Ash and Bone (2022)
Solid Character Driven Horror Film
I really liked this film! I appreciate horror films that don't rely on over-the-top graphic violence and/or nudity. I love violence in films, but there are far too many filmmakers, especially in the horror genre, that think that violence, sex, nudity, or a lot of profanity will disguise the fact that they lack solid storytelling. In 'Ash and Bone', writer Bret Miller takes a few popular themes, such as a troubled teenage girl who is warring with her step-mom, a small town with dark secrets, and hillbilly siblings with a penchant for evildoing, and nicely weaves them into a cohesive story. There's enough suspense, violence, blood, and cringe-worthy moments to keep things interesting, while maintaining a truly character driven endeavor. The performances are very good across the board, but Erika Hoveland and Jimmy Doom really stand out as the twisted sister/brother duo. Producers Harley Wallén and Kaiti Wallén successfully deliver an entertaining horror film.
Hope for the Holidays (2020)
Marvelous cast and story! Sally Kirkland and Robert LaSardo are phenomenal!
Ricky Borba's HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS is a wonderful film! Marvelous cast and beautiful story! I'm like, 'there's no way this film is going to make me cry', but dang-it-all if Sally Kirkland didn't have me reaching for the tissue box! Seriously, this film is a MUST SEE! Sally Kirkland and Robert LaSardo are both absolutely phenomenal in this, as are Doug Hutchison and George Stultz! Congratulations to Ricky and everyone, for delivering a solid, heartfelt Christmas film, that truly fills your heart with hope!
Silence (2010)
Very moving, well acted film!
Writer/director, Todd Braley, has a very underrated gem of a film here! This well written story revolves around physical and sexual abuse, and is very moving with a strong message to it. The cast, which is made up entirely of local Grand Junction, Co. actors, is amazing! It's really very impressive what Todd Braley accomplished on the shoestring budget he made it for. This film is well worth watching. Make sure you have a box of tissues close by. Bravo, everyone!
Eternal Code (2019)
Fun film, superb performances!
I really enjoyed watching this film! The cast really make this film worth watching! Richard Tyson gives a very effective performance as the creepy but charming greedy corporate executive who will stop at nothing to get his way. I was extremely impressed with Erika Hoveland, who gave a truly outstanding performance! I loved Damien Chinappi as the brooding homeless man. He has a wonderful Colin Farrell mystery and charm about him and I expect that we'll be seeing amazing things from him in the future! Harley Wallen also gives a standout performance, as does Kaiti Wallen, Ken Alter, Angelina Danielle Cama, Yan Birch, Shane Hagedorn, Billy Wirth, Vida Ghaffari, and Mel Novak! Harley Wallen has the magic touch when it comes to directing his actors, bringing the very best performances out of his already superb cast! I also noticed the very good camera work which really gives the film life. I recommend this as a curl up on your couch with a bowl of popcorn film!
Abstruse (2019)
Excellent thriller! Fantastic cast!
Very well written script, and solid storytelling by writer/director Harley Wallen! And I can't say enough about this phenomenal cast! It's obvious that Harley is an 'actor's director', as there is not a single weak performance to take the focus off of what's happening on the screen. He craftily weaves the story he's telling with the strong performances of his actors to create a very nice flow of suspense, drama, and danger for his audience. Tom Sizemore gives a stand out performance, which he has very deservedly won several awards for. Kaiti Wallen is very convincing as Tom Sizemore's daughter, who is victimized, but plays her role smartly, and not as a one dimensional victim. Harley Wallen is excellent as well. All the characters are completely fleshed out. I don't want to say too much, as to not give anything way, but this story has plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it!
