Nieuwe helden - in het hart van de tour (2014)
very dry inside look at cycling
I am interested in all things cycling and have watched several great documentaries about road races, bicycle makers, bike touring and urban cycle commuting. i loved them all - except this one. This doc was very dry even for a cycling fan. It does provide a behind the scenes glimpse at cycling the Tour de France but there was no real narrative. It was supposed to tell the story of a team racing a clean race in a sport that has been plagued with scandal, so I expected some drama but there was none.
Blackfish (2013)
Thought provoking and well made - even if it's biased
I would agree with some of the negative reviews that this film is biased and does misconstrue some of the facts in the Seaworld story. Seaworld does have a website to present counterarguments to the documentary. I looked at this website and although it points out some flaws in the film it did not change my mind about the films main message which is that keeping these large intelligent mammals in captivity is cruel and potentially dangerous. This film really does make you think twice before planning a trip to an aquarium or zoo and it inspired me to do some research into similar parks in Canada. Overall it is a compelling and enlightening documentary especially for those unfamiliar with this story.
Prom Night in Mississippi (2009)
Interesting subject but falls short of expectations
Several months before I watched it I listened to Morgan Freeman do an interview about this film. That interview was fantastic and it sparked my interest in the film. Now that I've seen the film, I think I actually got more out of listening to the interview. Although there were some interesting moments, there wasn't enough drama throughout to make me really want to keep watching. While, I am glad the film was made for the sake of exposing the kind of racism that still exists in some areas, it's not a film I would recommend to everyone. It was well made but could have been more concise. It's probably best used as a classroom tool to generate discussion.
