Yongseoneun eupda (2010)
Vengeance at its best
I don't know, what's with the Korean people about vengeance, but they are damn good at it. At the beginning of the movie I was expecting 'who is the murderer' kind of a thriller. However it goes deeper than that. The motive of the crimes is so obvious, yet the method is unique. Sure there are some distractions like the annoying detective who is angry with everything. Nonetheless the movie is quite good at distracting the viewer and surprising them in the end. It is definitely worth watching. But be warned, you shouldn't be expecting some Old Boy here. Korean movies are not a genre by themselves, so don't be fool enough to compare them with each other just because they are Korean.
Heroes (2006)
Making teapots out of gold
This series had a high potential that was ruined by the creators. When I saw the show and what it is about, I was thrilled, I expected something like X-Men but with loads of episodes and details. What I got instead was just a little drama. The way the characters are created is dull. Claire was a misery. And so was Peter. He got even worse once Arthur Patrelli took away his powers. Sylar was also a waste of time, with all his turbulence and instability. The series desperately needed a true villain, but they created little soft villains instead. Many solutions could have been figured out, I even thought of a few while watching. However they decided to stick to the sentimental heroes who were incapable of doing the deed or for a simpler explanation who lacked the required badassery to be a hero. I wish, the people with abilities could be like Danko or Noah Bennet at least. They didn't have as much hesitation. To sum up, the show made me sick, the creators didn't have the ability to forge the gold they had, they just made a bad use of it.
The Hunger Games (2012)
Camera work annoys the eye
I was expecting quite a movie. This whole concept of making a mortal game has been an exciting idea for me. Yet, it looked like a kid movie, in which all the necessary elements for this kind of a concept were eliminated. To me, it is normal to expect seeing some breath-taking gore and profanity, if the movie is grounded on a death game.
Still, the movie was watchable for the plot's sake, nonetheless the camera-work kicked in and ruined the joy. I don't know if they wanted to try out some new style or something but I found it rather annoying. The angle changed so sharply. And the first person takes, which took place quite a few times, almost made me feel dizzy. For instance at the part, where Katniss and the blade girl( i called her that way) were fighting, it was almost impossible to tell who was who.
For the next movies to come, I hope the producers will improves these downsides and will not try to hide the gore. I mean it's like selling drugs as M&Ms. The idea is violent yet it was presented like it were cute.
Bananas (1971)
Too much physical comedy.
I have started a Woody Allen month and this is my third movie after Annie Hall and Anything Else with Annie Hall as may favorite so far. Those other movies had philosophy of their own with great dialogs and very sophisticated humorous lines. But on this one Woody Allen just falls, acts clumsily etc.which I don't really appreciate for a comedy.Sure the movie as a whole very clever one with its topic and countless needles on the events of its time. Moreover the absurdity of the movie is incredible, the beginning and the ending sequences just blew my head, I just can't imagine the reaction this picture got in 70s.All in all this is not the best comedy ever but it is sure another piece of art from Woody Allen.
The Golden Compass (2007)
Fascinating effects and credible fantasy
I haven't read the books and am not much of a fantasy fan. However this movie is very powerful in creating a fantasy world. It entangles you right in. visual effects are glamorous and they clearly indicate the movie is a well studied and high-cost one. Chacters are successfully casted not to mention Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig(nonetheless it was a little sad to see Nicole Kidman as some sort of a villianess-- she pulled it off too) The scenes and locations are well-picked/created, which allows the fantastic world to be credible and absorbing. It's so frustrating there's no sequel to fulfill the plot.Because the theme and the plot are gold mines. I could watch 5-6 more movies of this one...
Horsemen (2009)
yes it's clichéd but no it's not that terrible
****Tiny spoilers***** I am really fond of Christian myths. This movie gives me exactly what i want in terms of the re-characterization and adapting of such myths to modern life. It has a great perspective in that. Yet it lacks the creativity and the adequate amount of violence as well as the depth of the plot. I agree with the reviews that it is predictable though I think being predictable is not a downside for this movie as it shows that the character cant even see the obvious truth while we watchers can, which I think is a good description of the character. In conclusion this is not a bad movie at all if you. too. like myths and don't care about a great twist.
