Zorro (2024)
The return of zorro... Bravo.
Having been a fan of Zorro since the 70s (watching the 1950s tv show in black and white), following the characters journey through Hollywood, through the Antonio Banderas era, through the cartoons, and now onto Amazon... I can say this is actually good depiction of Zorro as a character. Admittedly there was some aspects that did not make sense (multiple Zorros) however, these aspects mirrored situations in the old TV series, so it was acceptable although with a spin.
The overall storyline worked well, the character journey arc flowed with ease, this was easy to accept, given the quality of the acting and the interplay between secondary narratives and the main story of Zorro becoming Zorro.
In some areas, this interpretation provides background updates on the origin of Zorro and what inspires him in ways the TV program hadn't done. Despite the subtle changes, this is still a very good interpretation of Zorro and I for one welcome a second series if it is picked up for additional episodes...
Well done, whoever scripted this, whoever directed it and the actors involved. Many Zorro fans will be very happy to watch this interpretation of a beloved character.
They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
Just... Wow!! Some might not understand. But WOW!!.
Wow!!! This ride started out confusing and disjointed, but once I realised the undertone and narrative I had to start over again.
They cloned Tyrone leans heavily into several tropes and myths within the black community to relay a story about drugs in the community, how the community is/could be controlled, the roles of specific characters within the community, how a community can oppress itself and more.
The depiction of chicken and perm as negative and influential but well embraced drugs... wow!?! Bravo! Applause applause applause.
With insight into the culture, it's struggles and considerations to external influences, you can see how They Called Tyrone holds a mirror up to society, pokes fun at it while simultaneously spotlighting several issues.
Bruh (2019)
Diamond in the very rough
Bruh has always been a bit rough in terms of storyline, acting and consistency of actors. It often feels like the actors are going off script, exaggerate their lines and over act the scenarios they are acting in.
Season three, saw the introduction of two new characters, one male (a bruh), and one female which, although adding to the storylines, created even more weird scenarios and the increase of even more poor acting.
There is definitely something here to work with, the actors just need more directing, maybe a little more talent, and storylines that are more consistent or joint together.
On occasion, the actors and/or storylines are just plain annoying due to the overacting or daft scenarios. There are situations where people intervene in peoples lives in ways that would never happen in reality, and are just accepted as part of the dialogue or narrative.
Marlon Wayans: God Loves Me (2023)
All about who.....?
This was disappointing... the entire 59 min special is about one event, one issue, one moment that is NOT about Marlon.
After 20 minutes of the same joke, it felt about time to move onto a second topic, another event, another laughable moment. But, like farmer Jack with Daisy his prized cow, the joke is milked until every last drop is out. Even though you might've been tired of milk (the joke) after 20 minutes, here comes some more.
Admittedly, there are some laughable moments. A few funny events/scenarios, a few expressions that make the special watchable. But, it needs more variety!
References to legacy Waynes shows are always welcomed, but at moments it felt like the references were aimed at creating a platform for guaranteed applause, adulation or appreciation.
Marlon is a great comedian, great expressionist, great at generating moments to smile and reflect, but... how shine was a little low here, and hidden behind stories of someone else's trauma. But...... have a look and decide for yourself.
House Party (2023)
Terrible... like, really terrible
As remakes or tributes go, this missed so many marks. It had so much promise (the concept and original set a high expectation standard). But there were too many cringe worth moments to mention... the anticipated dance, the mock of Full Force, the high DJ, the random fight scene!? It just started off the mark and continued down that track for the entire film. Cameos we're cool, but seemed out of place in such a lacklustre movie.
Some elements were ok, but the attempt to almost one up the original didn't set this film apart or act as a
Fitting tribute.
Long story short.... Some things should be left well enough alone, and respected for what it is/was.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
What was the purpose/story??
Terrible movie.. have to wonder if this was created as a springboard for Chloe's career or feminism in general!!! The overbearing masculinity Vs the heroine... then we have a Grem Vs a child!? Like.... WHY?? What was the point.
Loves Spell (2020)
Homegrown urban romance/comedy at its finest.
Have to applause the writing and directing of this Brit movie. I didn't know what to expect, but the story, the comedic element (expected from Kane Brown, very entertaining comedian) and subtle suprises... very entertaining outing for Fredi Nwaka.
The loner in search for love is a story we've seen many times, but the character set up, addition of frequently seen London characters, the surprising room mate, over excited therapist and more make this a film that was enjoyable and watchable a few more times.
There aren't many self produced, written, directed movies on the Uk urban entertainment scene, and to place all of that on Fredi's shoulders, PLUS a supporting role throughout.... Applause. I look forward to watching more from Fredi and seeing his stable of entertaining movies hit the screened.
For an entertaining home grown and produced movie...
A Quiet Place (2018)
Intense, interesting, imaginative
Despite a few plot holes, A Quiet Place is a thriller driven almost entirely by the talent of its cast. The survival of the Camilo, coupled with their fear and cautious approach to survival weaves an imaginative story of resilience. Although the decision to keep humanity alive by having a kid might be missed by some, the reasoning for wider family focused decision making seems sound and well meaning. An altogether enjoyable movie, also driven by the viewers "those bloody kids" moments that have you shaking a fist at the screen on many occasions (LOL)..... good movie, great watch.
