Mad God (2021)
A macabre and beautiful experience.
No, there isn't a fully fleshed out plot. No, it is not solely stop-motion (stop with the silly gate-keeping!) but Mad God provides an uncomfortably beautiful look at a decaying world. Reading along with a synopsis can help those that need structure, but enjoying the strange world building and freakish characters is more than enough.
Errementari (2017)
Watch with subtitles
The dub doesn't do it justice. Unique story - more of a thriller than a horror, with some comedy thrown in. I won't spoil anything but the ending is satisfying and closed. No nonsense about leaving things hanging for a sequel or open for interpretation.
Why Didn't They Ask Evans? (2022)
Wonderful adaptation
You can't please everyone. And it's even harder to please die-hard Christie fans.
A visually pleasing and well paced adaption with likeable characters. A lot of good jokes thrown in too which was refreshing. Poulter and Boynton were a pleasure to watch.
Greenland (2020)
Privileged family yells their way to safety while constantly being rewarded.
This whole movie has more plot holes than can be listed but essentially falls apart over time as an entitled family forces you to hate them as they strangely get exceptional treatment from everyone who is in the same horrible situation. All attempts to humanize them seem contrived as you realize how selfish they are.
They bully, yell and whine their way into everyone's hearts and transportation in an amazing display of privilege while leaving bodies in their wake. You'll have fun cheering for their demise but spoiler: they unfortunately survive.
Five stars for some fun but repetitive visuals.
The Biggest Little Farm (2018)
Fantasy, not documentary.
Overproduced and fake. A pretend 'documentary' that follows a delusional couple (or at least they portray themselves as such) that is great of producing film but has little grasp on reality. Pretend sentimentality and sense of "meaning".
High Score (2020)
Good for the casual video game fan. Some hardcore gamers and haters may be triggered.
Watch out! A trans woman is on the screen for a bit! Also, 10 whole minutes are dedicated to a gay video game! That garners this 1-3 stars according to most reviews here...
Why not try watching the first episode and see if its the right fit for you? Its a very good overview (not in depth) and entertaining look at the video game world from the 70s through to the 90s. Most people will enjoy it. Some easily miffed people will get their undies in a knot.
Canada's Drag Race (2020)
Ignore the haters
Sure, the judges are not stellar , but the talent from the queens make up for it. With a tighter 1 hour show there is less fluff and things get down to business. The amount of salty reviews dismissing the show because Ru isn't in it or they don't like the judges is doing a great disservice to these amazing Canadian drag queens. They'll entertain you non-stop. The show is a refreshing departure from the main series.
Baroness Von Sketch Show (2016)
Ignore the 1 star reviews - so much fun!
For some reason most of the one star reviews here mention gender. How telling... Really? This deserves one star? Not 8? Not 5? But 1? Ignore the haters. This is a simple, lower budget but fun, Canadian show that women will probably like more than men. Nothing wrong with that. Like what you like. Don't go out of your way to hate on what you don't. Love seeing parts of Toronto in this. Can't wait for the next season.
Darwin (2011)
Artistically shot look at a small town of... characters...
A great look at a few of the 35 people who live in Darwin, California, a former mining town. Those who decided to stay behind when the silver mine closed down (and even stranger - those that decided to move there afterwards) are profiled in a way that is empathetic to them and their situation but at the same time allows for humorous circumstances. The barren landscape is used in many scenes to contrast the dilapidated town to great artistic effect and is a constant reminder to how remote and removed these people are from the rest of the world. The story of Darwin itself, along with the lives of the people living there currently are woven together in a way that presents the documentary as a drama filled soap opera. The best part of it all though is that it is real.
