Music is Life!!
14 April 2024
This film was so well pieced together from start to finish. From the tiny details like the timeless timepiece on her wrist to the editing with the memory flashes. The acting was so much more realistic than typical movies these days. The dialogue felt natural and not forced or scripted. And the storytelling itself was just excellent! I was so impressed with this film. I was in a similar scenario as her and I have certainly been transported by music when it comes to certain songs tied to certain memories. For me, this film was like a daydream fantasy of mine that I'd give anything to be able to experience in real life. Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. 10/10.

Constellation (2024)
Finally!!
9 April 2024
I have been waiting for a sci-fi this well-written and thought-provoking. I feel like anyone who is confused simply isn't into sci-fi (or quantum physics, for that matter). It reminds me of Fringe in a lot of ways, Jacob's Ladder, in others. The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of marketing/buzz surrounding this amazing series. I had never heard of it when I just saw it while randomly searching in the sci-fi category on Apple TV+. I really hope we'll get a second season, because this is exactly what I've needed. Amazing acting, writing, direction, etc. 10/10 Highly recommended if you love multiverse or many worlds theories. Just fantastic.

Boring & Pointless
20 March 2024
This was incredibly boring. Every scene moved so slowly, I found myself skipping ahead frequently just to get past the artsy slow zooms, etc. I thought the young husband gave the best, most believable performance. Everyone else felt like they were acting. And the ending felt like a non-ending. The only thing that made this film dramatic was the musical score.

I was disappointed in Natalie Portman's performance. I'd hoped that she would've done a better job of mimicking. Julianne Moore. And I didn't even notice Julianne's lisp until much later in the film. Either way, they just didn't get lost in their characters enough to make the film worthwhile.

I do not recommend this film unless you want to be underwhelmed with something slow paced in the background as you do other things.

Black Mirror: Demon 79 (2023)
Season 6, Episode 5
Not Black Mirror
17 June 2023
Black Mirror has always been a startling commentary on technology. This season has been drifting away from that and bordering on some kind of horror/fantasy. Why can't the writers pause and remember that San Junipero was their best episode and realize that we don't need to feel scared, we need to be mesmerized and surprised by new concepts surrounding technological advancements. And if those concepts happen to excite us or just freak us out, cool. But the goal doesn't need to simply be to freak us out. Loch Henry & Mazey Day had the same problem. While these kinds of episodes are entertaining on their own, they aren't Black Mirror.

Siren (I) (2016)
Low Budget Brilliance
27 June 2021
The acting is so awful and the quality is junk, in general, until you finally get to the Siren. Then, it becomes the greatest "bad movie" of all time! We were laughing so hard (and yelling) at the sheer hilarity of it. It's a love story for the ages. Lol.

Manifest (2018–2023)
I was kinda into it before the awful FX started
19 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The moment Zeke and Michaela had the calling under the fake cartoon starry sky near the end of Season 1, I knew the show was going downhill. And then the even more horribly created CGI black wolf. I just couldn't take the show seriously anymore. It was already getting silly and the FX just pushed it all the way over the edge. A smarter storyline with the Major would've been this: The pilot and the shared consciousness woman flew into the black lightning and instead of going forward in time, they went back. She becomes the Major and starts the experiments as a means of furthering her research and success, or perhaps to use them to collectively reset everything that's happened, or to use them to generate more black lightning. Obviously, there are kinks to work out, I didn't know where it could go from there, but when I realized the Major was just some woman on a rooftop without any obvious agenda, and no cool twist was in sight for the captain & the research lady, I realized I was just watching a sci-fi version of Once Upon a Time. Cheesy writing, terrible acting, etc. How the heck did this show get a Season 2 or Season 3??? It was awful, but I was playing along just to see where it might be going, but after those "special effects" I realize it's not going anywhere. I am a video editor who can't find work living in rural Alabama. I don't know what their FX person got paid, but they could've probably gotten away with paying me less for a lot higher quality effects. I'm debating finishing this season at all.

Altered Carbon (2018–2020)
I'm the weirdo who loved Season 2
3 April 2020
Season 1 was amazing in every way. The first half (episodes 1-5) was a bit slow, but it was beautiful. There was a lot of character building and the forming of a very intricate plot. The second half (episodes 6-10) were mind-blowing as everything unfolded and the season finale just exploded with exquisite execution, making for a very promising new series for every sci-fi lover to become quickly addicted to.

As fans, we all grew excited to see what might become of Season 2. And we waited two years to get it. Some were disappointed, but others (like me) were exceedingly satisfied.

My only complaint is that the same thing happened in Season 2 as Season 1, where the first half (episodes 1-4) were slow and confusing as the story took its time coming together, but for me, all was redeemed during the entirety of the second half (episodes 5-8) when, like in Season 1, all the pieces came together in a beautifully executed explosion.

I loved every story arc with every single character. And I loved the conclusion in every single way.

I have a strong feeling that many of the negative reviews may be from viewers who didn't make it all the way to Episode 5 of the second season.

I just finished sobbing (and I am still drying my eyes) after that perfectly orchestrated finale.

I am excited for Season 3. I wouldn't want the writers to be affected by any of the negative reviews, but unfortunately, if they (the show creators) want this series to continue as badly as I do, they'll need to adjust their storytelling to appease those who need a more riveting beginning.

I believe they can do this! I can't wait for the next season!

Anne with an E (2017–2019)
UNRESOLVED! We need another season!
16 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We still don't know what came off Ka'kwet and her family. Did Anne write a letter to the Globe? There is so much more to this story that could be told. We need more! Please, Netflix, give us another season (or three). You can do it!

