Standard answer #1: RWPsThis is a threaded board. You hit reply on the specific post you want to respond to each Reply button has an arrow to denote which post it will reply to. Your post will then show as being a reply to that post on the page (check out nest or thread view if you dont understand that), and the person you replied to will get a notification that you replied to them. If you do reply to the wrong post, the notification goes to the wrong person, the person you meant to address may never know you tried to do so, and your post makes little sense to anyone else.
Putting RWP in the subject line in reply to such a scenario was something members of this board discussed and agreed to do in a thread. The idea being not just to notify the person replying wrongly, but it also lets those in threaded mode know not to check that post for a reply to the previous one - as these are posters who often have slow connections, that service is important to some.
Standard answer #2: ReportingThose who report actual users deprive the rest of us of the chance to respond to them. Me, I like being able to address racists, sexists, and homophobes and having the opportunity to change hearts and minds.
Reporters, instead, make them martyrs in their own mind. Out of sight is not out of mind.
Those who had them on ignore have them come back visible when they return with a different name. By reporting, you increase their audience.
Those of us who had spent time on posts in threads they began lose those, as all threads they started are deleted including the posts of others. The biggest victims of reporters are those of us who are willing to stand up against racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.
I wouldnt do it myself, but those who report offensive variations of another posters name, I can understand. Those who report thoughtcrime are attacking everyone here.
Child porn links and the like should be reported to police, if anyone. Reporting to IMDb only results in their removing the evidence needed to follow up.
Those of us who vow that we will not report use the symbol in our sigs.
Standard answer #3: AtheismAtheism is not a religion. Neither is it the lack of one. It is one single, solitary point of belief, and lumping all atheists together makes as little sense as lumping all theists together. All atheist refers to is that someone does not believe in any gods. A spiritual worldview is not incompatible with atheism. Not believing in anything beyond the physical world is called materialism.
Buddhists are atheists as, though there are a number who also subscribe to Hindu concepts, the idea of a creator-god is antithetical to the religion. As the Dalai Lama states, Buddhism does not accept a theory of God, or a creator. According to Buddhism, one's own actions are the creator, ultimately.
Standard answer #4: Einstein believed in God [eyes]Einstein was an atheist, and spoke regularly about it, calling the comments to the contrary lies. The comment that God does not play at dice has never been concretely attributed to him, and even so, could be read as metaphor. Einsteins fame was in large part because of his ability to put forward his thinking in everyday terms, and he used religious metaphors until faced with a lieabout my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated at which time he made things clear, repeatedly. As the lies about Einsteins beliefs are still fervently clung to, Ill include quotes from the man:
I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egoism, cherish such thoughts. It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly.Immortality? There are two kinds. The first lives in the imagination of the people, and is thus an illusion. There is a relative immortality which may conserve the memory of an individual for some generations. But there is only one true immortality, on a cosmic scale, and that is the immortality of the cosmos itself. There is no other."From the viewpoint of a Jesuit priest I am, of course, and have always been an atheist.... I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one. You may call me an agnostic, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our being."
Standard answer #5: Hitler was an atheist [eyes]Hitler was not an atheist. He was an avowed Christian, and referenced his beliefs regularly, most notably in Mein Kampf. In the truest sense, it can be said that he isnt Christian, but that doesnt erase that hes a theist.
Hitler not only functioned with the blessing of the Catholic Church, but demonizing Jews was common among Christians in the region at the time (the Catholic Church took until 1965 to forgive Jews for killing Jesus, FYI). It was that common perception, descended from religious thinkers such as Martin Luther (one of Hitlers stated inspirations) and his tract The Jews and Their Lies, which inspired the campaigns against Jews in the first place. Hitler gave taxes from Catholics to the Catholic Church. Owing to his involvement with the church, he went after gays, outlawed abortion, and set discipline standards. The Nazis ordered that Christianity be taught in schools. Religious mottos were part of Nazi uniforms. German troops were often required to be blessed by Catholic priests before going out. The SS enforced discipline against heresy against church doctrine.
