The Expanse (2015)
Bad acting, too complex, boring
I really tried to like this show. I am a good quality sci-fi movie nut. I just couldn't follow the story in this series. There are way too many characters, the story is all over the place and does not concentrate on a single issue or plot. The acting is very average. I really like the production set and CGI; however I think it was a waste in this show, the production set is probably the highlight of this series, and sometimes overshadows the rest of the production. This is a perfect example of that. The script is OK, I don't think it was "massaged" enough; a better script would have elevated the series' quality quite a bit. At least not everyone is wearing tons of Hollywood make up or look like they came straight from the hairdresser, so bravo on makeup and clothing.
Napoleon (2023)
Great cinematography but too much Joaquin acting
I found this movie more or less historically accurate, I didn't have a problem with that, however Napoleon Bonaparte I is certainly not well acted by Joaquin Phoenix, I can't claim that I knew Napoleon but from what I gather he was an extremely proud young man, it seems this movie was more about showing his weaknesses rather than his greatness. The coronation scene is not powerful enough, even though historically and artistically it was almost surreal. I also felt that Napoleon had too much Joaquin Phoenix in him, I couldn't disassociate Joaquin from Napoleon, maybe he wasn't the correct actor to cast? I love his acting in his other movies, but Napoleon needed someone French, which brings me to another issue I have with this film, not a single French actor was cast, or at least speak English with a French accent, and lastly the director chose to end the film with Napoleon war's death statistics! Truly unfortunate since Napoleon contributed so much to the modernization of France, including establishing a higher education system, centralizing governments, a central bank, and much much more.
I find myself not liking the more recent Ridley Scott movies.
Bitva za Sevastopol (2015)
Deep, complex, emotional. Wow!
This movie draws you right from the beginning and hooks you until the end. It is multi-layered story; characters are very well developed. The main character "Lyuda" is so attractive, she has a complex personality and colorful character, she can be funny, sad, angry, and exciting.
Superb movie, worth watching twice. The cinematography is modern rather than classic Russian style, but fits well with the story and the era. The script although in Russia with English subtitles, is mature and not cheesy. The only thing I did not like in the movie are the songs that play during a dire situation. Otherwise this is an excellent film that deserves to be watched. Well done!
The Pacific (2010)
Excellent series except for ..
I really enjoyed watching this series, ever since "Saving Private Ryan" I've always wished there was a knock-off series, like "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific". Acting is excellent mostly, however Ramy Malik has no business in this series, in fact I think he is not a good actor, he always comes across as about to fall asleep, I didn't like his acting in "Queen" and I don't like his acting in "The Pacific". Otherwise this movie is such a masterpiece of film making, storytelling, personal struggles, and the reality of the ugliness of without the political backdrop which can sway you either way, it shows that wars affect us all regardless of which side we're on. The cinematography is so good, it really puts us in the action field of view without annoying unnecessary camera shake. There is no annoying constant background orchestrated soundtrack, just plain but brilliant film making. Bravo Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Hanks!
Detour (2016)
One of the best movies ever made, period.
I didn't have great expectations when I played this film, but from the first minute I was hooked. This movie is a road adventure with satire, anger, sadness, pain, you name it. Acting is top notch, editing is perfect, you can follow the film like a well written story, not just a script. The soundtrack is perfect, not overpowering the scenes like many movies nowadays. The story puts you on the edge, you find yourself defending characters, and hoping they would get out of a dire situation. New characters progressively make their way into the story seamlessly, this is perfect story telling. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates adventure road trips.
Cosmos (2019)
Great movie
If you like low budget films with a great story and very decent acting then this movie is for you. I won't spoil anything but this movie starts out with a simple plot which becomes more complex as the movie progresses, and the complexity is natural, not forced. There isn't a single minute in the movie where time is wasted on nonsense, or unrelated issues. I highly recommend watching this movie!
My only gripe with this movie is the soundtrack, constant orchestral music leading to crescendo after crescendo throughout the movie becomes extremely annoying to the point where I muted the sound and turned on closed captioning.
Oppenheimer (2023)
A highly overrated film with an obnoxiously loud soundtrack
I had high hopes for this film.
Starting with the cast, Matt Damon, whom I really admire, however this isn't a film for his type of acting, his trademark smirk cannot be hidden unfortunately. Robert Downey Jr is unsurprisingly amazing in this film, this actor is so flexible he can star in any film. Cillian Murphy is also a great actor and did an amazing job portraying Oppenheimer's conflict within himself.
Sometimes silence is more powerful than loudness.
