A Mighty Wind (2003)
Amusing, but a bit weak.
After seeing Best in Show I was a little disappointed by this one. The problem for me was that there was little character development. You never get to know the characters like in Best in Show. I also found Eugene Levy's burnt out folkie character to be too "over the top" to be even remotely believable. Finally, I resented the fact that the ever lovely Parker Posey was practically just an "extra". Overall there are some chuckles in this one, but it's not a memorable movie.
School of Rock (2003)
Some funny lines, but we've seen this before
I have a theory, which may not be unique, that there are only about a dozen movies in the world and they keep remaking them. School of Rock is the one where a n'er do well scams his way into a situation, gets in over his head, but shortly before his condemnation he redeems himself by demonstrating how much good he has done, credentials be damned. So, a tired plot but some good laughs. A little above average.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Hope you like sci-fi
I'm an idiot. I went to see this movie with friends, even though I have never enjoyed science fiction in any form. Well, imagine that, I didn't like this movie. SPOILERS: Here's a quick summary: Ominous industrial futuristic setting. Pretentious and overly dramatic speech about saving themselves from destruction. Ridiculous fight scene between Keanu Reaves and about 100 robot-guys. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The only good thing about this ponderous piece of sci-fi was the car chase, and even that dragged on too long. I still have no idea why people like sci-fi. Oh well. Not my problem.
The Commitments (1991)
I have to disagree...
I checked the video box and, yes, I did watch the same movie everyone else is raving about. I play rhythm guitar in an informal blues/jam band, so I can appreciate the subject matter of the film. However, I was unable to give The Commitments more than a 5 out of 10. My main problem with the film was the rapid fire, unintelligible dialogue. I stopped rewinding and replaying once I realized that, ***SPOILERS AHEAD** if their voices were low they were imagining how soul music would change their lives (yeah, right), or if it was loud it was the band members about get into another fight. Do Irish people really treat each other that way? The exchange of dialogue between the actors was also so rapid as to be unbelievable. The unfolding of the story and the characters were hard for me to believe, too. "Hey, I've been unemployed for 3 years, but I suddenly have a clear vision of exactly what kind of band to put together, and the motivation to do so!" Then, "Hey, here's this veteran musician that has nothing to do but answer a newspaper ad, and will join us and show us the ropes"! Then "We'll practice awhile, then sound great!" Bloooody s***e, anya upinya bullocks, fookin deadly s***e. Aye. Not trying to be a jerk, but this film looked like it was written in a day and filmed in a week. Subtitles would help, too, for those of us who speak English.
