LaRoy, Texas = Fargo + Dumb & Dumber
23 April 2024
I must say I like to give opinions of movies I have not heard of or read anything before, hence not having been influenced by critics or media in the first place. Well I'm afraid this one is far from what it may looks like. A good 10 minute start brings and offers promising plot, although right after the movie starts its descend to nowhere. A ridiculous Steve Zahn character combined with an excessive twisted plot, pushes the whole story to the edge of the cliff, where it finishes by falling into the abyss of boredom and grotesque. Yet the atmosphere and other characters like Dylan Baker and a good photography, may deserve some consideration, so I dare to give a 5,9 over 10, in the end. LaRoy, Texas results of an failed attempt of bringing back Fargo to live. The division line is clear; whilst Fargo is a tough and violent drama combining horror with bitterness humor, LaRoy Texas just end up being a whole dumb redneck game of useless characters trying but getting nowhere. Nope, not this one guys. Better try with small movies like Sweet Virginia (2017) or the more mainstream Three Billboards outside Edding (2017) , as they may keep the Fargo spirit with some better dignity.

Not faithful to the original novel
9 February 2024
Overrated, and far from the original Richard Matheson great novel, the movie just serves the purpose of pleasing Charton Heston fans,. The plot is missing plenty of the great original details Richard Matheson left in written in his great novel, and which were dismissed for this movie version, as apparently did not serve the interest of producers. Disappointing and boring at some parts, still wonder where are the actual creatures - vampires- Matheson wrote about? I must say 2007 Francis Lawrence version of the same novel - I am Legend- is far better, faithful and closer to the story of sci-fi maestro Richard Matheson. Just too bad...

Nothing new to the thriller genre
28 December 2023
For the last years I have become very found of the scandinavien school of cinema. Great contemporary actors and directors achieved a high reputation throughout international distribution for the last 30 years, so I have always given my good to go before the chance of enjoying a new movie from either Denmark, Sweden or Norway. Drama and thriller is probably the genre most main directors feel at ease working on, so we have seen many. Jägarna, does not bring any new input to the genre. Though pretty well acting, the plot does only bring topics we have already seen before too many times.

Let us take TV Series Broden (The Bridge) Season1 where Swedish female cop meets Danish cop to help on a serial killer case, and mix it with some good feature films like Druk (Another Round) where a group of friends meets up to get drunk in bars and restaurants, and you will have Jägarna.

Jägärna background story - the rein deer hunters we are just introduced at the beginning- is just the excuse for a "wild redneck bunch of killers" vs "good cops team" with forced last-minute limit situations which at some point may not be credible. Though entertaining, the story is not working deep enough into the main characters falling by the middle into a classic good vs evil confrontation. Yet some characters can be found tender giving the story a side twist by the end. Sorry, I was expecting more with on this one , yet as a dejà-vú story to me, does not deserve more than a 6.

Hollidays of a Palestinian Mr. Hulot
5 April 2020
I watched this movie not knowing really much, and looking forward something fresh from a co-production with a Palestinian country. The search of identity of Palestina abroad, and its self comparison with other cultures like the French and North American ones is present along the whole movie. Suleiman playing a role in the pants of a Palestinian Mr.Hulot keeps wondering around all the time, experiencing surrealistic situations and getting nothing much in return than the shadow of a smail reward from the viewer. Yet for the magic of some images, and its beautiful photography the movie can be watched along his somehow short time length. One minute celebrity cameo appearance towards the end among the best of this movie. If you like slow motion films, Mr.Hulot type with almost not dialogues, this one's for you.

Patient Zero (I) (2018)

Nothing much new on the genre
14 August 2018
While you may have expected something more, this movie is full of topics and does not bring anything new to the genre. Albeit within a low cost budget you would have wanted a bit more of originality, but that was not the case. Can't deny having Stanley Tucci in the cast made me feel a bit more confident, as his performance intends to boost up a bit the whole thing at some point introducing his character but does only last a very short while, falling into the abyss of boredom later on. Predictable and poor the movie drifts between the relationship set by the medical team ,the army and the infected ones, these jailed to be interrogated in search of Patient Zero; and yet you would have expected something else , a bit of fresh air far out from the cliche, but to my regret that was not the case.

Best is its short length
9 September 2015
Just came out of the premiere in L'Etrange film festival, in Paris. The theater was full, promising plot, expectations high up. Yet, what a disappointment. I admit it is about an experimental thriller, and budget is rather tight, but at least you expect some sort of coherence in the story. The film is almost unspoken, so that the soundtrack takes over as a role play, although even the music is out of swing, off line. Plenty of details impossible to believe, like the tempos underwater without oxygen, long staying in freezing waters eyes wide open and yet no sign of damage or deep frozen fingers that can get cured miraculously overnight...film concept though is good, yet bad resolved. Just as well its 75 minutes length made it easier to go through.

Low cost entertaining
7 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I must admit, I was attracted first by the poster, pretty cool, and end up watching the film not knowing much what was I going to see. The movie approach to the myth of vampires is fresh and different, right on the tail of documentary movies like Chronicle, or Cloverfield but rather low budget. Some parts are well treated like the seizures Derek show, but something more consistent is missing. The camera men behavior is not credible allowing his best friend turning out, and yet not doing anything about it. Final fight is rather childish. Yet, must say that for a first long feature is not that bad. Surely will see them in future mainstream productions where they will be up to deploy better jobs.
