Barry (2018)
Starts great, declines slowly in season 2, steep drop in season 3, and absolute disaster in season 4.
Starts great, declines slowly in season 2, steep drop in season 3, and absolute disaster in season 4.
Season 1 was great, fresh, innovative and fun - 8/9 out of 10. Season 2 doesn't bring much new, but gives us more of what we loved in season 1 and for the most part it's great. Season 3 stars to decline pretty rapidly and almost entirely removes any comedy from the once hilariously dark fun comedy. Season 3 became such a chore as it just spent entire episodes letting Barry continue to deal with this or that in the most long-winded ways possible. There are fun moments and beats scattered through season 3, but very quickly you realize the best moments / episodes / scenes are only times we're not focusing on Barry.
Then season 4 comes... and let me tell you, it makes the final season of Game of Thrones look like tr best thing that has ever existed on TV. Season 4 is not just a purely horrible season of Barry, it's some of the all time worst tv in existence. I would not wish viewing of this season on my worst enemies. It's painfully long, painfully boring, and absolutely pointless. You will find no resolution to the characters that came before. Instead, all you will find is wasted time and most likely anger for how terrible this show became, and you'll wonder was this show actually ever any good.
Fear, Inc. (2016)
Terrible lead actor & Predictable in every way
If you've never seen a horror movie, or a movie, or understand the difference between believable performances or some of the worst acting of all time, then maybe... just maybe you'll enjoy this. But honestly, even then, you'll still come to realize this is one of the dumbest movies made. So incredibly predictable in every single scene, you will never be surprised or spooked. And this is a horror movie, a genre which you know, relies of those two things to simply exist. Now thats not to say that the female lead and the male best friend aren't good at times (they're both much better than this film tbh), but the lead actor is one of the worst I've seen in a long time. He undoubtedly either was directly related to the director or producer, or financed part of the film, etc. There is no way anyone saw what he was doing and decided he should be the lead. Any single moment in this film where even an ounce of suspense should build his awkward and terrible performance gives you the impression we're watching a comedy. He's just so bad, even the D-level horror on display is lost in how awful he is.
Anyway, enough of that. It's probably not the worst thing you'll ever watch in your life, but if you're in the mood for horror, suspense, scares, good performances, passable story, or quality anything, I recommend going somewhere else... honestly anywhere else. Watching paint dry offers more suspense.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Thank you! Paramount needed this!!
Discovery started good but so quickly went off the rails it became hate watching. Picard was nostalgic fun and still a quality recap I'm watching and enjoying. But it wasn't until this series that I felt they finally gave us something akin to classic Star Trek. Delightful and fun week to week and I couldn't be happier.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Started out interesting & fresh but quickly becomes work to get through
Had to slash my initial review from 8 to a 2 (really a 1, but hints of Star Trek lore within occasionally raise it from absolutely terrible to just terrible. Genuinely excited for this show and went into it willing to accept mediocrity and still enjoy it because I love all Star Trek shows. I also appreciated the modernized feel, tech and science. But man, this show episode to episode just digs itself deeper and deeper into boring soapy nonsense. It's just a shame how fast this went off the rails and decisions made episode to episode just didn't matter to seasonal or series story arcs. To sum it all up, sadly it's a series that just doesn't matter. Put it on in the background if you're already doing 2-3 other things and I guess you've got 'Star Trek'. If I was searching for a positive in this - there are occasionally some cool (never fun) ideas and scientific what ifs that make you think, but again none of them ever matter and often in this series they find a way to vip to another universe, another time, another story and revert their own stories. If you want good hard sci-fi go watch The Expanse it's much better. If you want fun sci-fi watch the new Star Trek Strange Nee Worlds. If you want Star Trek watch the later above or any old series / movies. Skip this show. It just... sadly... eventually fails in every way, and it will become hate watching for any of you completionists. .
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Good concept, but so heavy handed it's tough to finish
The core idea of the games are interesting, but the terrible writing, terrible story and terrible acting make it really tough to finish. Additionally, beyond the first game, and maybe parts of the second the games themselves are boring and usually a slog to get through. But don't worry if you missed anything in the show, there will be nine different actors monologuing exposition.recalling what ou just watched seconds before, and even that will most likely be followed by an extremely unnecessary flashback. It's all just so so heavy handed, and this entire series honestly should have just been a 90 minute movie. Look there's some good in there, and I'm not dismissing it entirely as trash, but man, even the ending is terrible in 3-4 different ways. So look, if you want to see what everyone was talking about l, turn your brain all the way off, get your phone or laptop to do something enjoyable and put it on in the background. BUT, if you value your time, find some recaps online or some YouTube videos breaking it down and call it a day. I promise you that you're not kissing anything life hanging or profound - it's a simple show made for background viewing at an airport bar at best.
