 will no doubt be Axe vs Taylor with a very string side story about Chuck.
This show is superb, every actor plays their part, well done!
Captain Phillips (2013)
Fantastic Film - Tom Hanks is Superb
Having not read any of the back story to this film, I settled in to watch something that my fellow IMDb'ers had rated pretty highly, after watching this movie I am in agreement with them.
Tom Hanks is one of my favourite actors, as a kid I must have watched BIG about 10 times and in his role as Captain Phillips he simply excels. The movie builds the tension gradually, Hanks enjoying a battle of wit with the pirates before the inevitable confrontation, the journey in between is tense, fraught with emotion and even my other half who is not a film fan found herself engrossed from beginning to end.
This movie is a solid 7, but Hanks, with the latter scenes elevates this to an 8. A must watch.