Regardless of unresolved storylines, I do not feel that my time was wasted watching this glorious series. I loved each and every second.

The Society (2019)
I tried...
25 February 2020
I decided to check out the Society because I became a fan of Rachel Keller after her stellar performance in Legion.

But this show reeks (ooh, that smell) of a teen movie with terrible acting, writing, direction, etc.

For a plot with some promise, it was too painful to continue after the first episode.

This is definitely a show for moody pre-teens without logic/imagination.

Alice in Wonderland (II) (1985)
Favorite Film of All Time
15 November 2019
There is no possible way I could count how many times I've watched this movie. I used to have a homemade VHS version of it with 80s commercials and everything, but it got lost somehow. Now, I have it on DVD.

I love bumping into people who also consider it their favorite movie. We'll start off as strangers, then the next thing you know, we're singing songs together and dancing around and the people we're with just stare at us like they've entered the Twilight Zone.

I've wondered about Natalie Gregory. What ever happened to her? The wrong Natalie Gregory was listed on her page for some recent work. But they're not the same person (confirmed by the wrong Natalie Gregory herself in a conversation with me on Facebook, cool girl!).

Anyway, I realize this isn't so much a review as a gushing over how much I love it. Mayhap I'll edit it in the future with better details on why I love it so much.

In the meantime, the White Queen is my spirit animal. Especially when she's a lamb.

The End

Swamp Thing (2019)
Terrible, but Watchable
16 June 2019
My review is based on the first 3 episodes:

You know... most people expect the science - or even the legal/medical protocols - to be inaccurate in works of science-fiction, but this show takes the cake. They just threw every common sense - in this case, CDC - protocol right out the window.

Every scene was predictable. Every actor acts as though they already know their arc, so the characters aren't believable, and it's super easy to guess 'who' is going to do 'what' long before they do it.

And the writing is 'The Room' level laughable. It's shows like this, though, that give me confidence in my own fiction writing skills.

But here's the thing - as cheesy & predictable as it all is - the special effects are on point. Minimal CGI. Everything seems real for the most part. Swamp Thing, itself, looks amazing. I'd easily say that the special effects & prop/costume department are carrying the show.

But for the love of all that is science-fiction, I do wish they'd at least consult with a member of the CDC to make their responses to events (protective measures, quarantine, etc.) a bit more realistic so that all of these scenes aren't unintentionally funny. You know?

And somebody put Abby's hair in a ponytail or updo so that she at least seems like a scientist. Wearing it down and stringy like Kurt Cobain has to be breaking so many health code violations. If not, she just looks childish, and I actually like the actor. She just isn't getting the best material to work with and she probably doesn't get a say in how her character looks.

But, just like Troll II & the Room, I still find this show entertaining, and I'll probably continue watching.

Film Should've Been Called "Meet Jack"
1 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film wasn't about Mary Poppins, it was all about Jack. Lin-Manuel Miranda made himself the star of the show, and the downfall in this is - all of his musical numbers were beyond sensory overload. It was difficult keeping up with the lyrics or discerning the lesson within. In the one about not judging a book by its cover, there was so much sexual innuendo that it felt like the lesson to be learned was: get to know someone in bed, beneath the sheets. Don't judge a person's sexual abilities based on their looks. It was disturbing.

Mary Poppins felt like a spectator and had very little to contribute in comparison. It really would've been nice if Jack had only had one musical number and if it had been less complicated and chaotic, as they all were.

The trip a little life fantastic (was that what they were saying?) was so awful that I felt sorry for Dick Van Dyke for having to say it with the kids at the end. It diminished the quality of the original film.

I gave the film 6/10 stars (instead of fewer) because it wasn't terrible enough to stop watching. I made it through to the end of the film, but even Mary Poppins's exit was confusing. She looks at the balloon with sadness, then lets it go, which led me to think she'd be sticking around.

When the children re-capped everything they'd done, it helped, because I was so lost. Whatever became of their mother's bowl? Did they get it back from Meryl Streep's character?

It just wasn't as cohesive as it could've been. And it was far too dominated by Jack (who came off as skeezy and not at all endearing).

All of that being said, I'm going to watch this movie again with my mom in the near future because she hasn't seen it and I know there are a ton of things that I missed on account of how chaotic it all was.

My only critique of Emily Blunt is she came off as far too sharp, her accent was harsh and not at all clean or delightful. She sounded like a villain most of the time.

I was definitely disappointed.

Electric Dreams (2017–2018)
Not Strong Enough for Standalone Episodes
20 September 2017
The first episode was like a very dull pilot. It felt old and under budget. The sound editing was awful. And with other standalone shows like Black Mirror as competition, this one doesn't stand a chance. It was a major yawn-fest. The actors gave it their best, but the first episode just felt unresolved, leaving it too weak to stand out as a solitary episode. The plot was too confusing and - of the discernible plot - cheesy. A very poor representation of the masterful works of PKD, for sure.

Supergirl (2015–2021)
A TRUE Superhero Show!!
17 March 2016
I love all of the morals and lessons this show has to offer. I love Supergirl, herself. It's not often a TV show has the ability to pull tears out of me during cheesy sentimental moments, but this one most certainly does. I'm wondering if some of the harsh reviews on here have only seen a couple of episodes because if you watch each & every one, consecutively, you'll begin to gain a new/better perspective on what this show is really about. It feels a lot more like Superman and stays true to the righteous heroic efforts that were originally intended with this franchise. I say - give it a chance (start from the beginning) and get your own perspective before writing it off based on some negative reviews from people who probably haven't seen the entire series up to the current episode. You know? Have your own thoughts. You can do it!!