Santa Inc. (2021)
Yes it feels too R-Rated for R-Rated sake, but it's still a lot of fun
So real talk... this absolutely feels like it's dropping f-bombs, sex jokes, and all forms of comedy you'd find in a party game of cards against humanity a little too much just to please itself, but once you get past that it's a really fun holiday romp. And look, I'm always here for the r-rated immature sexcapade, but this just feels like that part of it is forced, and it's a damn shame, because honestly if it wasn't so full of curse words (I feel like an old man typing 'curse words') and raunch for raunch sake, this could have easily been a massive Christmas hit for everyone. Seriously, I'd had loved to recommend this to so many people, but it just pushes too far into obsurdity and obnoxious 'edginess' that I'm not sure who would like this, or stick it out as long as I did to realize it was actually a really fun series.
Fathom (2021)
Incredibly disappointing, amateurish, and wasteful use of time and money
To put it nicely - don't waste your time. There are downs of documentaries dealing with whales that are better. This doc struggles to fill its run time and more than 80% of it is just taking heads that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the subject matter, or even cursory forms of the subject matter. I'm absolutely serious - the time spent viewing, discussing, exploring, or educating anyone on whales is less than 20% of this entire film. One researcher, who seems experienced, with a plan, a goal, and multiple ways to professionally complete her tasks is barely in this, meanwhile another, who seems terrible at her job in every way imaginable spends all of 5 mins of the film talking whales, then the other hanging out with her research assistants, doing each other's hair, talking about the real world versus nature, and playing games. Seriously, it feels as if we have 15 mins of an interesting documentary, character and goal, then 90 minutes of some terrible home video nonsense. It's embarrassing, and shocking that anyone bought this.
End notes - ignore this film. You will regret it.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Good cast in an overwritten, far-fetched series with a comically bad ending
A great cast doing their best with what they're given. Essentially a 2-3 hour story stretched into 7-8 hours so we could have weekly Scooby-doo style misdirects with random characters. Far too many red herrings, far too many characters introduced into the series only to become suspects, then half-heartedly exist in the background u til the end. Hell, multiple characters even say things like "and I would've taken it to my grave, if you hadn't found out" - Scooby Doo. You'll find yourself fast-forwarding just to get to the end to complete the story, and sadly you'll find the ending itself the worst part of the series.
There are great moments, great scenes, and great performances, but it's far too long, and unintentionally comical in the weekly fake-outs of suspects. Watch if you have the time and just really love the cast, but don't be afraid to fast forward, as almost every plot point is left open-ended, and the ones that do close are more or less instantly forgettable.
Stranger Things: Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister (2017)
The worst of the series
Aside from the quick snippets in which we see 11 has a sister in 8, the rest of this episode is trash. Mostly, I think it's due to the terrible cast, and honestly casting of this episode. Everyone from 8 herself, as well as her supporting cast simply are not on par with the rest of the cast of this series. As such, this episode both from a story standpoint, and a quality standpoint completely pull you out of the season.
Stranger Things (2016)
Great series that loses momentum between seasons
This show is amazing, but with each season taking between 2-3 years between one another, it loses so much momentum. People love the show, but think about it, between seasons 1 and 4 almost 7 years will have passed. Think about that - you could have started middle school and graduated high school before the 4th season came out. It's insane. N no ow, with the kids having aged so much in that time, it seems impossible to see a season after 4, as these kids are now in college in real life, not junior high. I wish they would have. Gotten more serious and spent the time getting more episodes and more seasons to us sooner. Still a great show, just a bummer how it was handled.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
An incredible series that goes beyond expectations
One part coming of age, one part post apocalyptic, one part lone wolf and cub, and one part feel good.
I'd read the comic years after someone had given it to me and recommended it. At first glance it didn't seem like my thing, but then one day I started in on it and immediately bought all the following books. After seeing it announced as a series, I didn't have high hopes. I mean it's a grounded smaller concept idea that is, similar to the, a little weird, and at first glance for a majority of audiences probably won't seem like their thing. But, I implore you, give this a shot. It's undoubtedly one of the best shows Netflix has had in a lwhile, and I think you'll find yourself falling in love with it.
Red Dawn (2012)
A parody of the original at best
Painful to watch at its best, lobotomy-inducing at its worst. .
