Becky (2020)
Not all comedians make the transition to serious roles.
Firstly, Lulu Wilson has performed admirably in holding up what was an average movie otherwise.
My biggest issue with this movie was the lead bad guy....
Kevin James was a more incompetent character in this movie than the two blokes, Harry and Marv from Home Alone. I'm guessing this was his attempt to break the mould, but this may be his most hilarious role yet.
Just because you have a shaved head and some tough stickers all over your skin, doesn't mean you come across as scary. Genuinely the weakest part of the movie after Joel McHale was retired early.
I'm sure Kevin McCallister would surely approve of Becky's efforts however.
Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Can we have a movie with just the adults for the duration?
At the beginning, I had high hopes for the conjuring universe. However with each movie that gets run through the cookie cutter, those expectations have been crushed. I'm now without any sense of excitement that these movies should have been able to give me and those of us who love the chance to see great horror.
It's not just this movie that has missed the mark, but the last several. Especially the Annabelle movies in particular.
Why do they insist on throwing together a mindless exercise in lazy scares acted out by kids we have no reason to care for in any way? Instead we get Ed and Lorraine at the beginning for the minimum amount of time just to make sure we know it is a conjuring universe set up, just to see them conveniently depart until the very end.
Nothing against the young actors, they are decent enough, but you always know they are never in any real danger whatsoever, because they don't kill the kids off in these movies, they always make it through unscathed. The outcome is always the same.
So I say, just the adults for once, and leave us guessing right until the end who is going to live or die or worse. At least we have a chance to be surprised.
Bite (2015)
I thought hospitals in Canada have great medical services?
So why on earth then, did Ms Bitey appear to be scared to visit one????
The acting, even by general horror movie standards is awful. Not so bad its good awful, just good enough to be considered genuinely awful.
The plot, could have been interesting with a bit more imagination, however the entire time I watched, I kept saying to myself, why doesnt she just visit a hospital? Its Canada. Your survival rates from getting checked out by a doctor are pretty high.
The effects were, as another reviewer commented, akin to The Fly, even some of Mr Goldblum's mannerisms were used here too I feel. I liked it, and the dark, amber soaked lighting added to the mood nicely.
Best part of the movie was the dog, what a cute little bugger he was.
The worst part, when our lead character screams into a mirror and it shatters and the whole apartment appears to shake as a result of some otherworldly powers which really, was ridiculous and out of place with the rest of the movie.
Lastly, they did a real number on the apartment, looks like it was filmed by Renton inside the worst toilet in Scotland.
The Lodgers (2017)
So what about the title itself?
Firstly, the actors themselves I found were excellent. As was the cinematography, which painted the promise of something bleak and haunting.
Unfortunately, the story went nowhere slowly and let the viewer down on this promise.
Lastly, the title itself "The Lodgers"... By definition a lodger is a person who rents accommodation in another person's house. The house was built by and kept in the family, twisted generation after twisted generation, and nobody else was ever allowed in, let alone rent a room. The ghosts below, were those of the family, not lodgers. This might tell you something about the writing in The Lodgers.