One of the first things he did after gaining power was go after atheists.
Standard answer #6: Stalin and Mao killed more in the name of atheismStalin was an atheist (which is debatable, owing to his choosing to study for the priesthood), but the countless deaths under his regime werent in the name of atheism, they were in the name of power. While he came down on the Russian Orthodox Church, it should be remembered that this was the church whose seminary school he could not finish. He later named them a patriotic group during World War II and they revived parishes. Likewise, Mao (and his replacements) killed anyone who flouted his rules, including those of atheist religions such as Buddhism, Falun Gong, Taoism, etc. Dictators without fail kill to maintain and demonstrate their power, whatever excuses get put forward.
Standard answer #7: Same-sex marriageIf you disagree with same-sex marriages, fine, but recognize that the rule of law needs to be consistent - we dont just ignore the parts we dont like. Put forward a consistent, legally workable solution rather than expecting the world to carry out your whims. The anti-full marriage crowd is the greatest asset those who want full marriage have, which is a shame - Id prefer a full dialogue, but very few of that stripe are willing to approach that.
Also, recognize that the issue around same-sex marriage is only that of law. Whether or not legal recognition exists, churches can still perform gay marriages, individuals can consider themselves and others married, and no one can do anything to stop that.
Same-sex marriage will not lead to polygamy. With full marriage, everyone is treated equally under the law with equal access to the institution. Its only by bringing in alternative institutions such as so-called civil unions that polygamy and other alternative marriages have cause to claim legal institutions for their relationships. The difference is that full equal marriage offers access to all individuals, with a blind eye to gender. Allowing alternative institutions says that law has a requirement to offer recognition of alternative structures, nevermind that it is a rejection of the legal traditions in which legal marriage began. Settling for apartheid is not the answer.
Standard answer #8: Islam is/Muslims areIslam is not a monolithic entity. Like Christianity, there are different sects/denominations with different approaches and beliefs, as well as independents who measure their own interpretations of Islam. All rapes are committed by people, but we dont pretend the solution is to sanction all people rather than just rapists. Likewise, decrying Islam instead of dealing with the specific groups that foster extremism, including terrorism, is only adding to the problem.
Standard answer #9: Christianity is/Christians areAs with Islam above, Christianity is not monolithic. There are thousands of different denominations, and countless individuals who belong to none of them all with their own views. There are the Gnostic and Coptic Christians who have different texts, as well. Dont play your experience with some Christians into your dealings with all of them.
Standard answer #10: Abortion is murderAbortion is not murder. The primary definition of murder refers to knowingly ending a life, illegally and premeditated. If someone does not believe a fetus is a life, they cannot be committing murder by definition. There would be no malice and no intent to kill. Further, if you believe abortion is murder, theres obviously no reason for laws against abortion, is there? After all, there already are laws against murder.
Legal restrictions on abortion are backed by the intellectually and morally lazy who dont want to help offer alternatives or address the society we live in.
Standard answer #11: EvolutionEvolution is a fact - get over it. Neither was Darwin the first to present it - his grandfather Erasmus had theories on its workings before Charles was even born. Anaximander named our proto-ancestor the apeiron in the 5th Century BCE. We develop vaccines annually because viruses evolve immunities. We do the same with insect sprays. We have seen speciation in animals such as the Faroe Island mouse. All pretending that there are no concrete observed examples does is show that you havent done your homework.
Darwins theory is indeed only a theory, but one with strong evidence. However, it is a theory about how evolution works, positing natural selection. That evolution happens is simple fact. We have entire industries based around that simple fact.
Its ignorant to pretend evolution is a theory, or that Darwins theory is about its existence rather than its workings. It only shows you dont understand the subject at hand.
