Inception (2010)
Inception: A Trip to the Unfathomable Depths of Human Mind
After "The Prestige" and "The Dark Knight", Christopher Nolan comes forth to impress the public with yet another masterpiece: "Inception".
The movie tells the story of an adept thief, Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), trained to extract information from people's subconscious while they are dreaming. Troubled by the memories of his departed wife (Marion Cotillard) and eager to return to his children, he accepts one last job that can make it possible for him to come home. The task is the opposite of extracting information: Cobb has to implant an idea in someone's head.
I loved everything about this picture, but what stroke me most was its originality. The hi-tech environment and the society pervaded by industrial behemoths are the premises for a world in which man can't make the distinction between reality and imagination, truth and lie. Consequently, the dream becomes the battlefield and the ultimate weapon is the idea. The utter bewilderment of the modern man becomes his religion and only his thoughts are the "parasites" resilient enough to survive in this deceitful world.
Aesthetically captivating, with stunning performances, great screenplay and brilliant Hans Zimmer soundtrack, I believe "Inception" is a milestone for the 21st century cinematography and a Nolan-branded masterpiece about human mind ,ideas and imagination
but the question remains: is the dream real?
Ho Ho Ho (2009)
A typical Christmas movie
The action takes place in Bucharest, a day before Christmas. Unable to pick her son, Horatiu, a Christmas present, Carmen promises to offer him a day at the mall. Unfortunately, Horatiu gets lost in the shopping center and meets a thief,John, disguised in Santa Clause who doesn't seem to behave like the traditional Christmas character. The adventure begins as Horatiu is desperately trying to find his mother, while John's team is planning to steal a priceless diamond. It is a typical Christmas movie, inspired by the concept of 'Home Alone'. The fact that the distribution is Romainian may be a deterrent for foreign audience. Added to this, the actors' performance as a whole is mediocre and the screenplay reflects a dearth of originality. I recommend you watch this movie if you are a fan of Stefan Banica Jr. or you haven't got any Christmas-related films on 25th of December.
Nine (2009)
I love the Cinema Italiano!
Directed by famous Rob Marshall, the movie captures the hectic life of Guido Contini(Daniel Day-Lewis), an Italian movie director. Caught between the many women in his life: his wife ( Marion Cotillard), his mistress ( Penelope Cruz), a journalist( Kate Hudson), his muse(Nicole Kidman), a prostitute(Fergie) and even his mother(Sophia Lauren), he lacks inspiration and fails to come up with a script for his next movie. I liked very much the opulent Italian style combined with music that pervaded the whole movie. The storyline is based on Federico Fellini's masterpiece:'Otto e mezzo' and almost the entire movie is homage to Fellini's concept of cinematography. If you liked 'La Dolce Vita' or 'Otto e mezzo', there is a high probability that this movie will impress you. Furthermore, the cast members were well chosen , especially David Day-Lewis, who performed impeccably and the music was very adequate for what the movie is trying to represent. If you enjoy musical or abstract motion pictures, fashion, opulence in style or confusing artistic scenes, "Nine" will most definitely rise to your expectations.
