In Shadow (2003)
Beautiful
I loved it. I watched this on TV during a special on 'Showcase'. This was such a beautiful short film, beginning to end. It was shot beautifully, very well acted, and very well directed. I recommend it, if you can find it (which might prove difficult). Out of the cast, Emily Hampshire as Lydia really stood out. She was convincing with her emotions, and just all around great. Very much a show stealer. Julia Chan's amazing short film, running at about twenty minutes, manages to pull off everything it intends to in its short time frame. It's very thought-provoking, dark, smart, and strange. Of the many short films I have watched this year, be them on television, at film festivals or otherwise, this is definitely on my top-ten list.
Squeezebox (2003)
Accordions, suicide, dogs, Freud and...
*SPOILERS*
Well, this film was definitely out of the ordinary, combining a range of subjects that are completely unrelated and mixing them together to make a very enjoyable film. Actually, one of the best scenes included the main character having a conversation with his Freudian dog while considering suicide. Squeezebox starts out with a man inside a washroom, a gun to his head, ready to kill himself. His wife and daughter are outside, trying to coax him out. His daughter plays the accordion and his wife sings, frantic.
All the while, his son, upstairs enjoys some... self-gratification, listening to his headphones, oblivious. Later, in the film, an accordion dance-party concert, more contemplation, break dancing and plain fun. I loved it.
Back to the Future Part II (1989)
Disappointing.
Honestly, I can't help but say I wasn't satisfied with this movie. If it wasn't Biff's grandson at the start (ugh, the way he talked, it's soooo irritating), it was not having Crispin Glover reprising his role. He was my favorite character of the first movie, and it was disappointing not having him there. Another thing, the woman who played Marty's girlfriend...maybe I just didn't like her character, but I found the acting was just...awful. But still, it coulda been the paper-thin character. *shrugs* Still, I had nightmares about Biff's grandson's voice...shudder.
