Just watched Paul Ragsdale and Angelica De Alba's latest movie MURDERCISE and we absolutely loved it. As longtime fans of Paul and Angie's movies, we've seen the progression of their work from Cinco de Mayo through Streets of Vengeance and Slashlorette Party. With every project they refine their art and the movies just keep getting better and better.
Murdercise is a call back to 80s horror movies like Death Spa and Killer Workout, and Paul and Angie absolutely nailed the 80s aesthetic. Having lived through the 80s myself, I can attest the score, costumes and sets are perfect. If you're a fan of 80s horror, you're going to love this movie.
Murdercise has incredible production value for a crowdfunded indie horror. It looks and sounds great, with a fantastic soundtrack and quality sound mixing. Two things can quickly kill a low budget movie, poor lighting and bad audio. Murdercise shines in both areas, it's well lit and it sounds great.
The script is another way in which Murdercise shines. Many indie horror movies have awesome practical effects and cool kills, but weak dialogue. The dialogue in Murdercise is smart and funny. Indie darling Kansas Bowling's (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Psycho Ape) character has some hilarious dialogue and Kansas plays the part perfectly. I laughed out loud at several of her lines. She is GREAT in this movie. Jessa Daisy, Drew Marvick and Nina Lanee Kent are also fantastic in their roles. Jessa has a scene that had us in tears from laughing. The entire movie is really well cast and well acted, Paul and Angie really know how to get the best out of their actors and the result is a quality production. Oh and I would be remiss if I didn't mention that most of the cast of Murdercise look like they're straight out of a modeling agency.
Clocking in at just under 90 minutes, Murdercise is well paced and never drags, it's an easy fun watch. It took us longer than 90 minutes to watch it, however, because some of the scenes were so funny we kept rewinding and watching again. Congrats to everyone involved, this is a movie people are really going to enjoy.

If you're a fan of SOV horror movies, you're going to love Bathtub Shark Attack. This no-budget gore fest is HILARIOUS and features indie film darling Lynn Lowry from The Crazies and Cat People, who adds a touch of class to the project.
The stars of the movie are Ben Deitels and Ruby Craft. Their lack of chemistry is palpable, awkward, and laugh out loud funny. Madeline Deering, who wrote the script (and directed the movie), has a wicked sense of humour, and Deitels and Craft are perfectly cast.
Famous actor Tom Gross makes an appearance, as does his brother Tim. You'll also see indie staple Drew Marvick, and Keith Monahan reprises his role of Timmy from Spirit Animal, n'at. Special shoutout to indie legend Brutus the Shark!

Fun indie werewolf movie that punches above its weight

I love werewolf movies. An American Werewolf in London, The Howling. Dog Soldiers, Wolf Cop, and Ginger Snaps are some of my favorite werewolf movies. So I have been anxious to see how a low budget indie werewolf movie like Wolf Hollow would hold up to the greats. I'm happy to say Wolf Hollow is a worthy addition to the genre. Despite its small budget, the werewolves and practical effects look great. Well written and well acted, it's a compelling story that moves at a quick pace. Kudos to director Mark Cantu, who does a lot with a little and clearly knows how to get the best out of his actors.
Speaking of the actors, lots of familiar faces in this one, including Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Lynn Lowry (The Crazies, Shivers), Hannah Fierman (V/H/S), and Angel Bradford, who is in practically every indie horror movie these days.

Fun Addition to this Cult Indie Franchise

Producer David Sterling is back with another addition to his cult franchise Camp Blood. Camp Blood 666 Part 2: Exorcism of the Clown is a worthy sequel to the original, and a fun addition to the Camp Blood universe. Director Will Collazo Jr. And writer Julie Anne Prescott did a great job of capturing the spirit of the previous Camp Blood movies.
Lots of kills in this installment, with a fun mix of practical and VFX effects. Marvin Maddicks Jr. Did an excellent job scoring the movie, he sets the tone perfectly. There are too many great performances to mention them all by name here, but I was happy to see indie stalwarts Tim Hatch and Jamie Morgan, as well as up and comers David Perry and Heather Harlow, who are quickly becoming indie horror staples, in significant roles. I also loved seeing Clint Beaver in his recurring role as a newscaster. If an indie movie has a newscaster and it's not Clint Beaver, what are they even doing? If you're a fan of indie horror, you're going to see a lot of familiar faces in Camp Blood 666 Part 2.
Clocking in at a brisk 71 minute runtime, the movie doesn't drag. It's well paced and the perfect length for an indie horror. You won't be looking at your watch during this one.

Just watched "Something Walks in the Woods", an indie horror found footage mockumentary. This is a solid effort by William Howard, it's a mostly one man show that succeeds in setting a creepy tone as Howard spends a night in the woods in the hopes of catching a glimpse of a local ghost legend. Fans of Blair Witch style fan footage movies will appreciate this one, it'll definitely make you think twice the next time you plan on camping in a tent. Now I really can't wait to see Howard's next project, The Great Dismal, a Bigfoot indie horror movie. If you're into ghosts, cryptids, and other similar legends, Howard is your man! I'll be watching for his future projects with interest.
Doomsday Stories

Fun Virus Anthology! Perfect for a post COVID audience.

