Darby and Joan (2022)
A struggle to watch
I'm really not sure where the 10 star reviews for this were coming from.
We couldn't even watch the whole of the first episode.
Actors struggling with a less than interesting script; incongruous plot leaps; boring characters; unlikely and unbelievable premise...if it wasn't for the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING scenery it would be 0 stars from me.
The actors look as if they are totally bemused at having to work with such a trite and immature script - the "chemistry" between them is all too evident as they almost roll their eyes at some of their lines. They both appear to be mocking both the writer and the viewer with their "in joke" looks.
It really is such a shame to see a whole lot of really great Australian talent wasted on this drivel.
Do yourself a favour and ignore it completely.
The Northman (2022)
VERY peculiar mixture
Strange. Weird mish mash of paganism, satanism, corrupted ancient legend, sort of Grimm fairy tale on a really baaad trip. Odd, imaginary rituals, time slips, almost incoherent narrative. Why does he grab a RED cloak if he wants to remain unseen? How is he not noticed when sitting on board in wet clothing? Trying, maybe, a Lord of the Rings type mysticism clothed in ancient nordic noir, blood, cruelty, murder, howling, nudity, and general mayhem. I was hoping for some excitement, some swashbuckling and maybe some colour. A total disappointment on all fronts. What the hell did the cast members think they were doing? A real career mistake for all of them imho.
The King's Man (2021)
Don't bother
A sheer, unmitigated massacre of history and the ruination of the King's Man series. 2 hours and 10 minutes you will rue wasting on this.
Crass, convoluted storyline; implausible cliched characters; obviously made for pre-teen boys who play violent video games.
The 355 (2022)
Just don't
2 hours you'll never get back.
Cheap looking.
Predictable cliche after cliche after cliche ...
Plastic cast.
Typecast villians.
Penelope Cruz is probably wondering why she bothered - this is a reputation ruiner.
Not one redeeming feature.
Black Ghost (2018)
2 stars for effort - otherwise not worth the time
Hmmm...methinks that the cast and crew of this shocker may have been reviewing it a little more favourably than it deserves.
It is sheer, unadulterated, rubbish. Poorly made, poorly scripted, very poorly acted, and really, quite laughable. It truly has the potential to be a cult favourite like that other Western Australian made shocker, These Final Hours.
If you have absolutely nothing else to do and nothing else to watch, and feel like a laugh and a cringe, then this is the one for you.
