Mad God (2021)
Stop Motion Nightmare (in a good way)
Eraserhead now has some worthy competition in the realm of nightmares on film, but this one is stop-motion madness in color. Director Phil Tippett's awards include Oscars for Jurrasic Park and Return of the Jedi, but don't bring the kids to this one. Simultaneously disgusting and amazing, Mad God is a horrific experience uninterested in narrative traditions. You have been warned. Here's another warning: Don't miss it.
Phil Tippett was born in 1951. His other awards include a Saturn Award for Robocop, an Emmy for Dinosaurs, a place in the Ray Harryhausen Hall of Fame and a Bafta for Jurassic Park.
The Last Thing Mary Saw (2021)
The Horror of Ignorance
A moody, atmospheric period piece in the folk-horror vein, but the gore is minimal and contrived jump-scares are non-existent (thank goodness!). The real horror here is the ignorance of the 1840s.
BONUS: The creepy old matriarch is played by Judith Roberts, the "Beautiful Girl Across the Hall" from Eraserhead!