Look if you have 90 minutes & a lot of brain cells to kill it's not the WORST thing in the world, but it's not far off. Shockingly bad in almost every single way, it's more a shock that this exists then how bad it is. I mean when I say bad I really don't think I'm saying it loud enough. Imagine you're 9 years old and someone give your a legit size budget and cast to make a moronic movie that at no point during its entire runtime Marie's sense scene to scene, moment to moment or plot point to plot point, and even that is a better movie than this absolute embarrassment of a train wreck. I watched this for free and I still feel someone owes me time and money back in my life. I mean, I genuinely want an apology from everyone involved in this disaster.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
ok to bad when it came out - terrible by today's standards
I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out, and even then back in the early 2000s thinking it was a pretty dumb cheesy B-level horror film, and yet today in 2021 I had convinced myself that maybe I was too harsh in it 20 years ago. However after watching it today, it doesn't even hold up to standards of the worst films. No story, no plot, no characterization, the most nonsensical plot imaginable. I mean, why is there a psychic - Irrelevant. Why has no one noticed the 100 other dead bodies over the past few years - irrelevant. Why doesn't a single cop (of the laughable 50 that suddenly appear out of nowhere in this 1 gas station / diner town fire a single shot in the comically long 2 back to back 10 minute scenes where the monster just stands there. There are so many terrible moments in this film, it will just make you angry by the end of it. Dumbest characters, dumbest story, and terrible performances abound. But, if you're in the mood for some disposable story of 90s cheese, it's there.
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Like a good episode of twilight zone
If you go into it with the idea that it's like an episode of classic twilight zone you won't be disappointed. As a stand-alone film it's not nearly enough to stand on its own, as it reveals in mysteries, without the payout of any answers. It's average at best, and annoying at worst, but it breezes by and reminds you of classic Stephen King of old - light on depth, but enough action and plot to keep you interested.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Terrible ending, with no actual ending or conclusion.
This is a pretty good slow burn horror thriller for the first 3/4 of the movie, but then just as all the build up starts to take action, then speed us toward our ending, it just ends... no resolution to any storyline, and an awful non-ending type of ending to fulfill some heavy handed and obnoxious 'symbolism' the director wanted to jam in there. The cast is great, and honestly right up until the last 15-20 mins the movie is ok. But it's then that you start to realize there isn't enough time lifer to wrap up all of these plot holes and thus it just ends.
Lovecraft Country (2020)
Rough start but stick with it.
After a pretty solid pilot the next few episodes are definitely a little heavy handed, but as the series continues it becomes something incredible and entirely its own. It is admittedly a tough one to recommend due to what several reviews have already pointed out - in that it does come across as very racially charged against white people, and due to how heavy handed the first episodes are, it's at times hard to see past that. But, if you do, you'll discover that when handled better (as the season progresses) it's not intended to be solely that, it's identifying those people who were evil to our main characters. And because of the time and era, this is how it was (granted heightened for the series subject matter (we are dealing with magic, monsters, and the supernatural after all). Overall, I'm incredibly glad I stayed after the first few episodes and finished the first season because those couple episodes after the pilot were tough, the series as a whole was exceptional.
Overall the talent of the cast were the standouts. Honestly, every single main character was played so expertly by the cast, that you truly felt you were with them on this journey.
The Last Blockbuster (2020)
Just a poorly made and overtly lazy documentary.
Go to YouTube or google and type in 'story of blockbuster' or 'rise and fall of blockbuster' or really any variation of that and you will find several better documentaries on both the last blockbuster store and the story of blockbuster. This is just an appallingly bad documentary and film as a whole. Incredibly odd and inconsequential choices of people picked to interview, most of whom just repeat the same things over and over.
Can I recommend you watching a documentary on this subject - ABSOLUTELY, it's a fascinating story. CN I recommend this documentary - sadly, no. It's just so terribly made.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
A better pilot would've made all the difference.
Let me start by saying, I've never read the book series before, so everything I know of this story I know from the show - which any time you're making a new media form is exactly how it should be. You can and should never rely on previous versions to tell your current story. Unfortunately this story never gives much if any backstory as to where we are, why the fold is a thing, why these characters are doing what they do, why these wars are raging, why there is such intense racism, why people love and hate grisha, etc etc. After reading a lot of the reviews that grade low, I actually find myself agreeing with several of them, because most of them hit on the fact that the story just kind of jumps in and never fills in the gaps. Sometimes that works, but in this story, with dozens and dozens of characters, the writers never get around to giving us a strong enough sense of WHY we should care early enough. Now again, I rated this a 7 out of 10, so I clearly more than enjoyed it with all of its flaws, because even with that missing information early on the cast & characters were so much fun that I stuck with it. But, I suspect that's where the biggest hit against this show will be - the opening needed to tell us more. I kept thinking, why on earth didn't they just give us an opening 2-5 minute narrator driven voice over of events that brings the viewer up to speed - that voice over (working as one would eloquently in a book) could have told us just enough to understand what grisha are, why they're important, who turned on them, why the nations were at war, what people feared before and after the fold, what the fold is (or even believed to be - work in some mythology of the different faiths terribly handled in the show). Just imagine, if I'd had loose ideas about all, or even a few of these things, without calling out main characters by name, and just playing it loose, every single minute of this show would have been immensely better from the get go. It's still entertaining, but as is I'm not sure it's a show I rewatch, or can necessarily recommend.
