No se aceptan devoluciones (2013)
It started out as 2/10 but ended up 10/10 to find out why you will have to watch the film.
My wife says I can only see black or white, love or hate, good or bad and nothing in between - there is no middle ground in my world and over the years I can see she is right. If a film doesn't grab me within the first 20 minutes or so I will stop watching it as it usually turns out to be either boring, utter tripe or pretentious. I so nearly turned this off.... On my first meeting with Valentín I didn't particularly care for the actor Eugenio Derbez as he didn't look the part of a playboy how wrong was I. The start of the film tells us of the relationship between Valentin, his ex and their daughter and you start to care for the both of them, the father and daughter have a symbiotic life and live each day for each other only to have it interrupted by the return of his ex wanting to be in the daughters life once more..............
Psychomania (1973)
Spectacular Failure - 10/10 on the Crapometer
I saw this film back in the seventies and recommended it to my brother, he has never forgiven me. Even now when we talk about it (it is a truly unforgettable film for all the wrong reasons) we preface all our sentences with "Ribbit" in homage to the frog, all will become clear when you watch this train wreck of a movie. You become like a deer caught in the headlights of a car - mesmerized unable to turn away - although you know you are going to be wasting an hour and a half of your life. You think it cannot get any worse but it does over and over again. Scenes that are supposed to have you cringing behind the sofa in fear have the complete opposite effect and you end up rolling on the floor doubled up in laughter. The last time it was shown on UK terrestrial television the reviewer came to his senses and listed it not as a horror but a comedy which speaks volumes. It is a worthy winner of the title of "It's so bad it is really good" Having said all that I treasure my copy of the film.
Come back George Saunders/Beryl Reid all is forgiven.
Le samouraï (1967)
Scores 9 out of 10 on the Shiteometer.
If you enjoy watching paint dry then you will love this film. It has all the tension and excitement of getting a stick poked in your eye. I knew I should have turned it off after 20 minutes by following my golden rule "if the film hasn't grabbed me by then it's usually "SHITE". It is not as though it didn't give me any clues along the way like the opening sequence which is just him lying on a bed smoking a cigarette for about 10 minutes interspersed with a caged bird twittering. Anonymous people with minimal dialogue he interacts with (and they remain anonymous). Twice he visits a lock up garage with a car he has stolen - drives straight in - has the number plates changed and is given paperwork before driving straight out again without any acknowledgement or words exchanged. It brings to mind a Scottish television reporter of my youth called Fyfe Robertson who was called upon to do a review on 60's culture and he came up with this succinct explanation. He decide to create a unique category called Fantastic Art or "FART" for short. Couldn't agree with him more.
Hellowoo goseuteu (2010)
Another winner from Korea
I am not a movie buff I just like watching films in any language as long as they fit my criteria. I don't usually go for horror, action or thrillers. I really like sci-fi, fantasy and romantic comedy. And this film ticks a lot of boxes for me. Being in my mid sixties I have got past being an adrenalin junkie and have had enough of crash- bang-wallop films and ones that attempt to give me a heart attack. I want films that make me feel warm and cuddly and put a wistful smile on my face. How Korea keep making films like this to such high standards of photography storyline and character development is beyond me. Hollywood is so predictable and boring that they are bottom of my list when checking out new releases, if they do by accident make an original film instead of a remake of some other countries they don't change the formula until all the other studios have made their version of the same or very similar film all of them crap by comparison. This film is straight into my list of all time favourites. It opens with a young man sitting in a sparsely furnished room shovelling handfuls of pills into his mouth when the phone rings......... He ends up with four ghosts as companions - an old man who has lost a camera another who has been looking for a car, a woman who can't stop crying and a small boy. They are all quirky and endearing and we begin to care about them as their stories unfold before us.........
Lost in Translation (2003)
Needs a new category listing
I read the IMDb comment guidelines prior to writing and posting this comment and especially the section which says:- "Avoid unannounced spoilers! Please don't reveal crucial plot elements. If you include a spoiler without warning readers in advance your name will be added to a blacklist and, subsequently, all your comments will be discarded automatically. To label a spoiler make sure you check the 'contains spoilers' check box."
They need to update it so that there is a spoiler alert that says:-
"IT'S SHITE !!!!"
Was I watching a different film to everybody else?
After sitting through the first 20 minutes it was making me suicidal so I gave up any hope of being entertained and decided to turn it of and go and do something that was more exciting and interesting - I watched some paint dry.
I always check the IMDb rating before I watch any film and was suckered into this one by its 7.9 score. How it managed to achieve this I will never know. How can watching Bill Murray (the only reason I watched in the first place) sitting in a hotel room on his own be entertaining or thought provoking?
It is listed as a comedy, drama, romance. When was all that due to happen?
I can only assume I need to be Italian\American to appreciate it. It's another pretentious "Arty" film that isn't.
Very similar and just as bad as "About Schmidt " with Jack Nicholson, I had the misfortune to sit all the way through that thinking it would get better but it didn't and I wasn't about to make the same mistake again.
