Endangered Species (2021)
Beautiful Kenyan Landscape
The plot of the movie is not worthwhile. The situation is basically plot driven and not very accurate with reality. Kenyan landscape is beautiful and the movie did make us enjoy the idea of being on a safari. I gave the movie two extra starts because of that.
However, there are mechanisms at Kenyan national parks and at the resorts that can prevent such plot driven mishaps and inaccuracies that the movie showed us. Also, it was not clear why the leopard didn't finish killing one of the characters. In reality, all of them would have died 30 minutes into the movie.
Finally, the movie's morality preaching was cheap and from the perspective of a muzungo.
Marlowe (2022)
Best comedy made in 2022
The script is so bad that it turned the movie from a crime noir thriller into a laughable waste of time.
By the end of the movie, I realized that I laughed so much that I was missing the plot, which was convoluted and boring to the core.
This gives God Father, The Departed (which coincidentally is written by the same writer) and Schindler's List a run for their money.
No wonder it was not successful in the box office and had a hug loss.
My own consolation is that the actors, great ones all of them, got something out of this production.
This waste of my time is to be forgotten as soon as possible.
UFO Conspiracies: The Hidden Truth (2020)
No Substance
Written and directed by one guy and narrated by another. No substantial information besides known stories. Nothing new nor intelligent was revealed or discussed.
The narrator only provide assumptions and speaks the language and terminologies of conspiracy theories to lure the audience.
If Aliens do exist, then why are they using flying saucers or arrow shaped space vehicles... and why are all these sightings or experiences mentioned in the movie happening only to US citizens and/or army personnel. If Aliens do exist, why don't they also appear in Indonesia, Congo and Peru?
The movie was a waste of my time.
Smile (2022)
Pure Plagiarism
Shame that this movie plagiarized a better movie from 1998, called Fallen; Directed by Gregory Hoblit, and starring Denzel Washington, Elias Koteas, Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini and John Goodman. What a list of great actors!
Speaking of which, the acting in Fallen was fantastic, and the movie had little to no unnecessary jump scares. While the plot of Fallen was intricate it also referenced religion and the concepts of right and wrong... instead of blaming some curse from Brazil like Smile does.
I was not sure why I should cheer for Smile's protagonist instead of the Brazilian curse. I gave it two stars because one of the jump scares was well placed (she was on her headphones) and the final scene was acceptable. The rest was trash and plagiarized.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Boring
1. I gave the movie an extra star because of all the fuel spent for filming those jets. So that star is mainly for the environment being such a hero.
2. Didn't they steal the plot from Star Wars Episode 4 the New Hope minus Darth Vader. There was the "Use the Force, Luke." part of the script, and even the "enemy" pilots looked like tie fighter pilots. So Top Gun is a tribute to George Lucas.
The Contractor (2022)
A breath of fresh air
An action movie that is a cliché but also not a cliché. I enjoyed it through and through. The acting of both Pine and Foster was admirable The movie had a good intense atmosphere, and the story was very realistic.
The realism of the story reminded me of the author Andy McNab and his novels. I believe this movie carries true to that kind of action thriller story telling.
I gave the move 7 stars, but extra two for the acting and the intensity. It is a must see.
The Northman (2022)
Scenic
The first star is the minimum that we must give, and the second star I gave was for the beautiful sceneries from Island and Ireland. Otherwise, it was a waste of time, so two stars is more than enough... thank you.
Besides, the good acting of Alexander Skarsgård, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy and Ethan Hawke were wasted.
Funny Games (1997)
It is a horror movie
It is one of the best psychological horror movies ever made because it absolutely aims to destroy one's fundamental trust in human beings. I give this movie a 10 because it is a master piece.
All the Old Knives (2022)
Excellent thriller but bad geopolitics backstory
I enjoyed the twists and the intrigue of such a spy story but I was disappointed that once again Hollywood mixes up the geopolitics of the Middle East, and yet again portrays a backstory where Sunni Jehadi Terrorists are funded by Iran.
It would be meant a lot of sense if the infamous phone call to Iran was made to other cities, for example, Edlib (Syria), Mombasa (Kenya), Kismayo (Somalia) or even Doha (Qatar).