Pros:
Great set of cast & characters
Exceptional production design & wardrobe
Enjoyable story that from time to time is great
Cons:
No backstory that gives any form of mythology, history, or recognition as to why were coming into the story here. It just kind of exists and we start here because why not.
Too many characters forgotten too often. The General in the old country attempting to force their independence - Nina the grisha and her former prison guard, Mal's friends, the King & Queen in the palace, and soo many more never come close to having enough story for anyone to invest in before they either meet an untimely end, or just disappear in the series. Too many characters are used as sacrificial plot development for others.
Some terrible acting / writing for the actors, or miscast actors. While a majority of the cast is exceptional, there are some terrible performances sprinkled in - most notably the undeniably bad Mattias, and the good actor in the miscast role of Mal.
With all of that said however, I won't lie - I hope enough people watch and enjoy the series for a second season, because while. It had its flaws I'm still excited to see where it goes from here.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
Exceptional talent everywhere!
From the page to the screen to the performances big and small, this is an exceptional piece of storytelling. If this was on Netflix or HBO it's had probably already won every award, but instead it's on Amazon - where.great shows exist, but no one will ever find it.
If you're a fan of shows like The Night Manager or The Wire (but on a global scale) you'll love this.
Kenan (2021)
Ouch. Everyone involved in this is better than this series.
They reshot the pilot 3 times, had to recast, had to hammer through filming to work around SNL, and had to bring in another showrunner to try to make this work, and the end result is nothing more than an embarrassment for everyone involved. With NBC desperate to keep their Kenan deal in play the forced series feels exactly that - forced in every line of dialogue, in every terribly directed episode, and in every single scene in which the cast seems lost. Who's to blame? There are good writers in the room, the nee showrunner has done great work, and most of the cast we know is capable of at least good work. But each scene feels as if the cast are all in different shows, with zero chemistry and a general lackluster sense of purpose. This show may be a priority for NBC in its fight to keep Kenan happy, but in reality all this is doing is harming everyone who is involved overall career. Please let it end NBC.
Freaky (2020)
Exceeds expectations in every single way. Don't miss.
I slept on this one. Didn't expect it to be so perfectly funny. A good bit of gore, it is a Blumhouse horror movie after all, and that will turn some off (honestly part of me really wondered if the gore was less how much bigger this movie would have been), but if you're up for it it's a really really fun ride!
Locke & Key (2020)
Terrible pilot, gates better as it goes on.
The pilot is terrible, but the show gets much better as it goes on. Episode 2 will still try your patience, but after that it starts to pick up and there's something enjoyable starting to kick up. Is it a top 10 must watch show? No. But, the second half of the season is good, the characters grow on you, and you start yo. It I to the mystery. I am familiar with the original IP, and am a fan of it, and while watching this with someone who had never read it, the series actually covers the original series pretty closely, but the writers adapting it make some questionable decisions and odd omissions. After finishing the first season, I found myself excited for what they could do next season, however hopeful that the writers and directors from the first 2-3 episodes are not invited back.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Not even Hanks can keep this afloat.
Roughly 10 minutes in you'll realize why this once heavily hyped movie came and went from cinemas before most people even realized it was out. Filled with incredibly inconsistent visual choices, an ever-changing narrative direction (none of which you'll find yourself caring for irregardless), and genuinely some of the worst directorial choices I've seen in a long time. And let me say this - I'm a fan of the director Mari Heller, I've enjoyed her films before - they showed talent, and a great thematic filmmaking, but this one is just... embarrassing. It's the type of bad choices that makes you immediately question 'whT really happened here' because you look at the talent of everyone involved and no answer is clear or obvious. Maybe the studio was too involved, maybe producers flexed their power, maybe talent wanted certain things, or maybe the director just got in over their head before they realized it. Either way, this is a great idea, character, story, but the directing and visual choices derail it so quickly and so terribly that you'll find yourself looking around the house trying to find long-undone errands that you can do instead.