The film is drowned by the soundtrack, at times I couldn't hear the dialogue, ok I get it that is the point in some scenes, but when this drags on for about 3 hours, it gets old and boring.
The bomb explosion was weak, yes weak. Nolan's didn't want to use CGI, well sorry Chris but without CGI there is no way in hell you would be able to simulate or emulate a nuclear explosion. The sound of the explosion was not powerful due to the rest of the film being so loud, the explosion did not have a single element of surprise or awe. The screen filled with fire was OK but again, since the rest of the film was so loud, there was no awe.
This film should have been a 2 hours and 15 minutes, not 3 hours of continuous political dialogues.
There is a great series about Oppenheimer and the bomb on a streaming service, that is much more watchable.
Joy (2015)
Copycat movie
I'd like to start by saying that I really like the cast, I am a big big fan of De Niro, Lawrence, and Ramirez and I was expecting a great movie, alas this is too similar to "The Silver Linings Playbook" movie with Lawrence and De Niro, from the arguments, score, craziness scenes, etc.. I found myself doing a lot comparison and couldn't get myself to stop. I did like the topic of the movie, but I felt that the storyline was all over the place is some cases. I also found that from a cinematography perspective the lens choices could have been better, very wide angle shots gave the impression of a cray-like character, a bit too much.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Bad overstretched failure of a film
First let me start by saying that the acting is great, seriously, but it stops right there. The film on the other hand is the product of someone's random thoughts, badly edited, way over stretched scenes and ideas which repeat throughout the film over and over at random intervals. I have no problem with slow movies at all. I've seen "Moon", "2001", and many other "slow" movies, and I loved most of them. I love art in general, I love staring at great paintings, admiring sculptures, and reading a good book. This is not only a slow movie, but also one where every single idea is massaged over and over, and then massaged again, and when you think it is done being massaged, the director or editor massages it a few more times until you are so fed up with that idea and scene that you feel like leaving the theater. The movie is about love, care, and relationships, but other than that there is nothing deep or complex about the story. Alternate reality is not a new concept, yet the writer chooses to add too much complexity where it isn't needed, it makes the movie difficult to follow, especially due to the alternate reality / multiverses of the story.
While in the theater I heard many people laugh at some of the dumbest jokes, then I realized OK, this movie is targeted to an audience who enjoys these types of punch line jokes.
All in all I found this movie a complete disaster, hence the one start rating.
Industry (2020)
Plays like a soap opera
I expected something completely different from the title, production, and the few preview clips I had seen. This show is more about relationships, in a office like setting, there is nothing "Industry" about it, most of the time is spent on personal conflicts, and relationships.
The Godfather (1972)
Extremely overrated film
I watched this film when I was a kid, then as a teenager, then twice as an adult. I watch a lot of classic films, foreign and domestic (US), and I am very open minded in my movie selection. Apart from the music score and somber and tragic mood in the film, I find tp be it very unappealing. The cinematography is wonderful, no doubt, but the story telling, script, and acting as mediocre. Marlon Brando's acting has always been overrated, I always heard Marlon Brando, this, Marlon Brando that, I saw 5 of his films and I never watched others. HE's got to be one of the worst actors that ever set foot on a set. Al Pacino acts like he is running on a 2 volt battery in this movie, and they're supposed to be Italians right? Mafia or otherwise Italians do not behave as they do in this movie, and this causes the film to lose credibility. Al Pacino is an amazing actor, my favorite, but in this movie he is mediocre. The Godfather is a great story but the film fails to glue me to the TV. Huge cast, wonderful music and cinematography, what a waste of talent.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Gone too far
I really liked the Jurassic Park trilogy, from then it's been downhill, and I hope this is the last we will see of these types of movies. People on foot being chased by velociraptors, really? At least have some integrity in a fiction story. Bike chases, overproduced cinematography and music.
Game of Thrones (2011)
I must admit
I didn't like the trailer of this show, it seems very soap opera-like despite some of the action scenes. I started watching this in 2019, and I basically finished it in a couple of weeks. This series is amazing, excellent dialogs, excellent filming/cinematography and special effect, while watching it your forget your TV screen and everything around it, you area completely submerged in the story.
Prometheus (2012)
Excellent movie
I read some of the negative reviews and it seems they went to the movies expecting to hate it, or with certain expectations. Many of those reviewers didn't seem they were paying attention to the dialog. This isn't an "Alien" style movie, it isn't a horror sci-fi, it is a scientific expedition, if this bores you then state it is boring, but don't try to find logical holes in the story when there isn't one, pay attention to the dialog or watch the movie again.
