Whisky (2004)
A beautiful movie about uneventful lives
Yes zeidinho, you're right, it is an extremely slow movie and no, you're wrong, because it is a beauty as well. Every time you expect something to happen (which is not so often) it does not. And when you do not it does, but so casually and so not emphasized that you could very well miss it. In this respect the film is very surprising because, in contrast with its contents, the film itself does not follow the familiar patterns of storytelling. The acting is very small and very effective. The repetitive patterns (does your life change dramatically, every day?) are as painful as they are familiar. The language of images is very smart, no need to explain much. I laughed sometimes, I moaned more often and I liked it very much.

A film like a Christmas tree, crashed by its own weight
May be, if you like an associative filmed non-story of romanticism and kind of decadence, you will like this film, as nearly all professional reviewers in my country did. But for me it was a over-styled, swollen and pretentious humbug. Heavily use of slow motion, slowly crinkling cigarette-smoke, endless shots of dancing pumps or grabbing red polished fingernails meaning 'woman', long but meaningless looks into the eyes of the other or into the deep, every shot made from behind a curtain or a pillar and every shot another violin concert. Killing and overdone. And what a contradiction to 'In the mood for love', the masterpiece of Kar Wai, which was beautifully filmed but with holding breath. A failure and not a beautiful one, as reviewers will make you believe...
Osama (2003)
Beautiful film about a terrifying society
A simple and sad story told in a beautiful picture, but what makes the film really interesting is the context of it, the dramatic reality of a reli-fascistic society in which women mean nothing that is outlined to us. A reality that fortunately doesn't exist anymore in the same way in Afghanistan, but in various forms is still practiced in a number of countries. The actors are all non-profi's and they play wonderful. The only optimistic thing you can say about the film is that the girl playing the leading part (who was a beggar) could buy a simple house for her and her family after having played in the film.
In This World (2002)
Strong docudrama brings you in contact with immigrants
A strong and beautiful docudrama that brings the dangerous journey that illegal immigrants have to undertake very near. The story is thrilling and real at the same time. You knew it exists but after seeing the film you know far better how it can be.
8 femmes (2002)
An amusing tongue in cheek thriller
A very amusing pastiche of a traditional Agatha Christie whodunnit, a hyperrealistic X-mas musical and of the Phenomenon Called Woman. A mustsee for devotees of beautiful stylish camp. It's very attractive to see the 8 PCW play, sometimes (Isabelle Huppert) miles over the top. Meanwhile the chansons from the 50's are a pleasant surprise.
