Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (2007)
I'm really not sure what to say.
This movie made me laugh, sad, and look away in disgust. You all know the plot by now. Some of the people in this documentary are so over the top, it's hard to believe their real people. One guy has a mullet. A mullet! Who has a mullet in 2007? If you've seen King of Kong, you know who I'm talking about, and he's just as unlikable in this film as he is in King of Kong if you ask me. It could be the mullet that just makes me hate him though. Anyway, back to the movie, a few others have very, um, odd collections, to put it nicely. I won't ruin what they are, but they aren't things I would ever invest it. But don't get me wrong. Some of these guys seem to be normal people you would meet on the street and think nothing of. They all took their arcade gaming experience and made it either the high point of their life, their entire life, or just one thing they did in the past that it isn't really who they are now. You'll feel horrible for some of them, laugh at others, and see yourself being best friends with one or two of them. They may have been famous for similar things, but they are extremely different people.
Of course, a comparison to King of Kong is necessary, and while King of Kong is better, I still enjoyed this documentary all the same. 8/10 may be pushing it, it's probably more a 7.5. If you like documentaries, this is one to check out. If you like video games, this is one to check out. If you're really bored and want to watch a movie, this is one to check out. If none of the above apply to you, then. . . go on with your bad self.
The Girl Next Door (2007)
Fantastic Horrifying Film
This film broke me down into tears. Only one other movie has ever succeeded in doing that, and come on, how could you not have cried watching Wall-e? I honestly would put this near the top of my favorite horror movies ever made. No other horror movie has truly horrified me before, and I've seen plenty. I'm sure you all know the story by now, so I'll save you that.
If you want to watch this movie, I recommend it beyond all belief. However, if you are squeamish, hate horror movies, and can't tolerate any form for torture, stay away from it. Aunt Ruth made her way to the third spot of my Fictional Characters I Never Want to Meet list. Even with how scary it was, I was entranced. I could not look away no matter how hard I tried. It's a fantastic movie. Make sure you are ready for it if you are going to watch it though.
Persons Unknown (2010)
Good. . . but left many questions unanswered
I'll be honest; I enjoyed this show. I love the concept. Random strangers all together in some place they can't escape? It sounds terrific. However, they didn't really explain anything at all. WHY were they being kidnapped? The most I seemed to understand was they were testing a theory about why people acted like they did. I don't understand why they were testing that theory though. And what happens to the people when they finish everything? From what can be seen, Janet's mother was a member of this organization. We're never told anything about *that* though either!
Besides the many plot holes and the unanswered questions, there was one other problem with this show. The characters themselves. They are all very shallow, if you ask me. The only one I even cared for at all was Tori. Besides Janet, who was a pretty unlikable character in my opinion, Tori was the only one given any background where we get to know her. We learned things about the others, yes. We never really understood them though. This is a problem with the writing itself. the writers assumed the reader understood the characters as well as they did, so they never really explained anything too detailed about them.
I know, I know. This makes it look like the show was bad. Don't get me wrong, it is. I loved watching it though. It kept me interested. I found myself sitting there one night and watching every episode. If you're looking for something that is going to fill your mystery needs, this show probably isn't it. However, if you want to watch something you can't stop watching and find yourself loving, I recommend this show. You can fill in the gaps yourself, if you really want. Don't listen to the one star people; this show isn't that bad. You just need to remember there are plot holes. Many movies and TV shows have them. If you watch this show for fun, you won't be disappointed.