I would have give the movie a 7 star but for that bad backstory.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021)
Boring movie but fantastic acting
The movie was so poorly made that it put me to sleep and i had to stop the movie. I tried again a month later to finish it. However, Jessica Chastain's performance makes the movie worth while. Hence i gave it a 5 star.
Mother/Android (2021)
Another Cliche: Terminator meets any zombie movie
I like Chloe Grace Moretz, she is a good actress and her performance, even in this movie, is admirable. But why is the movie such a cliche? Its 2021, and the producers still believed that they can dazzle us with yet another cliche? I gave it a three plus one for young Chloe.
Belfast (2021)
Thank you
I grew up in a civil war, and I related a lot to the experiences of this family. I enjoyed this movie and I appreciated the story. So thank you Kenneth Branagh.
Old (2021)
Comedy
I am not sure if this was a thriller/horror movie, it felt more like a comedy. The acting was mediocre and the plot was not very compelling.
Many good actors were wasted in this, yet again, not very inspiring M. Night Shyamalan movie.
Sound of Metal (2019)
Beautifully made movie
A beautiful movie with a lot of precious moments/scenes.
The Green Knight (2021)
Why?
I wasted my time. I was looking forward for a fantasy adventure, but not something that did not have any idea of what it wants to tell the audience.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Underrated - enjoyable to watch
Entertaining, creative and has interesting twists. Loved how the character was building during the movie. Surely one of the movies that is worth watching in 2021.
The Stoning of Soraya M. (2008)
Could have been a better movie
A mix of good acting (for example of Shohreh Aghdashloo and Navid Negahban) and some terrible acting. The script and conversations sound fake (for Persian speakers) and too much dramatization and unnecessary nauseating music. This story had the potential of being a good movie, instead it turned out to be mediocre.
Cherry (2021)
Great war movie
Tom Holland can act. Russo bothers have brought a war movie with all its consequences into.
Women of Freedom (2016)
Disappointed
I was expecting more in-depth analysis of the criminal behavior of men in the society and the root causes but the movie spend more than half of the 50 min movie interviewing girls that escaped the "honor killings". There could have been more than just focusing on the victimization. That was disappointing.
Iran: Everything Forbidden, Anything Possible (2018)
If you want to learn about Iran, don't watch this movie
A lot of misinformation about Islam, history of Iran, Nuclear Deal, etc. that can easily be double checked with wikipedia. I don't understand why they didn't verify their information first. This is not professional.
Most info about the atrocities of the Iranian regime is true, but one "tourist" with a camera mingling with few middle and upper class Iranian families in Tehran is not representative of the whole nation, and surely very biased. Their work is not considered journalism.
The interviews with the street artists were interesting and I wish there was more of that type of exposure than hair salons or lingerie fashion.
Boss Level (2020)
One of the handful entertaining movies of 2020
This movie was surprisingly entertaining and funny, and also has no shame in referring to Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow, as a student would do to his or her teacher, but with a delightful twist.
Vremya pervykh (2017)
Worth watching because of the historic significance
I personally met Major General Alexey Leonov in Beirut (Lebanon) at a seminar on the 14 of February 2006, and I managed to take a selfie with him. He told us the story of his spacewalking and how he reported the success to his supervisors. Perhaps not the best movie out there, but it is worth watching because of the fascinating story and the historic significance. I really enjoyed watching it.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
A must see.
The story is very entertaining, makes you laugh and cry while Ethan Hawke's performance grips you through and through. And the topic is as relevant now as it was in 1859. A MUST SEE.
Busanhaeng 2: Bando (2020)
Mad Max meets Zombieland
Entertaining for a zombie movie with some interesting characters and twists.
Unhinged (2020)
Criticism
I liked the movie, it was suspenseful and partially unpredictable (apart from the obvious use of the scissors). But the ending, where she choses not to honk, is not a mature conclusion to this movie: a bit on the nose and anticlimactic (teaching us to be polite!!). Wouldn't it have been better if we didn't see her finding the scissors in the first place? Or the movie ends simply with the death of the villain?
