The Artist (2011)
A tribute to silent movies
I love silent movies, so i was waiting eagerly to watch this movie. The performances are perfect by the whole cast, including the dog (reminds me of Asta, "Thin Man's" dog), the leading duo is a perfect match, the music is excellent, the photography too, but i can't oversee that the film is too predictable, although the movie's end is left open to one's imagination and in some sense the alienation between Valentin and his wife seems not well justified, given the fact that Valentine didn't seem to have an affair. Nevertheless it is a nice movie to be remembered for years to come, a decent tribute to silent movies and definitely one of the best movies of the year.
The Descendants (2011)
Just an O.K. movie.
In my opinion it was an O.K. movie, especially considering the 2011's lack of quality movies, nothing special however. I still can't decide whether Clooney acted above his acting standards or not, maybe it's his one-dimensional cool persona, that was established after dozens of pretty much similar films, maybe it's his face that can't easily express deeper feelings, but i think these tears he cried didn't seem convincing enough. Anyway, it's a movie that doesn't try hard to awaken emotions, succeeds in keeping an equilibrium between laughs and cries and except for one or two scenes that seemed overblown it was rather fun to watch. Good acting by the comatose woman (lol) and the three kids!
The Green Hornet (2011)
Literally no laughs at all! One of the worst comedies ever (if not the worst)!
I strongly believe this movie was shot in a week! Poor plot, many unnecessary shots, Seth Rogen is so overrated, trying hard to be funny, but as usual ends up being just a spastic! A simple question: The role of Cameron Diaz was really necessary for this film? Please, come on, get real: 6,2 for this movie, where did good taste go? Please, a little piece of advice to all wanna be movie critics out there: Express your real point of view and don't be afraid to be considered uncool by rating all flops with less than compromise-sixes. I think writing ten lines of text for this movie is way more than it actually deserves. I'm trying hard to remember one worse action-comedy than this. Complete waste of time this movie was!
Sátántangó (1994)
No "Rosebud" here! You will have to try hard to find it!
I was familiar with Tarr's "Harmonies of Werkmeister", but i think there is noway that they match this unprecedented masterpiece! Take 7 hours of your lifetime and watch the film, not a single minute is needless! Perfect cinematography, pace, music, photography. Acting was flawless and i think that many of the actors were amateurs. The whole child's episode offered one of the most moving performances in the history of cinema! Tarkovsky sure is an influence for Tarr. While watching it the only scene that seemed needless was the Doctor-episode, but the end of the film put the things in order - or not? Nothing less than an heroic feat in the history of cinema! Right from the famous opening scene i was mesmerized. Cyclical time is the main subject of this movie (others are human seek for purpose, truth, religion) based on a Hungarian novel and i think that a basic key to try to grasp this movie's meaning is the art of intellectual creation trying to alter or transcend time and space (novel in a novel - movie in a movie). I'm going to watch "Damnation", as soon as I find the just position for Satantango in my top 10 movie list of all time, why not contesting my number 1, which is of course "Citizen Cane".
Den enfaldige mördaren (1982)
Masterpiece!
Dazzling performances by both a young and hardly recognizable Stellan Skarsgard, as a simple minded man and movie's director Hans Alfredson as the movie's villain. They both give Oscar winning performances. The storyline is very intriguing, cinematography is close to perfection, the musical score flawless, the supporting actors play excellently, the pace of the movie, starting with the hero's flashbacks and revealing the past slowly and gradually till its climax in just the ending 5 minutes of the film, is superb! An enlightening film and as i'm informed one of the best Swedish movies ever! A must see for every cinephile who is fed up with Hollywood junk!
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Hilarious slapstick comedy!!!
A good horror movie must give the viewers the creeps, but if the viewers can't stop laughing then there's something wrong! I'm completely shocked when i see such high ratings on a huge flop in terms of quality, plot, direction, acting, like this one. I mean just 1 point above "the shining" on IMDb? But i suppose that most of this movies voters haven't even heard about Kubrick's masterpiece. These high ratings and the "scream" award it won made me watch this movie and after all i don't regret it because it took me only a few minutes to realize that this movie must be watched as if it is a hilarious comedy. The "Lamia plot" was totally unconvincing, the caricature of a gypsy woman with all her phony grimaces, phony accent and phony teeth got me laughing to tears, the scene of the fight in Alysson Lohman's car was absolutely ridiculous, Lohman's breakdown in her job spitting blood all over her boss was beyond any serious critic, the scene of her visit to Justin Long's parents was surrealistically burlesque, and the comic climax was beyond any doubt her "slimy" meeting with Ms Ganosh body in both her house and her grave, let alone the speaking goat and the weird Russian Kalinka- style dance. I can't say which of the two Alysson Lohman or Justin Long is more bored in this film. It makes me sad that modern horror movies are so obvious and predictable, horror has to lurk in the darkness and make its presence gradually and it is its absence that intensifies the feeling of the viewers anxiety. 3 stars if being viewed as a slapstick comedy, 1 as a horror movie.