Great movie, excellent visuals, acting is great, ok they are not Shakespearean play actors but everyone did a great job. Highly recommended.
2010 (1984)
An excellent movie, story and dialog.
This movie picks up a few years after where 2001 left off. The cast is excellent, performances are credible, this is not a traditional sci-fi, don't expect aliens and lasers, also do no compare it to "2001 a Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrik. 2010 is less philosophy theater and more traditional story telling. Hellen Mirren is excellent is this movie, along with Roy Scheider, John Litgow and Bob Balaban, all showed an excellent performance. The supporting Russian actors were excellent as well, the whole movie is very credible.
Eureka (2006)
It's alright, got bored before end of first episode
I was really looking forward to this show, it seems to be well written but there is a lot of childish dialogues and distractions, it seems to be geared to a teenage audience. Not for me.
The Batman (2022)
Stopped watching after 35 minutes
Boring and very very slow (is this a Batman movie?"/ The movie drags on and on without purpose, it is like a reading a 800 page novel. To the director: This is not some epic psychological masterpiece, this is The Batman, stick to simplicity, action, humor, and visuals, no need to stretch a 15 second scene into a 5 minute dialog, and when the action finally arrived it was amateur night. I understand the charm in going back to classic Batman but neither the production set, nor the music score match the classiqueness. This was a failure in my opinion.
Sicario (2015)
A perfect movie
Plot and Story: 10
Acting: 10
Cinematography: 10
Film music score: 10
From the first frame of this movie you are immersed in the story and the plot, the acting of Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro and Emily Blunt. Daniel Kaluuya is spot on and very believable, however I am not a big fan of Jon Bernthal, his acting is the same in all his movie and I grew tired of that a long time ago.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
Tediously slow
20 minutes into episode 1 and I still don't know what this show is about, it is tediously slow and I got really tired of the main character flipping his hair right to left and back and holding is head. I don't mind slow movies or shows "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Moon", and others, as long as the story eludes to something, this one seems more like extended content in order to produce enough episodes, not for me. This show is not to my taste.
Rendez-vous (2019)
Movie that has no integrity
So this guy date-kidnaps a girl, ties her up in a sound proof room in his house, but then someone knocks at his front door, he opens it (??!!!) three teens show up wanting to buy alcohol from him, he lets them in (??!!!), etc.. Later on another knock at his front door and he opens the door again. Ok well the guy is not an idiot it is obvious in the movie, but he opens the door while he has a woman tied up in his house? Who does that? What idiot in what universe does that? I like fiction movies, if they have integrity.
Project Blue Book (2019)
I really tried
I really tried to enjoy this series. I am a big fan of the X-Files, and the unknown films in general, when they are well directed. This series concentrates too much on clothing, production sets, and lighting, to bring us back to the 1950s, and less on the flow of the stories and personality development. I easily got distracted away from the TV while watching, it's as if I was watching a continuous documentary on 1950s production sets. The characters are not engaging or charismatic. The captain is boring, the doctor even more. I was really looking forward to binge watch this.
Fury (2014)
Ok movie
Jon Benrthal ruined it for me, same acting in every movie he is cast in, same attitude, same facial expression, it just gets annoying and boring.
I really like Shia Lebeuf's acting and the rest of the cast.
There is a lot of mistakes in this movie, at one point you see people fleeing the war walking in muddy fields and yet their clothes look like they just came out of the dry cleaner, there are others as well especially during the dinner scene when all of a sudden there is complete silence outside the building.
It was a entertaining movie but it has no integrity, once you watch "Saving Private Ryan" everything else becomes third grade quality.
Scorpion (2014)
Good plots and story but childish predictable
This show has great potential but the director chose the typical Hollywoodish route of production sets, scripts, music score, guns, badges, dark vehicles. If you like predictable plots you will love this show.
127 Hours (2010)
Great film
This is a great film, the plot is really simple but the actors and acting are really great, cinematography and the camera action are really good and this is what makes the difference. James Franco puts on a great performance. It's a drama but with a few happy and funny moments.
Apocalypto (2006)
10 stars for everything
This is one of the most realistic movie I have seen, I am completely submerged in the story, characters, camera work, and cinematics and forget my large TV or room furniture. This is a masterpiece of movie making. There is so much character development it is truly unbelievable, a half an hour into the movie you are already deeply familiar with at least ten characters. This move has action, love, dedication, perseverance, sacrifice, sadness, anger, laughter (nothing cheesy), hope, desire, and emotion. Mel Gibson deeply touches every sense in your being. Watch it on a big screen at least HD. I have watched this movie at least five time and still enjoy it.
