Reviews
Dune (2000)
Unique
I just finished watching this version of Dune and I must admit that it was better than what I had expected, especially after having read the reviews which were mostly negative.
It's been a long time since I've read the 1st part of the Dune Saga, so I can't judge about if it comes close to it but I did like what they did with it. It's not action packed like Lynch's movie was, but more focused on the interaction and the story within the story.
Although it was a little disappointing to see that the character of Chani was weak in the beginning while from reading the book one could conclude that she must be a very strong character. Paul's resistance, or rebellion, is very explainable and believable. Who would want such a burden?
The series is slow at times but that's not a bad thing: it gives the viewer time to get into it, which should come in handy for the viewers not familiar with the Dune Saga. I'm sure that for them it sometimes doesn't make sense, where for the Dune-fans at numerous points it's a party of recognition.
The soundtrack is very good too, but what else can be expected of Graeme Revell?
In short: it's a good series but not for everyone. People who expect (a lot of) action are better off watching Lynch's version.
Strong Medicine (2000)
Absolutely Fabulous
I know, I know... that's another show. Strong Medicine is just fantastic, and I feel pretty bad that it took me so long to discover it, but having been an ER-viewer for so long, it was odd to discover a much better hospital series. Not that ER is much at the moment, so my comparison might go wrong there. I just love this show and Rosa Blasi, who plays Dr. Lu Delgado, is just fantastic. When she gets mad, you just want to go into hiding yourself. Too bad that Janine Turner's character Dr. Dana Stowe doesn't give much resistance to the strong personality of Lu and sometimes I wonder if her task is just to have a sheepish look on her face. Lana (Jenifer Lewis) is a great character too, a little over the top like she's supposed to. Nurse Riggs is very unique in many ways, but I loved the scene in which he goes to console Lu after she's been raped and he has tears sliding down his cheeks. He seems like the perfect guy. The character of Dr. Jackson is cold and strict but human too. In short: a terrific show! Funny and sad at the same time, pointing the finger in a subtle way at flaws in the system.
