Candyman (2010)
Why Weird Al?
I love documentaries like these. I know that they tell one man's side of the story and you should always take them with a grain of salt.
The topic was fascinating. The story was worth telling. But there were parts of it that were confusing. The most confusing part was, "Why was Weird Al in this movie at all?" He was interviewed early on, and I waited for that magic moment when I'd find out what significance he played toward the fame or business aspect of the company. Maybe he was a family friend through the years.
But he has no real reason to be there. I finally concluded that he was there for quirky star power. So odd.
The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996)
Mostly good
I bought the DVD at Walmart because it looked okay, and was less than 6 bucks. Somehow the movie lost me when the cricket said they should bottle the pine scent. At that point it seemed to have a different writer. But the worst of all is the out of place Stevie Wonder songs. When I heard him sing I thought, "What is THAT noise? Who screwed up the sound track?"
Nonetheless, the wooden puppet is great and I particularly like the way they handled Pinocchio's origin (the tree carving) and the water transforming device. They were welcomed twists that gave the classic story some freshness.
Bob Roberts (1992)
Try "Dave" instead
I saw this movie edited for television. Some of the songs were pretty funny, but the movie got tired as it progressed. If you want to see a movie that seems prophetic, watch "Dave." The President seems to be designed around Bill Clinton (if I recall, his first name is Bill too). Bob Roberts tries to be a social commentary and fails, while "Dave" comes as just entertainment and really makes you think.