Standard answer #12: Intelligent DesignIntelligent Design is not science. Beyond that it breaks with all scientific inquiry by beginning with its conclusions, the basic tenet is unworkable. If creation is so complex that a designer is required, certainly that designer is more complex and requires a designer of its own, and so forth. While the questions it presents, and accompanying answers, have their place within philosophy or theology discussions, they have nothing to do with science.
Standard answer #13: Activist judgesActivist judge is a codeword for sour grapes. A judges job is to discern from the law and precedent what is legal and what supercedes when law conflicts. Someone using this term can generally be assumed not to have read the verdict, not to have a single legal argument as to why the decision was wrong, and to have a partisan reason to dislike the result. Without being able to cite where a ruling deviated from precedent and law, calling a judge activist is nothing but sour grapes.
Standard answer #14: Mother TeresaMother Teresa was a blight on India. Her blackmail tactics to prevent the use of birth control in a third-world nation are abhorrent, as are her active fights to stop access for the poor. She preached that the poor should accept their lot, and gave them care consisting of unsterilized needles and no pain killers while she checked into four-star hotels and private clinics for her own treatment (while hypocritically proclaiming that what she offered was of high enough quality that she would want no more). All this happened while millions of charity dollars were hoarded and sat in the bank while it did, she would claim that no care could be given unless local authorities donated more. Despite all this, her missions in total served relatively few people, and a single Protestant mission in Calcutta helped more daily than all her missions combined.
She was a hypocrite, telling the poor that dogma was inviolable, but making exceptions for her rich friends, such as Princess Dianas divorce. She praised dictators like Baby Doc Duvalier of Haiti and Enver Hoxha of Albania, and refused to return embezzled donations from Charles Keating, instead intervening in court to support him.
Standard answer #15: Spelling NazisIts and Youre are contractions for it is and you are, while its and your are possessives, saying something belongs to it or you. Too means excess as in too much while to has a number of meanings, the most common being a direction or infinitive as in to the moon and to be or not to be. For clarity, it helps to learn the difference. However, if the meaning is clear, that someone mixes any of the preceding up is secondary at best.
The chief issue is whether the reader understands what has been written.
Standard answer #16: Black rights cannot be compared to gay rightsNot only did those who fought for the rights of blacks use the term civil rights, but you can look at the alignments there were. The Black Panthers were officially aligned with the Gay Revolutionary Front, for example. Bayard Rustin, the organizer of the March on Washington in 1963 was openly gay, and those who know the history will remember that the picture of him talking to MLK while he was taking a bath was used by Strom Thurmond to allege an affair between them. King was the one who defended Rustins inclusion after that.
In 1986, Rustin claimed that the gay and lesbian community had become the "barometer" of human rights because it is "the community which is most easily mistreated." He also urged gay and lesbian organizations to stand up for all minorities.
Coretta Scott King said, I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.
Shes quoted her late husband in underlining that the fight he fought was for everyone: We are all tied together in a single garment of destiny . . . I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be".
And Martin also said, I have worked too long and hard against segregated public accommodations to end up segregating my moral concern. Justice is indivisible. Not my primary concern is blacks by any stretch. Justice. Equality. Civil rights. They were honest and upfront about their goals and concerns and its ignorant to put forward that human rights in general was just a side product of their work.
Coretta on gays in the Civil Rights Movement: Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, in Albany, Ga. and St. Augustine, Fla., and many other campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement," she said. "Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions."
Coretta was rather outspoken on the issue, while people sat back and insult her husband by setting forward that his aim was that small. It wasnt, which is why people listened as they did. Its why we celebrate him. As Coretta noted, he would be championing gay rights if he were alive now (well, she said that in 1996).
And it was Corettas clear linkage of civil rights as fought for by her husband to the fight for gay rights that got her funeral picketed by Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church. And all this is something anyone interested in civil rights would already know.
Again, it is an insult to men like King to put forward that they were fighting for anything less than human rights. Especially when they outright said so by using the term civil rights. Its the 21st Century, and some people still cant understand their core message.

