Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Relatively disappointing, but yet not quite
I went to the movie theater at the last moment and with mixed feelings. I was prepared for a major disappointment. And perhaps that made me resist and fully accept this Star Wars edition. In short, the first time I saw the movie I thought I am done with Star Wars. But... Apparently it is not that easy to reject this powerful dope, the saga turned into for such a great number of people.
After a week I went to see it a second time. Surprise, surprise... I enjoyed it. It touched me. This sci-fi soap opera somehow managed to touch me again. What have you put inside, people? What is the secret ingredient, I wonder...
Many reviewers say it is nothing like the original Lucas trilogy, which it definitely strives to carry on, but I would say it feels very much like the "original" Lucas.
There is one character I still cannot swallow completely, but it seems everything fits much better than the first time I saw it. And I can see now, I will be expecting impatiently the next episode, as it seems there are too many questions screaming for answers.
One thing is for sure - the saga is definitely NOT dead and will continue to entertain us for eternity (as many of us most likely will not see the end of it).
Let the Force be with you all and I do hope some of the basic wisdom preached in the movie will spread around in our reality. As the real world desperately needs it...
Carry on Cleo (1964)
My favorite "Carry on" piece
All actors are great in this one, but Cleopatra (Amanda Barrie) just makes my day every time I watch that movie (or a part of it). Yes, I do keep play it over and over again, as it kills almost immediately bad mood, any form of depression and so on. Personally I do not remember seeing such a humorous performance by any other actress. She's so natural and makes such a great contrast to the popular image of the Egyptian queen, acting as an average modern (for the time) American housewife. The funniest female performance on TV (and I believe on the big screen too) I have ever seen. Cult line by Mark Antony, right after getting a quick preview of what Cleo would do for him in return for killing Caesar: "Puer Oh, puer, oh puer!" Which, as any schoolboy knows, means, "Boy. Oh, boy. oh boy!"
Great movie, great fun from the old school!
Fawlty Towers (1975)
Tremendous fun!
I do love to laugh. Actually I think I cannot live without a good laugh. I have always been looking for it, in books, movies, TV, live shows, real life. But humor is such a fragile and tricky to grow flower - many have tried and most have failed.
I think this show should be prescribed as a medicine to treat depression (as Wodehouse).
John Cleese is at his peak in this remarkable, everlasting show. And the rest of the crew had no other option, but to follow him and give the best bits of their talent and personalities. This is by far the most entertaining, sharp and witty TV show I have ever seen, and 40 years later it still stands - untouchable, with no serious competition. Some other British shows are reaching towards it, but cannot touch it. And the Americans could only dream to create something even remotely close to that.
Shakespeare would be proud of this masterpiece.
Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Bright, sharp, witty, potent and colorful.
Shakespeare, as it should be interpreted for the big screen. I must admit, this one is my personal favorite. And being a Kenneth Branagh fan, I think this is a real masterpiece. His performance is also remarkable. One could easily assume he was in love during the filming of the movie...:) Some people complain about the "wooden" Keanu, I think he was perfect for this role, as his character suppose to be grim and yes, wooden too - in perfect contrast to the rest. Every single bit of this movie feels right and in place. All the actors just... fit. The easiest and simplest test is to watch it several times. I did and I loved it. Thank you Kenneth Branagh, for the wonderful experience.
