Blown Away (2019)
Gender politics?
I love the skill that the contestants put into their work. I wanted to learn how glass blowing worked simply for fun. The disappointing part for me was the winner of the series (Deborah?). Two reasons for disappointment;
1. She put down other artists work. That is unforgivable in this setting.
2. She wanted a woman to win. She said so herself.
2. She won a robotic theme round by something about men giving birth. No robot theme there but she won. How was she not eliminated for not following the theme?
She often made comments about gender and the challenges of being a woman. She made comments to gender bending, not identifying with male or female and other hot topics. These topics should be discussed for sure, but must not be part of a skill showing program. I have a feeling that she won due to politics. I can't continue to watch this show.
I understand that minorities might feel unwelcome in a setting dominated by another group. I like to see such groups be more inclusive. It's great to see a greater range of perspectives. But I can't shake this feeling that she won not for her skill (which I thought for sure she was skillful), but because she was a woman vocal to challenge men's role in glass blowing.
The Sunchaser (1996)
Say it ain't so Woody!
Not that I'm a great fan of Woody, however I do enjoy his movies. BUT this movie was sad, Star Trek convention sort of sad. What an unrealistic last half of the film. An additional 'sadline' was all with the "white jokes" references while they were on the reservation. Yeah yeah, white people suck, heard it before, will hear it again. The stereotypical image of the Navajo riding horses (bareback) with the magical lake and the wise old medicine man again shone in this movie as in all North American native related movies. Can the Navajo people really digest this crap? If one wants to see a great movie regarding the native peoples it's BLACK ROBE (1991).
