Bridgerton (2020)
I have not read the books
A lot of times, when a book or series is converted to visual media, the reader that is fond of the book(s) is disappointed with the result. I've seen reviews like that and believe it is usually to be expected.
However, as someone who has Not read the books, I can say that I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and am eagerly awaiting another season (or 10).
This Netflix series is a joyous presentation of a Romance Novel come to life. The re-imagining of Georgian / Regency Society as integrated is wonderful to see - I especially love Queen Charlotte. Yes, there are historical liberties being taken, but so what? It's not a History Documentary, it's a fun time watching silly romance and drama. This is for fun, not edification. So, if you're in the mood to watch some deliciously spicy romance (not PG-13) and wonderfully served up Scandal Broth (brought to you by the creator of Scandal... yay!), this is the show for you!
I must say, the casting on this is wonderful. Every player is wonderfully cast for their role, and I haven't seen a more beautiful assembly of acting talent in years - if ever. Every single person is, at the very least, interesting in some way, or downright beautiful. I will probably watch this many times while waiting for the next episodes.
The King (2019)
Well done piece of crap
Henry V was an interesting enough person in real history that creating an embellished and incredibly inaccurate piece of film is not only unnecessary, but insulting. They couldn't even bother to get basic history even marginally correct - oh, yes, Henry V was son of Henry IV, but that's as close to accurate as this gets.
The ONLY reason it got any stars from me is because the fight scene with Percy was very well done, though, again, not at all true to the history.
I don't blame the actors - they were actually quite good. I do blame the WRITERS and PRODUCERS for creating a completely false narrative for one of the greatest military minds of the early 15th century.
Please, if you're going to create a historically-based work, try to get the history at least somewhat correct. Embellishment is one thing, but rewriting the facts is dishonerable, at best. Even just getting the dates of death right - or close - would be a huge improvement for this work, much less the circumstances of the deaths.
Shame on Plan B for putting this out like this.
Disjointed (2017)
Trying too hard
Oh so many things are wrong with this. The "laugh track" is distractingly overused (actually, using it at all could qualify, but this is excessive). The stereotyping is nauseatingly overdone. Another reviewer said that this show would be entertaining to 50ish housewives, and that they were the likely target audience. I'm 48 and, no, this isn't entertaining. Frankly, this show is trying so hard to be funny that I have to wonder if it really isn't making fun of marijuana all around - the users, the retailers, the whole industry. Is the intent to mock marijuana so much that people turn away from using it for fear of being associated with such stereotypes? If so, they are going to backfire horribly. This extremely over-exaggerated portrayal is actually disturbing. Such a shame. I have always enjoyed Kathy Bates' performances, but this is just too contrived to actually be funny.
Act of God (2009)
Misleading tag-line
I was interested in seeing this movie because of the tag-line "A look at the metaphysical effects of being struck by lightning." This movie has absolutely NOTHING to do with scientifically documenting claims of metaphysical events as regards lightning strikes. Yes, there are people who relate a spiritual experience as a result of being hit by lightening, but it's purely their memory and interpretation. When they hooked the one guy up to the EEG, I thought for a moment they were going to actually show how his brain wave pattern has been changed. Nope. They just showed the difference between doing a rehearsed activity and a creative one. The only reason the movie got even a two from me was for the excellent presentation of the devastation and the human element of lightning strikes. The guy with the experimental guitar stuff pretty much single-handedly turned me off of this movie.
Very disappointing, but then again, I tend to prefer a scientific approach to documentaries.
