The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
why would you care for a reasonable plot, you fools?
The plot is a total nonsense from the beginning to the end. They don't even try to make it believable. I know it's a super hero movie, we're not in the real world, but still. I felt this movie was an insult to the public. It's like saying you don't understand anything of what is happening in the world around you, why would you care to understand what is going on in the movie? We end up with a very childish plot where whatever you want to happen just happens with magic. A nuclear reactor turned into a nuclear bomb with a screwdriver in 2 minutes in a garage, a broken spine healed with a rope and 3 push ups, it's all like this. Just boring and lazy. Even the fights are lame. Bane and Batman are supposed to be the 2 best fighters in the world but they fight like a couple of drunk cowboys. Jackie Chan would kick their butt in no time. Can't believe it's rated 8.7 today.
Gomez & Tavarès (2003)
one of the best french action comedy
Before being an action movie, this is a comedy. The cynical kind. Maybe not for everyone. And like any comedy, it HAS to be seen in original version. So, if you don't understand french, just don't watch it. Action and comedy are definitely not genres that french are good at, but this one is really good. A rare piece then. Titoff and Jean Yann are especially good in their character. Another reviewer said Titoff was "the best cop" in Marseille. Really he didn't understand anything of the movie. Titoff is on the contrary a total loser cop and really nailed it. Other actors are not doing as good a job, but still correct. Good humour, good action, good picture, smart ending.
À bout de souffle (1960)
a fabulous subtle ...something
I am not an expert in movie techniques or cinema history, I couldn't even give a definition of new wave. I am not even a big fan of Godard, except for "a bout de soufflz". This movie deserves to be in the top 10. But if you look at ratings, it's basically either 10 or 1. I am not going to describe why this movie is so good, I wouldn't be able to anyway. But I think the effect of it lies in Michel's character (kind of crazy, cynical, with an incredible distant and happy attitude and self confidence that gives him some particular charm. Belmondo's performance to act this especially complex and subtle character is outstanding), and the overall realization that gets you like some abstract paintings sometimes do. Surely lots of people wrote tons of technical stuffs to explain all this. Now why so many of so-called movie enthusiast in the IMDb hated it? I understood from reading the reviews that many of them are from students who "had" to watch it for their class. I guess it's not the best way to appreciate it. As there is no way anyone could appreciate the Mona Lisa in the Louvre museum, looking at it at 10 m in a crowd. A word that comes a lot is "boring". I guess some people don't see in movies anything else than a technique used as a support for a storyline. It's like saying food is just fuel to walk. I guess they're the same who put all these blockbusters in the top 250. Not that I don't like Hollywood big productions but they don't go at all beyond entertainment, which is good but not enough. And finally, there might be some cultural misunderstanding. A reviewer wrote that he hated Michel because he kept stealing cars...I was just puzzled by such stupidity. This is definitely not a movie to be watched if you have been formatted by TV and Hollywood blockbusters since you were born, like apparently a growing majority of IMDb members.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
good escape movie, nothing more
I don't get how this movie could be the best rated in the IMDb. Sure it's good, maybe great, but come on, there are so many movies more meaningful, more groundbreaking, more shaking... That's a clever story with an amazing end. Actually, it's probably one of the happiest movie end. Maybe that's why people like it so much. Sure there is some message about justice, perseverance and courage, but all in all very classic and easy, not to say shallow. So I rated it 7 as an efficient entertaining movie. Nothing really special in the photography, nor in the acting, nor in the staging, nor politically. No complexity in the feelings nor in the characters. Really, it does deserve good critics, but certainly not being ranked best movie ever. I suppose the shawshank fanatics would also give the litterature nobel prize to Stephen King?
