Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
Capra at his VERY BEST!
This is without a doubt, the best Frank Capra movie I've seen. It has the typical Capra storyline of an average man who becomes great, but it's told in an incredible way. Mr. Smith shows the corruption in the senate and tells the story of one man who wants to stand and fight the corruption.
Jimmy Stewart gives the performance of his career in Mr. Smith. He perfectly plays the naive junior senator Jeff Smith. Stewart is once again teamed with Jean Arthur as his secretary, also in her best performance. Claude Rains is brilliant as the Senator Joseph Paine who attempts to destroy Smith when Smith discovers his plans to build a dam in their home state.
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington has everything that makes a movie great. Brilliant directing, brilliant acting, and a fantastic screenplay. Not only is Mr. Smith Capra's best film, but it's also one of the greatest of all time.
It Happened One Night (1934)
Classic Capra
Of all the Capra movies I've seen this is probably my least favorite. Even still, I gave this movie a 10. Capra is by far my favorite director, and it seems that no matter what he does he always delivers. I'm personally not a huge Clark Gable fan, but I actually found him very entertaining in this movie. I actually found him quite funny in this movie. One of the best things about Capra movies is that no matter how old they are, they never seem dated. Eventhough this movie was made in 1934, it still holds up well today. This movie is a great romantic comedy with a hilarious ending. A must see.
You Can't Take It with You (1938)
Refreshing Comedy
You Can't Take It With You isn't my favorite Capra movie, but I just had to comment on it. This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I'm tired of the kind of comedies that come out these days that do nothing but try to shock you with gross out humor. You Can't Take It With You is a great comedy and best of all it's a clean movie.
Jimmy Stewart is great as always and Edward Arnold is brilliant as the stuck up, money crazed father. The screenplay is fantastic and Capra's direction is brilliant as always.
If you are also tired of the lame gross out comedies that are coming out by the dozen and insulting your intelligence and you want to see a clean movie you can laugh at or if you're a fan of Frank Capra, than You Can't Take It With You is a must see.
A Story of David (1960)
Someone please get it right!
I for one am tired of people making these boring inaccurate biblical epics. This like most movies about David messes up the story. I've yet to see one David movie that gets the story right. Some would argue that you have to change some things to make it an entertaining movie, however if this is the case why isn't this movie entertaining? I think that the Bible's story of David is very interesting, but no movies get it right. This movie is at the bottom of the barrel. The story is twisted around and the movie is boring. The director seemed more concerned with trying to showcase big battle scenes (which are very unimpressive) than telling a great story. If you want to see a decent biblical epic than stay away from this. If you are trying to cure insomnia, this is the best sleeping pill I know of.
