Potential thwarted by bad acting
29 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I was a fan of Machinima programs, but they've gone downhill over the past two years. Prime restored hope, gave us greatness like Halo: FUD and Blood and Chrome. I was equally excited by Omega when it was announced, but it didn't live up to expectations.

To make this simple, I am going to list the pros and cons below.

Pros

-Unique take on alien invasion -Some cool action sequences (note a very cool scene in Episode 4, the most recent release at the time this review was written) -Location variety (feels a lot like Walking Dead) -Some good visual effects moments for a low budget show. Some of the visual effects sequences are much better than what we get on SyFy -Sense of realism following small bands of survivors

Cons

-Acting. UNFORGIVABLY BAD. A couple of the actors are passable, but they play very small roles. The best ones play characters named Dustin and Darcy, but they're barely on screen! The military commander and Jon were casting mistakes that, for me, kill key moments in every episode -Atrocious camera work. It's hand-held, which is fine and works with movies like the Bourne series, but this is just bad camera work top to bottom. -Dialogue. In fairness, this is mostly attributed to the horrible acting. -Makeup effects. Some of these moments are OK, but a lot of it isn't well executed.

At the end of the day, this could have been a very unique and interesting low budget series. The storyline is pretty interesting as a concept, but it's almost impossible to give plot the attention it deserves because of how poorly it's performed. When you're cringing during a scene because of some bad acting, you forget about the important information being given.

Transcends our expectations of cinema
24 June 2012
I walked into "Moonrise Kingdom" with absolutely no expectations. I'm someone who is very open to all genres... I can watch "There Will Be Blood" endlessly, and turn around to watch a film like "Transformers" - accepting both for what they are.

This movie is an anomaly. Not only is the style something rarely seen, but I couldn't categorize the movie at all.

While watching there were moments in which I felt this was some of the most brilliant direction I've ever seen, while there were other moments that I wished had been replaced with something more... fitting. This was my reaction in the theatre.

Now that the film has really been setting in, I've realized that this might be one of the most perfect movies I've ever seen. Not only did it hit the beats perfectly, and carry a fantastic - yet subtle - sense of humour, this film really triumphed in executing a perfect depiction of memory.

Nothing about this film is "real", nor is it intended to be. Watching was like recalling childhood memories of a first love, the way we once perceived adults, etc. The visuals are that of a memory, the exaggeration of certain components are that of memory, etc. etc. etc. - And likely not coincidentally, I now think back on many of its moments as something that exist as a memory... rather than something I watched on a 70 ft screen for $12 admission.

Brilliant Writing. Brilliant Photography. Impeccable Direction.

Whether or not you enjoy this film upon first viewing, I encourage you to look at this film for what it does, rather than what it is. You will realize that in many ways it transcends what we come to expect of cinema, and gives us something entirely new and magical.

Dead at 17 (2008 TV Movie)
1/10
Laughable in every aspect
3 September 2010
Rarely do I see a film I care to review. But I felt forced to warn the world as to how horrible this movie is. Some of the worst direction in even average television history, the acting nearly as bad as the direction, and absurd writing make this film one of the worst to reach audiences of all time.

How this film was funded, put into production, and actually sold is mind boggling. There is nothing more to say than I already have. "Dead at 17" is just as bad as its title suggests, and I can guarantee you one thing - This is a film full of cast and crew who will never work a significant gig in their life.

Don't waste your time. Consider yourself warned.
