Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Its not bad, but it's not great either.
Overall I did like the show. Some of the additions were very well done and were definite improvements.
But while it didn't really feel rushed, it was messy and overall felt a bit hollow.
They did very well with most of the actor choices look and voices. But too often they were completely missing those nuances that made them feel like the original characters, which made the animated show so good.
The show did look and sound amazing.
Maybe they tried to force feed too many things? Might have been the lack of taking time to let the characters be and live, on their trip half way around the world.
But, If / when I was to watch Avatar again, It'll be the original instead. Though I'll be watching season 2 of this new version when it comes out. The issues with season 1, shouldn't be hard for them to remedy in the second season.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Felt like it was unfinished
It was decent to start with & had a bunch of good points throughout it. But really felt like an unfinished movie that had a lot left out because of its inclusive rating.
Part way through it started to feel like it was pushed towards young teens who need fast pacing and lots going on, even if the story is left unfinished / characters aren't fleshed out.
Not often do I get to a point in a movie where I just don't really care about what's happening anymore.
Visuals & sound were very good though (watching with Atmos & Projector).
Checked again before reviewing today & found there is going to be a full cut of the movie as well. (director / snyder cut) that is higher rated. Hopefully it has the same quality improvements overall like Justice League did (but not the annoying 4:3 aspect ratio). As that was a massive improvement on the theater release (which was as bad as this movie).
Black Sails (2014)
One of, if not, the best show I've seen before.
Just finished the series, and throughout it I was just amazed at how well done it was. So many times, during big moments, normal but such well done conversations, and at the end of so many episodes, I just thought how damn good this show is.
It's a few years old now, so the only real negative is a bit of the fire / smoke CGI is a bit dated. But the ships, combat, seas, costumes, characters, sets extremely well written story & acting are just done so well.
Just had a quick look at some of the other reviews and they cover it very well. It's easily up there with The Wire, Breaking Bad, the good seasons of Game of Thrones even.
I was hesitant to start it, but so glad i did.
The Gray Man (2022)
Its an action movie, needs big screen + home theatre
Wasn't expecting too much from this really.
At first it seemed really choppy / so much happening with little back story. But as it went on it just seemed to flow well and ended up really enjoying it.
Though being this sort of action movie, watching it on a projector with Atmos really makes a difference. Woulda felt lackluster without it and seem most people don't have that sort of setup at home, i can see it affecting the reviews.
Over all was a really good movie. 8.5 seems right, but the extra .5 to make up for the review bombs.
Resident Evil: Parasite (2022)
Best so far
Wasn't really any stupid stuff like the other episodes. Via characters, monsters, 'hacking', stupid security things etc.
Just seemed like a well done episode.
Though the 'neo' wesker was pretty silly, his other clone was pretty funny.
The overall story seemed to progress quite a bit and was interesting.
Resident Evil (2022)
Its not all bad
It's definitely not a 1. All these kids need to stop rating stuff with 1's & 2's.
Some parts are really good, just finished season 1. It does get better later on.
But early on, its like they wanted you to hate the young jade. Seems to be they wanted her to be an annoying little B. I get some characters are like that, but putting it in the first episode, & making you hate one the main characters, makes you not want to watch anymore. (and the reviews prove this with the hate of the show / people giving up before 1 episode is over).
The monsters / zombies were pretty decent. (apart from one earlly on just staring for 5 seconds point blank at jade, while the others are getting insta killed)
A lot of the teen stuff drags on /isn't very interesting. There is also a lot of stupid stuff that happens, that really just shouldn't. Plus completely implausible stuff like the complete lack of security personnel at this multi million dollar lab. And a kid hacking his way into a multi billion companies building & other security systems.
The over all story was pretty good. But on the whole it's not a very good show.
The Wheel of Time: Origins (2021)
Thes actually had the feel of the books
Looks like most the reviews here are for the show itself. Not the origin stories.
These origin stories really capture the feeling of the books lore.
Enjoyed these a lot more than the show and if they had this sort of story telling + narration throughout the show, (and actually stuck to the main story) then it would have been a lot better.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
What Resident Evil actually is
I nearly passed on the movie from all the bad reviews. But had a look through and it really seems like it's getting review bombed for some reason.
Watched It late & in the dark. Really gave me the eerie feeling the games did.
It's much more of a horror movie & very different to the 'superhero' type Milla Jovovich ones.
Definitely worth watching & ignore all these 1-5 reviews, might be some haters, but pretty sure they are mostly fake.
The Wheel of Time: Leavetaking (2021)
First episode was just too rushed.
Just watched episode 4, and it's progressively getting better and better.
But episode one was really a massive let down, to the point of considering not watching the show at all.
Give a proper first episode / extended version or something to fix such a poor start.
Red Notice (2021)
Didnt expect much
After seeing the bad reviews I wasn't expecting much. But the movie was really good. Guessing all the sub 6 scores are fakes trying to dump on Netflix.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021)
Awesome movie, but not really the witcher
If you viewed this movie as it's own thing, it really is amazing.
It felt a bit rushed at times and could have been fleshed out more, but the sound, design, story, characters, visuals etc are all really well done.
But they've called it the witcher and haven't followed the witcher books or series well at all.
9/10 for its own thing.
5/10 for a witcher movie not following the witcher lore.
Luca (2021)
Buy pixar, for the name, make boring movies
These aren't pixar movies. They bought the brand and keep releasing worse and worse movies.
The older Pixar movies were so much better, really liked coco too.
But this is the first movie in a while that we had no interest in finishing. About.40 minutes it and it's just a giant advertisement for a scooter brand and was going nowhere.
2 stars cause it does look pretty good.
Hagane no renkinjutsushi (2017)
If you somehow liked this..
Watch the anime full metal alchemist brotherhood. There is a reason it has such a high rating. This movie was just terrible compared,
It's missing everything that really makes the original good.