Just watched Phil Herman's Doomsday Stories. Don't be alarmed by the 2 hour runtime, it's an anthology with several short stories, so the runtime is appropriate and the pacing is brisk. The stories are all a reasonable length. I won't get into spoilers but Phil Herman directs and stars in the wraparound wherein he tells stories of survivors of the "Meanies" virus. The shorts are all well done and entertaining, but my personal favorites are "A Broken Promise" by Derek Braasch, "187 Times" by Joel D Wynkoop, and Herman's wraparound story. "187 Times" is a time travel short and I really enjoyed it.
The other stories are "Bomb Threats" and "Forever Man". I especially enjoyed the zombie makeup, and the practical as well as VFX effects in Forever Man. It's a lot of fun.
The nice thing about anthologies is there is something for everyone and while I'm sure you'll have your favorites, these are all solid shorts. Check out Doomsday Stories, the stories are especially relevant in the post pandemic world we're living in.
Special shout out to The Donner Party who perform the opening and closing songs to the movie. Great stuff! I'll definitely be listening to more of them in the future!

Craving

A successful slow burn, the payoff is well worth the wait!

I can't review a slow burn movie without invoking Jaws, because while I'm not usually a fan of slow burn movies, I do appreciate them when they're well done, and Jaws is one of my favorite horror movies. Low budget indie slow burns are usually a mess, they don't typically have the quality of acting, writing, or pacing to pull it off. Craving, however, is a slow burn success. While most successful low budget horror movies lean heavily on high kill counts and constant violence to keep the viewers interested, Craving is very character driven, and the director J. Horton, and the actors are skilled enough to pull it off. Horton's effective use of flashbacks aid in the storytelling and character development. I never found the time long, I wasn't looking at my watch, Craving is well paced and clocking it at just under 90 minutes, it's the perfect length for what it is.
Once the shark is finally revealed, so to speak, the results are fantastic. Robert Bravo is an SFX master, and the practical effects in Craving are top notch. The creature in Craving looks great, and the carnage, when it finally comes, entirely justifies the wait. Lovers of violence and gore will leave feeling satisfied. No spoilers, but one kill in particular is going to have audiences talking!

Valentine Bluffs

Much needed and worthy sequel to a horror classic!

Valentine Bluffs is one of the best low budget indie films I've ever watched, and I watch a lot of indie horror films. I'm a big fan of the original My Bloody Valentine movie, and this fan film sequel is very true to the original. Filmed in an actual mine, the sets and locations look fantastic! Thomas Smith and Chuck Ryan did a lot with a little here, the production value of this movie is much higher than you would expect with their budget. The movie has an excellent score, and the audio mixing is perfect. Poor audio is one of my largest and most common complaints about indie films, but that is not at all an issue in Valentine Bluffs. The movie also has an excellent soundtrack. Another pet peeve I have is when movies are so dark you can't make out what is happening, which you would almost expect in a low budget movie that takes place in a mine. But again, this is not an issue with Valentine Bluffs. The lighting is excellent. The action scenes in the mine, which are very well done, are perfectly lit, you can completely see what is happening.
Valentines Bluff is polished enough that at times you'll forget you're watching a fan film. It doesn't have a lot of needless filler dialogue that plagues many indie movies, and the acting is all above par. The movie is well paced, I never found it lagged and I was surprised how quickly the time passed.
The practical effects are fantastic, the props and special effects look great, just an outstanding job. The kills looks really good! The miner costume is awesome. Chuck Ryan does a fantastic job as the miner.
Story wise this movie feels much like the original. The way the original ended, I always wish they had made a sequel. Valentine Bluffs is a near perfect sequel. Again, at times it's hard to believe it's a fan film.
Oh, I was surprised to see Lloyd Kaufman as the mayor. He was hilarious! And it wasn't just a cameo, he has a fairly significant role. I have to say, this movie rarely feels like a crowdfunded indie project. It has a larger budget feel.
If you're a fan of My Bloody Valentine, I really recommend checking out Valentine Bluffs, I think you'll really enjoy it. It's definitely a must watch for us every Valentine's Day, though I'm sure we'll watch it again long before that.

The practical effects are fantastic, the props and special effects look great, just an outstanding job. The kills looks really good! The miner costume is awesome. Chuck Ryan does a fantastic job as the miner.
Story wise this movie feels much like the original. The way the original ended, I always wish they had made a sequel. Valentine Bluffs is a near perfect sequel. Again, at times it's hard to believe it's a fan film.
Oh, I was surprised to see Lloyd Kaufman as the mayor. He was hilarious! And it wasn't just a cameo, he has a fairly significant role. I have to say, this movie rarely feels like a crowdfunded indie project. It has a larger budget feel.
If you're a fan of My Bloody Valentine, I really recommend checking out Valentine Bluffs, I think you'll really enjoy it. It's definitely a must watch for us every Valentine's Day, though I'm sure we'll watch it again long before that.
Hellvira on the Run

Morgan Welborn has created a fantastic character in Hellvira, and Sushii Xhyvette Holder does an incredible job bringing Hellvira to life. Sushii plays the part perfectly and I wouldn't be surprised if Welborn created the character with her in mind. Michael McGlynn is a delight, as always. I think McGlynn is one of the funniest actors on the indie horror scene right now. He's as hilarious in Hellvira as he was as Roger in Bloody Summer Camp. Seeing him choking up on the bat like Shelley Duvall in The Shining had me in stitches.
Welborn does a lot with a little here, Hellvira on the Run is way more polished and has higher production value than you would expect from a micro budget indie short. It looks great, the colours pop, throw in a couple of cameos and my only complaint would be this short is, well, short, lol. Hellvira definitely deserves the feature film treatment and I can't wait to see what Welborn and Sushii do with the character in the future.

