Candyman (2021)
No Candy for Me
A rating of 7/10 is the equivalent of "average".
Boy, was it average at best...
I'll keep it short:
Some scenes were pleasing, owing to its artistic flare and direction. The acting is decent, although the movie is short-lived (thankfully).
It could have been way scarier. It could have been way gorier. It could have been way better.
I hope Yahya is redeemed when he immerses himself in The Matrix.
Nothing special here. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Old (2021)
Old: A Waste of Time
A rating of 6/10 is the equivalent of "below average".
I was excited for this one: M. Night Shymalan, island/resort vibes, wonderful sceneries, mystery revolving around time/aging, etc...
What. A. Disappointment.
The movie is bad, and I'm not the type to exaggerate or bash prematurely. Check my other reviews for comparison.
In a nutshell, the movie loses its grip early on, when you notice the actors are mediocre at best. The characters are ridiculous. The wonderful sceneries of being on an island/resort are not utilized. Finally, the series of events that unfold are borderline comedic.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Dune (2021)
An Appetizer
A score of 8/10 is the equivalent of a great movie.
The movie is a visual spectacle. Be sure to check it out on IMAX. Backed up by solid performances from a heavyweight cast, you'll certainly enjoy the movie.
Bare in mind I haven't seen the originals. Nevertheless, I felt the story could have had more depth, but certainly not enough reason to trash the movie. They're merely paving the way for better things to come (hopefully).
There's absolutely no reason you should skip this movie.
Happy watching.
The Night House (2020)
The Night House: meh...
A rating of 7/10 is the equivalent of a "decent movie". But just barely...
In all honesty, it's nothing special. Sure, you get a good spook here and there but nothing worthwhile.
The story is "ok" and could have been expanded further. The acting is decent enough. The scenery in some shots were pleasing.
I found myself enjoying the repeated "Calvary Cross" by Richard and Linda Thompson the most.
You're not missing out if you decide to skip this movie.
Free Guy (2021)
Fun All Around
A rating of 7/10 is the equivalent of a "decent movie".
Pointers for CGI, obviously. The movie is heavily reliant on it, and from that perspective, it delivers.
You get a good laugh here and there, thanks to its good cast.
My only advice is to watch it on IMAX, in order to get the full experience.
Enjoy.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Over the Top...but it Works
A score of 8/10 is the equivalent of "above average".
If you're looking for something serious and somewhat grounded, this is not for you.
The movie doesn't shy away from what it is essentially. It even delves into further absurdity, albeit with flare, making it a joyful experience.
The acting was surprisingly decent (we see you, Cena). The direction and CGI were great. The soundtrack, though, nothing but VIBES. It was a tad too long, but exactly what you'd want from a great cinema experience.
Enjoy.
The Hunt (2020)
A Pleasant Surprise
A score of 8 may be exaggerated a little. I watched this movie, thinking it was another with a similar title.
The first 20 minutes got me hooked, though.
It is by no means something special. The movie is over the top, silly, but ultimately fun.
What was truly surprising was the lead actress. She was a breath of fresh air.
If you're looking for something light, amusing and fun, give it a go.
Enjoy.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Meh...
A score of 7 is the equivalent of a decent movie. But that's about it. Nothing special here.
The first half made you wonder. There was potential for many fun/intriguing possibilities. Sadly, it fell short.
The acting slightly salvaged the movie. Heavyweights Amy Adams and Gary Oldman did a fine job.
In short, I'd recommend watching this if it's late and you're considering going to bed.
If you're looking for a movie to "wow" you, steer away. Not that kind of movie.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
I'm Disappointed in Myself Thinking It Could Be Good
In short, it's terrible.
I enjoyed the first three SAW movies, but everything afterwards was horrible. This is no different.
Pick another movie to watch.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Enjoyable for What It Is
I knew coming into this movie what to expect. It's a zombie movie after all.
I clarify that because the numerous reviews of 1s, 2s, and 3s bugged me a little.
Honestly, it wasn't horrible at all.
I wouldn't call it the best zombie movie (I've seen PLENTY) but I will say it's one of the more enjoyable ones. It's silly and sometimes slow, but ultimately it's entertaining.
If you have an affinity for zombie movies, it's worth a watch.
If you're just looking for a fun movie to watch, it will entertain you.
It's grand, goofy, funny, and sometimes touching.
Enjoy.
