Miller & Son (2019)
Touching and Real
Watched this film recently online.
It's a student film, but the maturity of storytelling here belies that kind of confining definition. Although it is one of what are many shorts addressing trans lifestyle, this direct chose a very small but meaningful way to address the challenge of coming out to a family member.
Jesse Keitel, who plays the lead, is spot on in her performance. Not a lot in terms of words, but a huge talent there.
Ryan Cutrona, who's had a long career including a great performance in Mad Men as a grandfather will alzheimers, never overplays his cards.
Beautiful production values and photography. And exceptional piece of film. Highly recommended.
Stranger Things (2016)
Back in the 1980s
While I was too young in the 80s to remember details, I do remember how it looked and felt, and the great thing about this show is the way it captures that feel as much as it copies the look.
I've seen this series three times now, and it's just as enthralling the third time as it was the first, and I was hardly expecting that. If you are a fan of Spielberg, Stephen King, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Evil Dead, Aliens, Poltergeist, and the lot, then you'd be insane to miss this.
The Last Chance Dance (1984)
Exceptional first film
This movie was directed by Phil Joanou, who Spielberg took under his wing after seeing this and subsequently hired to direct Three O'Clock High.
In a way, this short film is a primer for Three O'Clock High. It's got the same nerdy, awkward lead, an unrequited relationship with a girl "friend," a series of mishaps all built around timing (a dance that the leach character wants to take his crush to), and friends looking to help him along the way.
Great writing, professional cast (although the lead, while funny, seems to always be playing catch up with everyone else), and impeccable production. Highly recommended.