Amber Road

William McNamara and Janet Wang shine in this low budget horror!

Amber Road has a fantastic cast, with some big name talent like Hollywood legend Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down), and Robert LaSardo (Death Race, CSI Miami) in addition to a talented group of actors you'll recognize if you follow the indie scene. I recently saw Janet Wang in Bermuda Island, but this is the first time I've seen her in a lead role. Get used to hearing her name! Wang and McNamara really shine in their roles as a married couple imprisoned by a killer. Rachel Riley is also great in her role, but I hesitate to single anyone out because the acting in general is great. Director B. Luciano Barsuglia clearly knows how to get the best out of his cast.
Amber Road is NOT for the squeamish. The torture scenes are well done and believable, and made me squirm more than once. Great job by the SFX crew.

Above Average Indie Thriller

Several of the negative reviewers claim to watch a lot of indie horror movies, but if that was true they'd acknowledge this movie is BETTER than most low budget indie efforts. I watch A LOT of indie horror movies on Tubi and this one is more polished and well acted than most of them. Part horror, part mystery, director Harley Wallen has put together a well paced thriller. With solid performances by Angelina Danielle Cama and Anna Lambeth, this movie is more character driven than your average horror slasher. The special effects look good, and the story by Bret Miller will keep you guessing. If you like low budget horror, this movie is definitely worth a watch.

Fans of Lost are going to love this one! An action adventure movie that is also a horror mystery with a twist. Fantastic screenplay by Robert Thompson, based on a story by Michael and Sonny Mahal, that starts off as a classic deserted island adventure but quickly becomes so much more. Filmed in Puerto Rico and in beautiful Vieques, an island East of Puerto Rico, cinematographer Michael Su made the most of the tropical surroundings, this is a gorgeous movie that really takes advantage of the location.
With appearances by Noel Gugliemi (Training Day, The Fast and the Furious) and Hollywood legend Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, and one of my favorite movies, Black Hawk Down), this movie is well acted throughout. John Wells and Sarah French, from previous Mahal Empire movies, shine in their roles. In fact you'll see many familiar faces from earlier Mahal movies, and as always the acting is solid and believable.

Excellent Low Budget Indie Western Horror

I can unequivocally say Night of the Tommyknockers is Mahal Empire's greatest movie to date. I say that as someone who really enjoyed their previous outings, including Party Bus to Hell, Attack of the Unknown, Death Count, and Bridge of the Doomed.
There is a real dearth of Western-Horror movies but Night of the Tommyknockers is a quality addition to the genre. It has a real western feel, but it doesn't skimp on the horror. Fans of the genre will be very pleased with the result.
Robert LaSardo (CSI Miami) and Richard Grieco (21 Jump Street) put in outstanding performances as outlaw bank robbers while Hollywood legend Tom Sizemore (Blackhawk Down, Heat, Natural Born Killers) shines as the local lawman. Shout out to Indie Horror staple Shawn C Phillips for his great performance in Tommyknockers. Always love seeing Shawn show up when we're watching a movie.

Fun Found Footage Fare

Just watched Jake Robinson's found footage movie The Wendigo. Right off the hop I'm inclined to like this movie because I'm a fan of found footage movies, and with it's 68 minute runtime it's exactly what I'm looking for in an a low budget indie film.
The opening 10 minutes are the livestream format as seen in the recent Shudder hit, Deadstream. The "live" comments during the stream are both hilarious and realistic. Jake used actual Twitch streamers to do the comments and the results are pure authenticity and comedy gold. I'll have to watch those 10 minutes again just to read all the comments.
The rest of the movie is found footage mockumentary format which I'm also a fan of. It's a slow burn, not usually my thing because it's hard to pull of successfully, but Jake manages to do it. The lean runtime helps, there is no fat on this movie, it moves at a brisk pace and it's never boring. Once the action does start, it's frantic and believable. Jamie and Clint Apple did a great job on the SFX makeup.
The movie is well acted, a very solid cast, no weak links. Shoutout to Rudy Ledbetter and Shawn Thompson on their reaction videos, and I thought Matthias Margraves and Tyler Gene both did outstanding jobs. But again, I hesitate to single anybody out because they all did an amazing job. The characters, mostly insufferable youtube streamers, are portrayed very believably. You will not like these characters. Unlikable characters in horror movies are my personal favorite because it's more satisfying when they die.
An overall solid effort that you should check out when it's released if you're a fan of the found footage genre.
