Deep Rising (1998)
It doesn't get any worse
Getting a tooth pulled would be more pleasurable than watching this joke. The 100 % CGI Creature looks like it came from a bad video game and doesn't blend in with the rest of the movie at ALL (especially when it's combined in scenes with human actors). That combined with a dumb plot and shallow characters makes this a must miss. This film and parts of the new Star Wars Episodes are excellent examples of how CGI can ruin a picture. Don't get me wrong - I love CGI when it's done right (Lord of the Rings series, ect. ) but there's just too many movies out there lately that have been abusing the technology and loosing credibility in the process. Know what I mean???
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
Nothing less than a Classic
If you haven't seen this movie yet, a sinister tale of the eroding relationship between 2 elderly sisters- don't hesitate as it's nothing less thank a classic! The combination of perfect casting and a twisted storyline defined a very special and popular genre of 1960s horror that is as mesmerizing today as it was over 40 years ago. There have been remakes and copycats, but take my word for it - There will never be anything like the original Baby Jane!!!!!
The Ring (2002)
A major Dissapointment
SPOILER I never saw the Japanese original but it most certainly had to have been better than this lame remake. The Ring ends up being nothing more than a dragged out wild goose chase to find out why you die 7 days after watching some video. When I first heard the premise, I was skeptical that such a juvenile plot could be pulled off. The explanation at the end of the film - that you are killed by the ghost of a little girl that died 7 days after being dumped in a well, is a far-fetched letdown to the big buildup the rest of the film provides. And if this is intending to be a horror movie, it's a half-hearted attempt with only a handful of scary images sprinkled throughout it's 2 hour duration. If you consider Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and the Friday the Thirteenth series good horror, you'll probably want to waste your time watching The Ring - otherwise don't bother. This movie gets a 4 by me and that's being generous....
Logan's Run (1976)
I Love this Movie!
I love this movie for a number of reasons It's got a wonderfully original storyline, eye candy visuals, great 1970's hairdos, doesn't require a PHD to figure out and is just plain fun to watch. I know there are some people on this site that have dissected Logan's Run like a frog in Science Class and have dismissed it for some short comings. But if you attempt to watch this movie by holding a magnifying glass up to it and comparing it's special effects and sets to films like Star Wars, you're not going to enjoy it because it doesn't compete on that level. It's strength is an emphasis on the human condition and rebelling against a regimented society that lies to it's people and the special effects are just along for the ride. Also unlike Star Wars, I look at this movie as a period piece because it's a 1970's perspective on one possible future society and watching it (especially now)you never forget that. Yes it's dated, but like many things from the 70's reminds us of a simpler time and place we can remember fondly.
Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
A dissapointment
***WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!***
As an avid Hellraiser Fan I thoroughly enjoyed the first and second installments of this wonderful concept. To me however, the third was a huge letdown and I didn't even bother seeing the forth. However recently spotting Hell seeker in the video store with Ashley Lawrence reprising her character convinced me to rent it immediately. Personally I found it a disappointment for several reasons.
First there just wasn't enough of the Cenobytes in this picture. We mostly see Pinhead but his total screen time is probably less than 5 minutes. The others make extremely brief appearances and it seems like their costume designs are clearly lacking the originality and distinctiveness present in the first two films.
Second there just isn't enough of Ashley Lawrence either. We see her in the beginning, the end and flashbacks in-between but her brief appearances are missed and not enough to develop the strong character we all know and love in this most recent sequel.
Thirdly, the constant teasing between what's real and what isn't to the main character is just plain frustrating. Yes we find out the truth in the end but after all the deception do we really care?
Finally, defining Christy's Husband as the central evil character in the real world is poorly executed. For 75 percent of the movie, we're expected to be sympathetic to a character that believes he's nothing more than a decent loving husband and is just trying to find out what's happened to his life. While his interaction with other characters gradually reveals the type of person he was before the accident, he maintains his innocence all the way till the end disbelieving that he could have been such a horrible person. Are we expected to believe that the accident made him completely forget about his evil doings but not about everything else, including all the other details in his life? Sounds like selective memory loss and I just don't buy it in this case.
At least the twist at the end is nice and Christy survives to go on and hopefully appear in a better sequel!
