The Troop (2009)
Creative and Fun Silliness (Not Hyper-Perky)
One of the most creative children's sitcom adventure programs I've ever seen! No superheroes, just an odd group of kids with little in common except friendship and caring for creatures & nature.
Completely without the typical super-happy, hyper-perky schtick with forced laughs; The Troop didn't pretend to offer quick solutions or fast fixes for anything. The kids explored and tried different options until something worked. The comedy was fun and silly, not fake or at someone's expense. Very different from the children's network shows on many networks.
Of course, creatures and situations were often silly. But the actors themselves were having a good time, and they were good sports about being swallowed or turned into wood, or trying to save their friends from danger or the fear of a mysterious forest.
Gage, the girl, was especially delightful to watch. However, she wasn't a scene stealer.
It has been many years since I saw rerun episodes of The Troop, but I would love to see it again. It was that fun. (11/16/21)
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)
Ah, Cosmos!
I loved the Cosmos of Carl Sagan, and since I watched that first episode I still use the phrase "Billions and billions, as Carl would say." It was my own little tribute.
I am delighted to report that this new Cosmos journey is also wonderful. Literally, full of wonder. It is thought provoking, well scripted, and the graphics are worth every penny. Watching the host, Tyson, is almost as fun as listening to his smooth voice. As with the first series, I am always left exhilarated and wanting more.
Well done, everyone, and here's hoping that it inspires future scientists--and the world--as much as it has inspired me; a science fan.
(I'm not a huge fan of the cartoon drawings, but they work well and serve their purpose, it's really just a matter of preference.)
The Protector: Pilot (2011)
A great police detective with people skills, sort of...
The Protector, starring Ally Walker (Episode 1/ Pilot)
It is great to see the lovely and talented Ally Walker back as a tough, intuitive crime solver. This series has a much lighter tone than "The Profiler" (in 1996), and a better look at the victim's suit than his injuries!
Her performance as the hurried and harried Gloria Shepherd, LAPD homicide detective, is delightful to watch, and the sassy banter with her partner Michelle Dulcett (Tisha Campbell-Martin) kept me smiling through most of the show.
While Gloria's work and family relationships keep her plenty busy, it doesn't take long to realize that her intelligence and determination mixed with a playful sense of confidence will keep the bad guys...and everyone else, on their toes!