She sings for who you are and all you have become,
A wise Warror of the night.
Cry out, loud and long and may you always soar in freedom.

Favourite self-quotes
2006feb06:So as the Danish newspaper is not a Muslim (I cant believe I have to say that), the tenets of faith that one would follow do not apply to it. Likewise, saying my toaster is an Orthodox Jew would not stop it from working on Saturdays.
2005jul20:Liberal and conservative describe tendencies when applied to people. Those who build any aspect of their lives around being one or the other generally have little to offer.
2004aug04:The great and generous, as well as the vile and violent, have read the Bible, Shakespeare, Marx, Greek mythology, and others and based their lives on their readings with that huge spectrum resulting. Recognize here that Im not putting that range down to the book, but to the reading - and I say reading rather than reader as in many cases, the work in question was interpreted for them by someone with an agenda of their own, conscious or not.
2004jul28: And finally, people who claim to know THE TRUTH (especially if all in capital letters) are the ones I dont accept Kool-Aid from.
Putting a link in a post is not mere coincidence; it requires some effort. I suppose it is possible that your face hit the keyboard during a spasm of rage and accidentally typed out the correct URL surrounded by the appropriate tags. Still, though, I think Ill keep believing it was intentional.
2004may04:Atheism is the lack of belief in one tiny element. There are as many reasons as there are atheists. Myself, I dont see any room for a sentient creator or guiding force, because I dont believe in separation like that. You, me, and everyone else is just part of the universe - one singular thing. The dividing lines are like borders on a map - we draw them and obey them, they dont actually exist. God, by definition, is separate, and therefore not possible in my view of things.
2004feb16: By simple numbers, the straight population, if it thought with one mind, would and could have stopped all of these things if it so wanted. It doesn't think with one mind, and judging by the world we live in, your implication that (most) straights think like you is an insult to straights everywhere. The gay audience watching is not enough to keep Will & Grace on the air, or even Queer as Folk. Further, there are gays who do not watch these shows, because >gasp!< gays do not all think alike! The laws that are cited in court rulings were not all written by gays; the proclamations are not all made by gay mayors and councillors; the gay characters are not all written by gay writers and played by gay actors; the support for each individual gay man or woman comes from family and friends who are not all gay.
2004feb02: Blame the wolves. Blame the sheep. Don't give them an out by trying to lay blame on a book.Every religion has idiots and a-holes who gorge themselves on power and lead a bunch of sheep into stupid, vicious, and evil acts. Blaming a religion instead of those who decide to apply it in stupid, vicious, and evil ways is letting them off the hook.
Reviews
Alberta Hunter: My Castle's Rockin' (1988)
A lesson in how to live.
Alberta Hunter was singing with King Oliver's band when they hired 15-year-old Louis Armstrong, she wrote Bessie Smith's first hit, she starred opposite Paul Robeson in "Showboat" in London, the first use of Dufay Colour in Britain was for a musical segment of hers.
Then, despite touring the world, work died off and she became a nurse until mandatory retirement, at which point she made a comeback singing at age 82!
The woman lived, and the spark still in her makes this documentary irresistible. You don't have to like blues, or the jazz age, or music just life.
Anytime I watch this film, I feel charged and ready to take anything on. The same has been true for anyone I've shown it to.
Jane and the Lost City (1987)
Masterpiece of Camp!
Jane was a very popular British comic strip that ran through the war years. Churchill hated it and wanted it banned, but it was too popular. The artist used to use the strip to make political points, and whenever it would be getting too dry for the readers, Jane would somehow lose her clothes.
The film version is played for camp, and brilliantly so by Kristen Hughes, Sam Jones (who also conveniently loses his clothes a few times in a nod to a later age), Maud Adams, and Elsa O'Toole as the Leopard Queen.
Yes, it goes over the top - it's meant to. Get giggly with a few friends and watch it.
